What impact will only being walked every other day have?

goldenpup · 20/12/2022 22:02

Medium to large breed of dog that can only be walked every other day for 45m to an hour - would this be ok? If not what kind of impact could that have on the dog?

It would have free reign inside and into the garden throughout the day and would receive playtime of dog toys and ball etc inside sporadically through the day.

Someone would be home most of the time but not able to walk more, so not left alone much but not exercising as much as should.

Thoughts on whether or not to take dog on in this circumstance?

Absolutely not. It would be very selfish to get a dog under those circumstances.

KiwiMum2023 · 20/12/2022 22:04

I’d let the dog go to someone who can provide the life it deserves.

AdventFridgeOfShame · 20/12/2022 22:05

Don't take on a dog in these circumstances.

You and the dog will get frustrated and start exhibiting bad behaviours.

MeJane · 20/12/2022 22:05

That wouldn't work at all for our dog. We have a dog walker for the days we can't walk her.

CloseYourEyesAndSee · 20/12/2022 22:05

No way. You mustn't take a dog if you can't walk them daily.

ToBeOrNotToBee · 20/12/2022 22:06

A retired greyhound would do quire well.

StarDolphins · 20/12/2022 22:06

Is it a rescue dog? why can’t it be walked everyday? what sort of dog & how old?

ElephantInTheKitchen · 20/12/2022 22:06

How old is the dog?
What breed? Some are more active than others.
Do you have a pre existing relationship with this dog (e.g. belongs to a relative that's going into a care home) or is it coming from a rescue centre?
What's the plan for the dog if it doesn't come to you?
Could you get a dog walker in every other day?

Hopeyoursproutsarealreadyon · 20/12/2022 22:07

Breed and age depending
. My husky no way. Our Lurchers would most definitely be happy. They crave company over walks.

Onnabugeisha · 20/12/2022 22:07

Sorry, but no. If you can’t walk the dog twice a day, you need to hire a dog walker or join a cooperative (where a group of dog neighbourhood owners walk each other’s dogs on a rota).

Baconand · 20/12/2022 22:08

As a temporary measure fine, when I was single and had surgery and there was about 2 months where walking was limited to when someone else could do it. But as a regular thing, absolutely not.

Suzi888 · 20/12/2022 22:08

Would a dog walker be a possibility?

MadameDe · 20/12/2022 22:08

Definitely not. Dogs need physical and mental stimulation. The same 4 corners of the house will drive him insane and you'll end up with your house chewed to shreds and he'll get anxiety around other dogs if he's not out enough.

I have a medium dog and we're outside for a minimum of 90 mins every day plus an hour of indoor play and he has use of the garden.

mum11970 · 20/12/2022 22:08

Totally depends on the dog

gogohmm · 20/12/2022 22:09

Squeeze two shorter walks in - ddog has 15 minutes before work, 20-30 mins after work then 15 mins before bed - older dog

autienotnaughty · 20/12/2022 22:09

I have a medium to large breed dog and he has 2 walks a day averaging around 45 min each. He really needs the exercise and stimulation

consuelabananahammockthethird · 20/12/2022 22:09

What’s the breed and reason for limited walking?
but mental stimulation three dogs more then physical exercise
I have a ‘high energy breed’ and it’s not walked every day more like 5/7 days and it’s a happy loved dog that spends his days asleep and content

consuelabananahammockthethird · 20/12/2022 22:09

Three = tires

Figgygal · 20/12/2022 22:09

No that's not going to be fair for most dogs

bowchicawowwow · 20/12/2022 22:10

I suspect there are a lot of big dogs who live like that, however it's far from ideal and I wouldn't get a dog knowing that's all I could offer it.

Dogs need an outlet, if they don't get it through exercise and brain stimulation they will behave badly at home. If mine misses a walk due to an emergency he will wake us up during the night, he's unsettled and starts finding forbidden things to entertain himself with.

toastfiend · 20/12/2022 22:11

Totally depends on the dog. My GSP would destroy your world with that little exercise, my GWP (who is admittedly not typical of his breed) would be perfectly happy. It's not ideal ideal, though - is a dog walker a possibility for at least a few of the off days?

goldenpup · 20/12/2022 22:12

Golden retriever cross about 18m old - being offered locally.

Think it's clear this would not work and would be much better placed elsewhere.

Couldn't afford a dog Walker.

Goawayangryman · 20/12/2022 22:13

What breed? Some big dogs would be fine and others a destructive pain.

VivaVivaa · 20/12/2022 22:13

Our neighbours elderly Greyhound would be fine with this. I can’t think of many other dogs this would work for though.
