Would you rescue a French Bulldog?

We've been looking to rescue a dog and have been selected for a Frenchie.

From reading threads on here everyone is saying, don't ever get one.

This one is in good health, well trained and under 3 years old. He's only in rescue due to no fault of his own.
Would you rescue one?

Have you run a quote to check the cost of insuring the dog - and factored in that pre existing conditions won't be covered?

Frenchies have lots of health problems are are correspondingly expensive to insure.

Because they're horrendously badly bred and often have digestive issues as a result.

Bad breeding also leads to lots of allergies and intolerances.

Thank you. Poor little souls though, that's heartbreaking.

@HaveYouSeenNancy it really is sad 😞

Similarly there's a pug I often meet on my dog walks - he likes to play with my beagle. He's so sweet natured but his health is appalling and he looks (and acts) much older than he is as he just struggles with life.

It's such a shame as his personality and temperament are amazing but his health is so poor.

I would if he is in good health and no known issues. Doesn't mean there won't be in the future thought. He may cost you money further down the line but any dog could really. He needs a home and if your able to offer him what he needs then go for it. 😊 where are you rescuing him from?

I have a rescue frenchie cross and he is a delight.

Newpeep · 01/03/2023 12:47

No but that's because I like my dog to be capable of a full day of walking or adventuring when they mature, not to struggle to breathe walking across the room.

But it depends what you want in a dog. No right and wrong answer.

SameOldJunk · 01/03/2023 13:00

Yes, assuming we were both a good match (i.e. the individual dog had the temperament I was after and my home would suit him/her). It's unlikely though as I always want a dog that would enjoy 2+ hours exercise a day.

Get an insurance quote first.

And ask the insurer for quotes for the same dog, but 2, 3 and 4 years older. Insurance is high for these breeds, and rises rapidly with age.

Frenchie insurance starts at around £60 a month for a puppy…and can go upward to &200 a month as they get older.

ScattyHattie · 01/03/2023 21:55

They don't appeal to me lookswise but i suspect high insurance cost would make the decision for me and they need really good lifetime coverage as prone to lots of health issues. Also depends on your lifestyle whether there needs are easier to blend in.

One of the vet reception dogs is a sweet Frenchie that was surrendered and friendly cuddly dog, they can be a little stubborn but many find that characterful. It's not extreme nosed type but does have separation anxiety so guess leaving home while go out in warmer weather is also tricky. My dog walker also had one keel over during a gentle spring stroll but I'm sure some are worse state for breathing than others and certainly many porky frenchies about.

Bloody hell and I thought my lab’s, gold-plated, PetPlan Covered for Life was expensive!

ProbablyDogNappersHunX · 02/03/2023 09:34

A few years ago I ran a quote for my dog and a quote for a French bulldog with otherwise identical details - same age, same London postcode etc.

Quote for my dog was £50. Quote for a Frenchie was £250. Per month.

countrygirl99 · 02/03/2023 09:52

My son used to work for a pet insurance company. It was 9 years ago but even then quotes for Frenchies regularly came in over £100 a month.

Untitledsquatboulder · 02/03/2023 15:42

Friends of ours did. A sweet dog but had chronic diarrhoea, cost a fortune in vets bills and died a few months later. They said never again and these are people who have beagles so they are used to high demand dogs.

Imo there is no such thing as a Frenchie in good health.

just one that has yet to be diagnosed.
