A dog is for life, not just Christmas

Just seen on my local FB page someone asking for puppy pads as she picked up the family's new puppy last night and forgot to get any.

So, this poor puppy is going to find itself in a strange place, without its mum or siblings, on the most manic. busy day of the year when no one can give it the time and attention it needs.

And presumably the breeder doesn't give a fuck because they've allowed this to happen.

I really feel like messaging the poster to tell them what I think of them but obviously I won't. So I'm venting here instead!

Just for not having puppy pads, what did people do when their was no such thing, calm down.

janeeyreair · 25/12/2022 09:02

Not everyone has a large family, or they could be having a quiet Christmas with older teenagers etc. It could be a long awaited puppy and they could only collect now, sorry just playing devils advocate. But you just don't know all the details.

SpentDandelion · 25/12/2022 09:03

Breeders are just in it for the money, look on Pets 4 us, gumtree etc and see how much they are charging for puppies and kittens, alongside the hundreds of adverts for older puppies and kittens that now need rehoming once novelty has worn off.
We are in the thick of a cost of living crisis, it's so irresponsible because the pets will be first to go.

No of course not, you've missed the point.

I have a Christmas which is as quiet as it is everyday so don't assume it will be busy. I also got my puppy about 4 weeks before Christmas and he is still here 6 years later.

People that will be irresponsible with puppies will be any time of the year so I don't yet all this angst about it being Christmas.

I would only judge if 6 months later they got rid of the puppy. It's a bit like the lockdown puppies. I know lots that got them in lockdown and they are still being well cared for despite all the anger about how they would be abandoned on here.

ButterBastardBeans · 25/12/2022 09:53

Try working at the vet in the run up to Christmas. The 'pre Christmas clear out' of euthanasing pets because the owners want them gone before the big day or before they go abroad for Xmas - whatever. It's a real and actual thing and it's heart breaking to deal with.

That's horrible. Do the vets agree to euthanise healthy animals?Sad

Wolfiefan · 25/12/2022 10:02

Oh Butter that is fucking heartbreaking.
Our youngest dog was old enough to be collected in time for Christmas as a pup. We discussed it with the breeder and picked her up afterwards. Just so all was calm and hazard free.
I found out yesterday that one of my older hound’s siblings had to be PTS due to cancer. I’m desperately desperately hoping for more christmases with her.

PlaitBilledDuckyPuss · 25/12/2022 10:06

We picked our pup up in the first week of January. We don't have children and our Christmas is a low-key affair, but the breeder had a blanket policy of not homing over Christmas, which we completely respected.

We had 14 happy years with him and he is still missed every single day.

These wankers who euthanise their pets because they're in the way deserve - well, I won't say what they deserve because the post would probably be deleted.

To add, our pup was not a 'Christmas present' - we had been on the waiting list for 18 months and there just happened to be a litter in October.

I hate how people jump to conclusions.

Yes, they could be shit owners who bought a farmed puppy but that's not necessarily the case.

Why assume the worst just because they're asking for puppy pads?

Luckyducker · 25/12/2022 11:00

I really want another dog for myself, my family and for my existing dog. I am capable of looking after a dog and would have been delighted to have welcomed one into our home today or any other day. Not every house is chaos on Christmas day. You are not the only one who knows how to look after dogs.

Oh @ButterBastardBeans - are people putting down healthy pets or pets that are unwell and they just don’t want them to die over Christmas?

Mostly older but still with plenty left in them. Just CBA with <insert excuse>

It's nothing to do with puppy pads! I was just trying to explain how I knew this woman had got a puppy on Christmas Eve.

Yes, you're right, I am drawing conclusions about people collecting puppies on Christmas Eve. They may not even celebrate Christmas. But the breeder deliberate bred the litter to be born in October and happy to hand over on Christmas Eve, and so the whole set up sounds dodgy.

thelobsterquadrille · 25/12/2022 13:04

But you can only breed when the bitch is in season, which could only be once or twice a year - so breeders don't necessarily have a choice as to when they breed 🤷🏻‍♀️

asblindasabat · 25/12/2022 13:13

Surely it can’t be legal to euthanise perfectly healthy pets???!? I feel like I should be writing to my MP to get this written into law if it’s not already! That’s a bloody disgrace!

BiteyShark · 25/12/2022 14:33

I have heard the same from a vet so I don't doubt it is true. And yes it's awful to think that people clear out the old for the new.

BUT having had my dog I also don't assume it is black and white. I have done many an OOO trip including Xmas and new year and it is traumatic for my dog. I have picked him up after operations and have heard him crying in the back (confirmed as to be him) so the vets is stressful and he has emotional issues from that. My OOO wouldn't let you in with them long after everyone else had opened up after covid. If he faced a life limiting condition that might deteriorate over a long holiday period I would take the decision to PTS early but in a relaxed planned environment rather than risk that. I guess that might put me in the same category as others would see him as having life left in him.

I did my school work experience in a Vet surgery as I was keen to be work in a vets. Once a week they went to the rspca to put down unwanted dogs, that was upsetting enough but when I asked why they sprayed them with paint I just couldn’t handle it, I’m not an emotional person but I had to leave I got so upset.

I also hated them cutting the tails off puppies.

I knew after that I couldn’t ever work in a vets.

I don’t like all the jumping to conclusions with people who get pets for Christmas. As others have said not everyone has big crazy Christmas’s and if someone’s going to neglect a pet they will do it at what ever times of the year. We got a pup 5 months ago and every day has been crazy for her with 3 loud screaming kids, but she also came from a loud crazy home with multiple dogs and kids, so it was nothing new for her, she thrives from it and lines when the kids are at school.

tedgran · 25/12/2022 15:19

My DH was a vet and did not put healthy animals to sleep.

asblindasabat · 25/12/2022 17:26

it should be illegal. I’m actually appalled and disgusted

LimeCheesecake · 25/12/2022 17:31

The only possibly justification for putting a healthy dog down is they are a danger to people. Sadly I think there’ll be more of that.

Ekerty72 · 25/12/2022 17:35

@ITSSSSCHRISTMASSS why would they spray them with paint?
