Having my tiny girl spayed tomorrow. Changing my mind.

As the title says, I'm (and DH) really starting to fret about having my 18 month old girl spayed. She's so tiny (4lb) and extremely nervous. Just leaving her with the vet will be hugely traumatic for her and she will be terrified and aggressive.

The reason for having her spayed is because when she's in season our neutered male (same chihuahua/mini pincher x) manages to tie with her, and she hates it (although she lets him). I just don't want that happening again.

But I'm so scared something will go wrong, or she will be mentally scared forever.

Any words of wisdom would be greatly appreciated. It's just not practical to try and keep them apart as they shout the place down for hours, I've tried it.

Is he actually castrated? She’s more likely to be scarred by you not keeping them apart.

StormSeason · 23/01/2023 17:02

She will be fine,I promise.
She'll be "very busy" watching everything going around her, asleep and then you'll be picking her up and snuggling her the rest of the day. And it will be so worth it!
You will be much more stressed than she is,but remember it's what's best for your sweet girl.Good luck to you both.
*And remember they do this everyday and work on all sizes of dogs😊

CleopatrasBeautifulNose · 23/01/2023 17:05

She'll be sedated for the most part so I don't think mentally scarred.
The she will be protected from various medical problems by the spaying.
Be brave, she'll be OK.

Emmamoo89 · 23/01/2023 17:06

She'll be fine x

TizzWoz · 23/01/2023 17:10

It's the right thing to do.

Pinkmagic1 · 23/01/2023 17:12

It is worth it to avoid pyometra. I work for a veterinary charity and the demographic we deal with often don't nuetuer, so we see a lot of this. It is a horrible infection and results in an emergency spay. Not all survive if it is left too long Unfortunately.
The vets and nurses will be used to dealing with dogs of all sizes and temperaments. She will be well taken care of and like a pp said, you will be far more stressed than her.

ShouldIknowthisalready · 23/01/2023 17:16

Loads and loads of health benefits to the bitch being spayed (bit different for dogs and castration) Also imagine the stress your bitch has during her season for 3 weeks. A little bit of stress tomorrow will be way better than that.

She will get the lovely drugs from the vet will be very relaxed and then be home with you in no time.

karmalama · 23/01/2023 17:18

Ask your vet if you can be with her till they premed, they might let you if it's convenient , they have space etc
It's one day, a tiny bit of trauma and then all sorted
They will look after her.

OllytheCollie · 23/01/2023 17:23

She will be fine. She will be anxious when you leave her, then asleep, them recovering. I have had two girls spayed now and both recovered far faster than I expected - probably the worst part was not allowing them walks whilst they healed. It's a really safe procedure with lots of benefits for her.

BeansOnToast32 · 23/01/2023 17:24

You're doing the right thing! I've seen a bitch suffering with Pyometra and it's horrific, I will never not spay. I'm currently waiting for my pups first season and I will get her done 3months later as she's a small breed.

IheardYouButDontWantToAnswer · 23/01/2023 17:26

Your vet is obviously very experienced and will know how much anesthetic to give your tiny dog. She will be fine - smaller animals than that are speyed. Don't run the risk of your VERY TINY girl becoming pregnant

halfsiesonapotnoodle · 23/01/2023 18:08

She'll very soon, after you leave her, be given a premed before the anaesthetic and be extremely drowsy and not at all fretting. She really won't be aware of much. Try not to worry!

VanillaSnap · 23/01/2023 19:00

Your girl?

whataboutsecondbreakfast · 23/01/2023 19:43

She needs to be spayed - it could save her life one day.

Please don't let your anxiety stop you doing the right thing for your lovely girl.

unique78 · 23/01/2023 21:13

Thanks so much everyone, I feel reassured and a bit calmer. She's just such a bag of nerves (has been since we had her at 8 weeks), and can be aggressive when fearful (never with us, she adores us). When people come to the house she hides under the settee, and is scared stiff of other dogs (apart from our other two).

In the main though, she's happy, quirky and full of energy and personality. Loves her walks. She's like a very miniature Jack Russell, she's a lot smaller than we expected her to be, I worry that she was the runt and will have health issues.

Anyway, I'm waffling! To answer Wolfiefan, yes, our male is actually castrated and still manages to mate/tie. He's only interested when she's in season, he doesn't try any other time.

I'm going to take her tomorrow definitely. Thanks again everyone, for talking sense into me, I was really winding myself up.

@unique78

How did you/she get on today?
Hope all went well, and she’s doing ok.
My dog was spayed in December. She recovered very quickly and all back to normal now and I’m so glad it’s over and done with!

unique78 · 24/01/2023 22:07

@NowNumber5

The op went well (also had her nails clipped, which is impossible without sedation). Reading between the lines she was very anxious, they struggled with the canula, but everything else was unproblematic.

I'm glad it's over! She's feeling super sorry for herself, but she ate a small bit of chicken. I'm glad she's home, and she's getting lots of tlc.

Thank you for asking after her 😊

Pic was taken when she got home.

Aaah look at her little face, what a cutie!
Glad to hear it went well overall, and she’s back home now and having cuddles.
You've done the best thing for her.

Alexandernevermind · 24/01/2023 22:53

Cute little girl. You did the right thing and did it at the right time. Some people spay too soon and don't let their hormones settle and joints mature.

Whiskeypowers · 24/01/2023 22:55

She’s very cute
glad all went well

DecommissionedVag · 24/01/2023 22:58

I'm glad you got her sorted and it went well. She's very sweet!

unique78 · 25/01/2023 09:07

Thanks everyone 😊

Did she sleep well? Eating OK too? She's adorable!

DforDogWoof · 25/01/2023 10:54

Please go ahead and spay her. The benefits for the girls short and long term are huge.
