I'm totally freaking out. DH gone to emergency vets. He's a spaniel/ Jack Russel cross. Pretty small. Reckon there was circa 30 raisins in it.... Sad

The vet will give him something to make him throw up. You dealt with it quickly. He’s being looked after and he’ll be ok.

Is he your first puppy? The counting the raisins in another mince pie is exactly how I was with my first dog - I remember panic-googling foods he’d stolen to check if they were dog safe.

He ate roughly 30 (I counted how many were in another one we had left) vet counted 29 on first induced puke so good they are mostly coming out

You are doing the right thing - getting him to the vet, working out how much he ate so it can be counted against what was got out of the dog. Well done spotting it early and getting it sorted. Good luck for a full recovery!

The bad stories I know of is where the dog ate raisins/chocolate and the owner only found out after the dog started to show symptoms.

gogohmm · 04/12/2022 19:17

Try not to worry, ddog has eaten many a mince pie, never knew it was a problem until I read it was on the banned list. Also eats chocolate, onions and other "bad" foods but is 21kg which makes a difference the vet told me (after he woofed down a whole box of Thornton's) years ago dogs ate everything so older people still give these foods to dogs

Took so long to type my comment, I realise it has been usurped by the 22.5 mince pies and more importantly some obviously much more sensible comments than mine.

Onions are also a problem for dogs apparently.

My Lab ate /pinched curry once. Lots of onion, he panted a lot we wondered why….. then discovered he had counter surfed and stole the curry.

No he's my 5th rescue dog. 😂 ironically the rescue centre called us specifically to offer him to us for adoption because we are 'experienced and responsible'. Epic fail.

He's on his way home. Most expensive mince pie ever. 😂😂😂 seems fine. Puked up all the raisins and has been prescribed charcoal. Still happy and waggling about apparently.

You can never keep them 100% safe. I have one now with no sense of danger and a lot of curiosity. If you light a flame on the front rings of the gas hob she tries to lick it.

whowhatwerewhy · 04/12/2022 19:30

Glad he's ok . From experience the charcoal is very messy . Mine was a very expensive malt loaf .

joliefolle · 04/12/2022 19:31

Aw, they're such pests! So glad he's on his way home with a wagging tail. Treat yourself to a mince pie and a glass of something nice.

FlorettaB · 04/12/2022 19:31

Excellent news!

smilingthroughgrittedteeth · 04/12/2022 19:32

My old dog once ate a whole chocolate orange that she stole from the side and unwrapped. I completely freaked out, the vet said it happens all the time and she was given some meds to make her sick. She lived for 10yrs after that.

Frightenedbunny · 04/12/2022 19:35

Happened to us last year. We put a present under our tree. Dog had never bothered with anything under the tree before. I returned from the school run to find the wrapping paper everywhere and 6 minced pies gone. They were deluxe ones, cost me around £200!!! They made him sick and he had a date with the veterinary nurse! We joke they were certainly deluxe ones!!

rickandmorts · 04/12/2022 19:35

They are menaces aren't they, glad he's on his way home. If it makes you feel any better, my little dog broke into the spare room, jumped on to the windowsill, unwrapped and ate a giant Easter egg filled with dark chocolate ganache. She had to stay in the vets for a 24 hours on a drip then have blood tests to check her kidney function as she'd had so much cocoa 😩 she's relentless when it comes to sniffing food out and stealing it!

LimeBasiandlMandarin · 04/12/2022 19:36

Thank you for all the reassurance. I love him dearly but despite being a responsible owner of 3 dogs (and 2 previously who died of old age) I feel like I am always winging it with this scamp.

It's the fact he's a Jack Russell cross, they're insanely intelligent and sent to test you. Mine is 12 and still regularly outsmarts me 🙈 she'll clock food and wait until my back is turned to get it. I caught her trotting off upstairs with a jar of bisto in her mouth last week 😂

PinotPony · 04/12/2022 20:03

Glad to hear he's ok.

Most dogs will be fine ingesting a few raisins, grapes or chocolate but there's a small chance of a bad reaction. If you go to the vet, they kind of have to do something in case your dog is the small percentage that reacts badly. So they'll nearly always give them meds to vomit it all up.

Why can people not even be bothered to read the OP 🤦‍♀️

I hope he's ok!

Absolutely agree it boils my piss...

1Sky · 04/12/2022 20:06

Spaniels are prolific food stealers

Ours waits deliberately till we are not looking

Luckily they are also greedy so often don't chew which makes it easier bringing it back up

Good luck with him!

Same here. Our old Staffie used to love a mince pie at Christmas and lived to be 16.

JesusInTheCabbageVan · 04/12/2022 20:11

Glad he's ok. Just be glad it wasn't on Christmas eve...

Don't envy the vet, having to count the raisins. Glad he's ok!

PlaitBilledDuckyPuss · 04/12/2022 20:19

Be careful on bonfire night, too. Dog + Parkin = lakes of diarrhoea.

PugInTheHouse · 04/12/2022 20:44

I have been to the vets twice in the last month with my 2 pups, 9 month old 40kg pup ate a tiny amount of wedding cake but vet said to go in ASAP as even a tiny number of raisins could be awful for him even though he's huge, I thought he'd eaten a couple, he was sick 3 raisins!. They gave us liquid charcoal and I now have stained carpets as trying to give him 80ml at a time was disastrous. This was half hour after vets shut so an £800 OOH bill for us! He came waltzing out looking proud of himself and laid on his back fro tummy rubs from the receptionists!

2 yo pug ate a fair amount of dark chocolate Toblerone, he was sick lots bless him. Luckily he did it 20 mins before the vets opened so I whizzed him round there for when the doors opened. He was very sleepy after and walked like he'd had 10 vodkas bless him. As soon as he was less sleepy he kept trying to get back into where he found the offending Toblerone 🙄

GettingItOutThere · 04/12/2022 20:44

hope your dogs ok!!

one of our dogs once at playdough and shit out a rainbow. Same dog has also eaten chocolate, onions and grapes (unintentional im not that daft)! still alive, perfect bloods and very old

ImOutOfTouch · 04/12/2022 20:47

Oh bless him. Glad he's ok.

My adult Lab ate twenty celebrations once and left all the bountys. Most expensive box of chocolates I've ever bought.
