Cost of dog food!!

Supernova23 · 06/04/2023 16:50

Clearly it's gone up with everything else, but Jesus Christ!! I always used to feed my dogs decent food, but I really can't afford to be spending £40+ for a 12kg sack given they get through that in two weeks. I used to feed Millies Wolfheart which was £29.99 for 12kgs. Now it's £44.99!! I've had to bite the bullet and put them on a cheap food. How are you managing pet food costs?

Same here with one of the girls and grass. I just add it to their dinner or breakfast. A teaspoon of coconut oil, apparently its been said they don't get benefits digesting it but I've seen a remarkable difference. I just put a splash of the ACV in one of the meals. The grass is a nightmare, I also use Piriton, well the equivalent from the pharmacy. I used to just give one a day but our vet said they can have up to 4 a day, dependant on size though. Our male is 32kg and when he was really bad a few months ago he was getting 3 a day. Vets just seem to want to hand out steroids and I'd rather try to stay off them. One of the girls is on a steroid though, she's basically allergic to most things lol 😆
Sorry for the super long reply x

I have nine dogs. They used to be raw fed but, considering the cost of the food and the power for the freezers especially since the huge increases in power charges, we switched to dry. They all now have Harrington's and thrive on it. We buy direct in bulk and take advantage of their regular discount codes.

GuyFawkesDay · 06/04/2023 19:19

Thanks @WoofWoofBeachLife

Luckily my vet is pretty good, she's had him on piriton and trying herbal supplement and zincoseb shampoo as she doesn't want dogs on long term steroids if possible.

He could have cytopoint injections but will try the coconut oil and ACV as I have both in the house

We stick with Dr Johns. We know the local distributor and it’s good enough for his dogs. £80 every three months for 45kg.

Asdf12345 · 06/04/2023 19:23

45 kg does a 20kg and a 30kg dog three months I should have said.

Which Dr Johns do you use?

My vet told me that cheap dog food was a huge factor in health issues for dogs.

@KittytheHare What an insensitive comment.

My dog eats ASDA Hero. He loves it. The vet also said it doesn't matter what brand a dog eats as long it eats. He's a healthy weight too and doesn't seem any different since we swapped him to Hero.

Newpeep · 06/04/2023 20:43

In my experience the best food is the one that suits the dog AND owner.

Last dog ate all kinds of things from Chappie to home cooked. Raw to working dog meal, depending on her needs at the time. She lived until 17 and had a long and disgustingly healthy life.

shutthewindownow · 06/04/2023 20:45

Harrington's is a good food that doesn't cost the earth. Our dog has always been good on it.

eatdrinkandbemerry · 06/04/2023 21:00

My dogs food has gone up but still not too bad.
He enjoys sardines (which are brilliant for his dry skin) so has those with dry food twice a week and they are only 35p a tin

Asdf12345 · 06/04/2023 21:50

@IngGenius

The stuff in the big dark green bag. We tried a few and that was the one they seemed to like best. We were given about 50kg in different trial sized bags to try out.

I've just swapped ours over to a cheaper (but it seems better to my eyes and nose) wet food to go with their very good small bite kibble. I have two Shih-Tzu and the small tins/kibble were together costing me £140 per month!! The new trays are half the price and are so much better! I've done a slow switchover but the dogs absolutely clamour for food these days, and get stuck in straightaway.

I couldn't believe the price difference! And truly, the meatiness of the new food is incredible.

@FlipFlops4Me which food are they on now please? I have a friend with a fussy wee dog and she's looking for a new option

Sunflowers765 · 06/04/2023 22:50

My pup is on Orijen which is one of the top rated on all about dogfood but it's £90 for 11kg which lasts him about a month. We're just about to switch to raw which will cost about the same, but once he's grown up he'll have less. I'd like another dog but what with food vet insurance not sure we can afford it!!

CountryParsonPetal · 06/04/2023 18:06

My dogs are 30kg and 15kg. I worked out they are costing me over £500 per month to feed. That includes Butternut Box for their main dinners, sometimes fresh meat for variety, a bone most days for their chew time, dog walking and pub treats.

I'm going to have to cut back as DS is off to uni which will be expensive. DH likes the idea of feeding James Wellbeloved instead. I'll have to look into that and see if the nutrition to cost value of JWB is any good.

Fuck me, some families don't have £500 a month to feed themselves! Lucky dogs Shock

coffeecupsandwaxmelts · 06/04/2023 22:59

My beagle gets Harringtons.

We order off their website and subscribe to get a discount. He gets a mixture of wet and dry and it probably costs me around £1 a day to feed him.

He's in excellent condition and is always complimented at the vets - he's muscular, fit and healthy and the perfect weight for his breed.

SpanielEye · 06/04/2023 23:00

Our dogs have moved on to Chappie and they seem delighted about it. One of them was on the chubby side despite having recommended portions - Marcus Muhle before - but has lost some weight since changing food.

I like the idea of adding sardines though.

Deathbyfluffy · 06/04/2023 23:04

Prices have rocketed - even for my cat, and she’s only small!
My neighbour has two dogs and was telling me how their food is now unaffordable - as she’s sparking up a cigarette 😅

Girliefriendlikespuppies · 06/04/2023 23:21

I've just downloaded the zooplus app, food is a bit cheaper on there.

I think I might stop buying wet food for my dog and just buy kibble, he like Lifestage from Jollies and it suits his sensitive stomach.

GuyFawkesDay · 07/04/2023 08:41

Sardines are great. I am a stingebag and make a tin last 2 meals 🤣

WTF1974 · 07/04/2023 08:59

I went shopping yesterday evening in Morrisons and couldn't believe how much Chappie was on the shelf for. Scandalous prices 😳

Cost of dog food!!
WTF1974 · 07/04/2023 09:00

Pedigree not Chappie. Apologies

BelindaMelinda · 07/04/2023 09:11

I've always fed Skinners or raw. Our male suddenly started to have this skin reaction, to cut a long story short it turned out to be the Skinners. They claim the recipe hasn't changed, maybe our dog has.

Skinners has definitely changed. We used to feed Skinners years ago to our dogs and it was great - We put our springer spaniel pup on it last year and she had so many issues, itchy skin, constant loose poo etc.

We now use Ci - they've put their prices up by about a fiver so it's £49.99 for a 13kg sack, but it lasts us 5 or 6 weeks. She also had either an egg or half a tin of sardines/mackerel every day as a topper. All the issues she had on skinners were instantly resolved and she's in outstanding condition as confirmed by our vet.

KittytheHare · 06/04/2023 16:57

My vet told me that cheap dog food was a huge factor in health issues for dogs.

But cost doesn’t correlate to quality - so that doesn’t even make sense.

Some of the “premium” lines from big brands have the same rubbish ingredients as their cheap lines, just with a couple of extrras, different marketing and a huge price.

Faz469 · 07/04/2023 09:17

We buy eukanuba order it online from zooplus. Costs us £37 including delivery for 15kg and its a really good quality dog food. Takes 3-5 days to get here as usually come from Germany but its well worth it. Sometimes they offers on it on amazon too so I flit between the 2 companies. Amazon is a lot dearer at the moment tho.
