Would you rescue a French Bulldog?

We've been looking to rescue a dog and have been selected for a Frenchie.

From reading threads on here everyone is saying, don't ever get one.

This one is in good health, well trained and under 3 years old. He's only in rescue due to no fault of his own.
Would you rescue one?

No but if you’re into French bulldogs this is probably the least harmful way to get one.

MithrilCostsMore · 28/02/2023 16:56

I took in a rescue frenchie. I would never buy one. Just be prepared for bad skin, awful flatulance and breathing issues. Probably a shorter lifespan than other dogs. That said, we adore her and spend our lives making sure she's happy and settled after spending the first two years of her life in a puppy farm.

Floralnomad · 28/02/2023 16:57

Personally not , I wouldn’t get from a rescue any type of dog that I wouldn’t go out and buy from a breeder .

OutOfThisState · 28/02/2023 17:05

Yes, I’d take any dog if I could provide what they needed. They’ve been let down by humans, the breeders, the buyers so they deserve a good home if you’re a good match.

Roselilly36 · 28/02/2023 17:10

I would hesitate, as they have such a short lifespan. Good luck with any decision you make OP.

Kleptronic · 28/02/2023 17:14

Only if I had lots of money. Or gold-plated pet insurance. So lots of money.

Dartmoorcheffy · 28/02/2023 17:16

I would but then I want rescue any dog that needs it.

hattie43 · 28/02/2023 17:25

Absolutely. If you don't want her send her to me .

Lastqueenofscotland2 · 28/02/2023 18:02

I personally wouldn’t due to the likely extortionate vet bills but to each his own.

countrygirl99 · 28/02/2023 18:04

The insurance will be expensive. There's a reason why.

nodtik · 28/02/2023 18:07

No because the only Frenchies that I know are aggressive, greedy and bloody noisy breathers!

They are not easy dogs to train

SirSamVimesCityWatch · 28/02/2023 18:09

Nope. All the reasons that mean I wouldn't buy the breed still count.

coffeecupsandwaxmelts · 28/02/2023 18:20

No.

I just don't agree with them being bred and even the "healthy" ones seem to be walking vet bills. Insurance will be extortionate and you'll also need to pay very close attention in warm weather.

I've never met a Frenchie that doesn't snuffle and snort and struggle to breathe - most require surgery to maintain their airways too.

I also know a lot of dog walkers who won't walk them because they have too many breathing issues and they feel it's too risky - the same applies to pugs. It's such a shame as they're lovely natured but they're all just walking time bombs.

LivesOnPigeonStreet · 28/02/2023 18:36

I really don't like the way they look. Obviously you shouldn't choose a dog for its looks but there are so many lovely dogs I would never get a french bulldog. If you like Frenchies and can afford the vet bills then you should. It is not the same as ordering one from a breeder.

Surelyitscoffeetime · 28/02/2023 19:00

Yes I would.

Bettyboop3 · 28/02/2023 19:18

The only frenchie i know has a lovely nature, is very affectionate and great with children.

VerityUnreasonble · 28/02/2023 19:28

Family member has a rescue Frenchie. He's a bit of a twat. But very affectionate, good with people and much loved. He has cost a small fortune in vets bills, usually related to him eating inanimate objects.

3ormoredogs · 28/02/2023 19:59

No. The ones I know are grumpy and aggressive.
They also fart constantly and have loads of health issues.

Plus I can’t stand dogs without a tail and would never ever choose one! I know that’s incredibly shallow of me to have that as a reason though.

HelloChompy · 28/02/2023 20:12

I briefly walked a lovely natured young French Bulldog. I was only walking her until April and even then I had said to her owners if it gets much warmer than this I can only do garden visits for her. I believe she was around 2 and already had surgery for her breathing.

I guess look at it in the same way that some people adopt very elderly dogs? Offer them a good home to live out the rest of their days but at the same time accept that they may not be with you all that long, anything else is a bonus and they may cost you a small fortune while they are with you.

ponyinmud · 28/02/2023 21:47

I wouldn't because I need my dogs to flex with my life/lifestyle (eg go on walks etc) I'd feel you would have to always be taking a French bulldogs disabilities into account.

I would also feel judged by people like me who think French bulldogs have been bred for their looks and have to suffer their own lives with I'll health and discomfort.

(Apparently very often other dogs don't recognise that French bulldogs are dogs because they are so deformed).

I also couldn't stand the heavy breathing & snoring, it would drive me nuts! I didn't know about the farting, that would also send me over the edge!

HaveYouSeenNancy · 28/02/2023 21:57

Why do they fart so much? I wouldn't adopt one because the sound of them breathing would make me uncomfortably sorry for them, all day long. I have the impression they don't bark much though, so that's good (if I'm right about that).

Suzi888 · 28/02/2023 22:04

If the dog is a good fit for your family, then I would. They don’t need much exercise and are affectionate (usually). Can’t comment on the veterinary costs.

Because they're horrendously badly bred and often have digestive issues as a result.

Bad breeding also leads to lots of allergies and intolerances.

wetotter · 28/02/2023 22:11

I don't think I could take the vet bills

EdithStourton · 28/02/2023 23:53

I would in some circumstances, because I have known some very jolly ones. But I'd be prepared for vet bills.

Once a dog is in rescue, the whole issue of why it was bred becomes moot, other than how that might have any ongoing impact on its welfare.
