Dog owner leaving their dog poo in our garden

Ivalueloyaltyaboveallelse · 13/02/2023 17:16

How can I prevent an irresponsible owner allowing their dog to poo on our front lawn when they refuse to pick it up? It’s been happening for a while however we caught the owner (a neighbour a few doors up) in the act yesterday. Partner asked the owner if he could please pick up his dogs waste but he refused and walked away. Partner went out and had to do it however DH left it bagged up on their doorstep after asking them to please in future pick up their dog waste (not the best idea I know) DH was met with abuse from the man and his awful wife and they threw the bags back onto our property. DH had to walk away as was getting irritated. I have reported them to the local council, however it’s clear they really don’t care so how can I deter the dog from coming into our property? I wouldn’t normally be bothered if they picked it up. I understand that dogs need to go and that I do have the biggest lawned front garden in our road. However if the owner isn’t going to clean it up I need to make my lawn uninviting to the dog. Any ideas? I’d be very grateful. I have charged up my ring door bell again but would a ultrasonic deterrent be any good?

Put a fence in (costly)?
Plant pots with spikey plants?

Keep taking any bags back to the owner. Every single time. Don’t be intimidated by them. Utter arseholes.

N1Co · 13/02/2023 17:25

Don’t bag it up. Use a bag to transport it back to their garden; but shake it into their garden out of the bag.

OntarioBagnet · 13/02/2023 17:26

Ring doorbell, hand over the footage to the council and he will get a £500 fine.

Yes, off a shovel on to their own garden/path/front doorstep ... and just hope they don't keep doing it long enough for you to progress to throwing it at their windows, disgusting idiots.

CupidCantAimStraight · 13/02/2023 17:28

Your neighbours are twats.

Ultrasonic deterrents are highly ineffective - my dog had one switched on near him once and (despite routinely being a nervous wreck) was completely unphased. They are also audible to cats, children and other animals, so quite indiscriminate. Even if they did work on dogs, the neighbour is choosing the route the dog takes, not the dog.

Presumably your front lawn is totally unfenced? Some minor barrier (fence, hedge etc.) that makes walking onto your front lawn a detour and somewhat inconvenient would act as a deterrent, so long as you don't get into a situation where there's a full on dispute and they'll do it just to spite you.

Ring doorbell, name and shame on neighbourhood facebook groups / NextDoor though.

Thanks, some good advice here. Ring door bell will definitely be charged regularly from now on and I will look into getting some spikey plants.

Stick some small cocktail sticks randomly in the lawn in the area the dog comes in from. A sharp shock a few times might work wonders.

Ivalueloyaltyaboveallelse · 13/02/2023 17:33

Front lawn is fenced but no gate so I will look into finding a gate that matches the iron fence. We didn’t put the fence in it was already here when we brought the property.

That's vile, it's hardly the dogs fault.

It's not the dog's fault it's got nasty in civilized owners.

ErrolTheDragon · 13/02/2023 17:36

Uncivilized.

watchfulwishes · 13/02/2023 17:38

Just get a gate.

Also report them to the council.

caramac04 · 13/02/2023 17:51

What utterly vile neighbours! Absolutely disgusting. I wouldn’t let my dogs poo on someone else’s lawn, that is their private property and I always clear up.
Your neighbours sound batshit. Or dogshit.

AmandaHoldensLips · 13/02/2023 17:53

Post it through their letterbox. No bag, obviously.

Ivalueloyaltyaboveallelse · 13/02/2023 17:56

They definitely are. I’m shocked it was anybody in our road. I just assumed it was other dog walkers on their way to a nearby field.

Automatic sprinklers with some dye in the system.

drpet49 · 13/02/2023 17:57

Council won’t get involved as it is private property. Camera footage and then post it on top ur local community groups. Shame them every single time.

Ivalueloyaltyaboveallelse · 13/02/2023 17:57

@AmandaHoldensLips haha tempting especially with all the abuse DH received yesterday.

Loving the sprinkler idea however I don’t want to get the dog just the owners.

Water pistol?

The dog probably won't care if it gets wet, it'll care less than the owner anyway! I would also name and shame on local next door/Facebook group and return their poop (unbagged) each time. If they bring it back to you just return it again later

Hellohah · 13/02/2023 18:05

I agree with this.
Cheeky bastards throwing it back.
I'd have knocked on and rubbed it in their face to be honest. So posting through the letterbox is restrained.

Theunamedcat · 13/02/2023 18:07

Cayenne pepper? I know people reccomend it for cats

Gate definitely with a bell so when he opens it the bell dings might deter him if people are looking

Theunamedcat · 13/02/2023 18:08

When returning the poop make sure you smear it so they can't collect it and return it to you

NoMumLeftBehindLiz · 13/02/2023 18:22

I’ve tried the sonic repeller, it works well on cats but mixed results on the dog setting. My neighbour has pegged a kind of intricate string spiderweb into her lawn and says it worked for her.
