Merles

Please to those people who pay mega bucks for their new merle puppy whether it be a bulldog or a dachshund or any of the popular breeds - be aware that your dog is a mongrel and not a pedigree. This is because at some point in the history there will have been crossbreeding of some sort and a merle is not always a healthy dog. Merles cannot and should not be bred with another merles as this can lead to health problems

21 is an absolutely amazing age @Bideshi Wink

Yeah - they were 2 amazing little dogs - feisty and with a marked sense of humour. Brothers but not litter brothers (same sire and dam). I've never had another dachs since though I would I found the right one. Now they're fashionable you see some shockers: bow legs, underhung jaws, dipped spines - all that for £1,000 upwards. Incidentally, the long-hair gene was introduced by being back-bred with spaniels, I understand. No quarrel with that (my indignation about such things is inconsistent and selective!)

Yes, I used to look after "merle" show cocker - he had a lot of behavioural issues from a young age, sadly. Obviously I can't say for sure that that's a result of his breeding but I suspect it plays a pretty big part in it.

I would say 90% poor breeding + 10% poor handling skills from the owner.

Interesting thread. Thanks for starting it. I think everyone is kind of agreeing with each other tbh.
breeding practices can be shit and disreputable people will breed/dell whatever is popular.
if people can’t comprehend that flat faced dogs might have health problems then the merle problem is probably irrelevant.
what I mean is if you’re the kind of person that has the ££ and wants a Frenchie then the fact it’s merle won’t be off putting. Probably makes it more attractive tbh.

You are welcome. If any part of this thread has helped anyone and or stopped them from making bad decision I am pleased.

For sale on pets for homes.

Merle "cocker spaniels" which are clearly dachshund crosses, looking at those features.

Apparently stud dogs "paperwork" is available 🤔People are getting scammed for mongrel puppies, and the actual breed is potentially at risk of genetic issues.

Indeed. I live very near to someone who has been pumping out litter after litter of French Bulldogs for a few years now. They’ve now started breeding from two Merle French Bulldogs, as if the breed didn’t have enough health problems to start with. They clearly don’t give a monkeys though and they have bought themselves a brand new Range Rover, so all good in their world I guess. I can’t decide who is more odious, them or the people who buy from them.

ChangedmynameagainforChristmas · 28/02/2023 13:12

The people who buy from them think they are buying something special so hopefully threads like this stop them from supporting those shysters

Might be worth reporting them to your local council/trading standards. If they’re producing more than 3 litters per year they need a licence.
Or inland revenue - income from puppy sales is taxable.

Unlikely. If someone wants a Merle-coloured dog the idea of slightly mixed genetics is unlikely to put them off. And if they’re interested in breeds like dachshunds they can easily get purebred merles
