Cost of dog food!!

Clearly it's gone up with everything else, but Jesus Christ!! I always used to feed my dogs decent food, but I really can't afford to be spending £40+ for a 12kg sack given they get through that in two weeks. I used to feed Millies Wolfheart which was £29.99 for 12kgs. Now it's £44.99!! I've had to bite the bullet and put them on a cheap food. How are you managing pet food costs?

I used to always have two dogs , now it will just be the one . I can't afford to take the risk and have two that I suddenly can't feed 😢.

My vet told me that cheap dog food was a huge factor in health issues for dogs.

pretty unhealthy for a dog not getting fed...

AdoraBell · 06/04/2023 17:01

We’ve been using a working dog food from a pet food shop. We’re in Somerset. It’s gone up a bit but not as much as commercial brands. Also, we’re down to one dog as we had to say goodbye to our elderly pooches earlier this year.

cocksstrideintheevening · 06/04/2023 17:02

@KittytheHare where they trying to sell you their line or a product that they get commission on?

Ddog is diabetic and is now fed kn a mix of Chappie wet and kibble. Would have have dreamt of feeding him Chappie before. My vet recommended it over Hills and if you compare the ingredients you can see why.

EmmaGrundyForPM · 06/04/2023 17:02

My 10kg dog costs about £10 per week in food including treats. I don't think dog food has gone up any more than human food.

I buy good quality wet food but also feed him one or two meals a week that are rice, veg and protein. The rice and veg is leftovers from our meals and I'll mix in a tin of sardines in oil (40p) which he loves. He's also partial to scrambled egg, although eggs have shot up in price.

Nope. A very down to earth vet who said that in her opinion cheap dog food caused health issues. Not peddling anything

Newmumph · 06/04/2023 17:05

We also fed Millie’s wolf heart, we have four dogs so I used to buy 4 x 12kg bags, it’s gone up from 180 for 4 to about 215 in less than a year, now about £53 a bag instead of £43 so £10 in a year!! I have just changed them onto something cheaper but not cheap cheap, I just couldn’t justify spending that much when they eat 12kg in about 10 days

And your point is??

FlipFlops4Me · 06/04/2023 17:08

I've just swapped ours over to a cheaper (but it seems better to my eyes and nose) wet food to go with their very good small bite kibble. I have two Shih-Tzu and the small tins/kibble were together costing me £140 per month!! The new trays are half the price and are so much better! I've done a slow switchover but the dogs absolutely clamour for food these days, and get stuck in straightaway.

I couldn't believe the price difference! And truly, the meatiness of the new food is incredible.

EmmaGrundyForPM · 06/04/2023 17:10

@KittytheHare her point presumably is that its better to feed a dog cheap food than not feed it. In other words, sometimes people have no choice.

I've also heard that Chappie is recommended by some vets. I've not used it myself but don't think people should sneer at those who do

TheBitterBoy · 06/04/2023 17:12

My 16kg dog is raw fed, I'm spending £35 every three weeks, which has gone up by about a third in the last year for sure, but at just over a tenner a week for a high quality diet I'm okay with that. However we can afford it and if we couldn't I'd be trying to find a way to reduce the cost but try to keep a raw diet, as it's what she is used to and happily eats.

Yes I’m aware of the point she was trying to make. My comment was rhetorical.

Millies Wolfheart raised their prices without any notice which really annoyed me. Now feed ci really good dog food. Offers on bulk buys.

CC4712 · 06/04/2023 17:17

I used this site to 'help' me choose what to buy. I wouldn't take the £'s as indicative of what the product actually costs per day for your particular dog though. I was more interested in country of manufacture, how easy/hard it was for me to buy, protein/meat content etc.

I order gentle dog food kibble online which is cold pressed and tins of butchers. Neither is rated 99% by that website, but I feel they are better than some of the supermarket cheapy brands.

We feed Natures diet wet , I buy a months worth at a time from Zooplus and it’s about £40 per month for my 15 kg dog , I slightly underfeed as he has lots of treats , human scraps and is prone to fat . He also has about £20 of barking heads dental chews . It’s pretty good quality for the price .

GlassBunion · 06/04/2023 17:35

Strangely enough, the two different vet practices that we've used over many years both recommended Chappie for sensitive tummies and when they were poorly.

There's nothing wrong with it, it's just we all feel that the higher the price, the better the food. It's really not the case.

Retrain12345 · 06/04/2023 17:38

We’ve also had to buy cheaper food for ours, the one I was using had gone up £10 a bag and I use 3 per month!

I also used to use butchers as a topper but that’s also gone up to £22 instead of £15 which is a huge increase.

I've also heard of Vets recommending Chappie too , can't remember for what precisely .

Dog food has shot up in price however mine have the best no compromise because I think it's better for them .

CountryParsonPetal · 06/04/2023 18:06

My dogs are 30kg and 15kg. I worked out they are costing me over £500 per month to feed. That includes Butternut Box for their main dinners, sometimes fresh meat for variety, a bone most days for their chew time, dog walking and pub treats.

I'm going to have to cut back as DS is off to uni which will be expensive. DH likes the idea of feeding James Wellbeloved instead. I'll have to look into that and see if the nutrition to cost value of JWB is any good.

GuyFawkesDay · 06/04/2023 18:12

Yep, we fed Eden when ours was a puppy. Incredible food but £80+ a bag even though it lasted it got too much.

We ended up moving him onto CSJ dog foods instead. My family have working dogs who are all fed one or other of their foods and they all seem to do just fine on them. He gets a bit of chappie on sometimes, or some dog bone broth. Never a scrap left.

There's a big manufacturer called GA foods who do a lot of "white label" dog foods like Ci and various others. Our local pet shop has their things as own branded and their really very decent. With a loyalty card it worked out around £30 a 12.5kg sack.

I hear good things about Jollyes life stage food too.

WoofWoofBeachLife · 06/04/2023 18:15

Some of the most expensive foods are rubbish and not worth the money at all. Royal Canin being one. I've always fed Skinners or raw. Our male suddenly started to have this skin reaction, to cut a long story short it turned out to be the Skinners. They claim the recipe hasn't changed, maybe our dog has. Anyway, now we feed chappie dry after another breed owner said her dogs were doing great on it. They get other bits and pieces as well as coconut oil and apple cider vinegar and they look fantastic. Coats are fabulous and no allergies for the big boy. All the girls are great and coats are soft and no itching or food nibbling. 🐾🥰

GuyFawkesDay · 06/04/2023 18:17

@WoofWoofBeachLife how do you add the apple cider vinegar and coconut oil?

Ours has a grass allergy which is just kicking in this time of year and I'll try anything to help!

Sisisimone · 06/04/2023 18:49

I'm wondering whether to start making up the dogs food at home now. Think it will be cheaper and better for them. I've picked up a Lily's kitchen recipe book. I read this week that research has shown that a dog fed home cooked food lives on average 3 years longer than those fed commercial dog good, which seems a huge difference
