Best place to buy a family fully trained dog?

Hi, can anyone recommend where we can buy a fully trained family dog from in the South uk? Ideally a year plus, rescue centres don't really have any suitable for a busy household with young kids. Seen a couple of sites but hard to know who you're buying from! We also need to consider the breed as one of our children have eczema, controlled asthma so would like to find someone who knows all about the breeds suitable etc. Thanks

You can also purchase your own pup and send it off for residential training- again mega bucks!

I don’t know why you are getting so many posts from people who haven’t got a clue! 😂I thought you have posted in aibu!

tryandtryagain · 20/11/2022 15:25

Why do you want a dog? what exactly do you want it trained to do?
The post sounds like you are buying and winter coat or a new rug.
Dogs massively change (and enhance) your life , if you are not ready for inconvenience you are certainly not ready for a dog.

Pythonese · 20/11/2022 15:26

There's a market opening, fully trained dogs. Be expensive though.

I expressed it badly - for a family that is full on busy with young children and no time to train a dog, and rescues have turned them down, and one child has allergies etc - that tells you something - they’re not ready for such a mythical perfect dog -it doesn’t exist. I actually thought it must be a joke post.

Exactly this! This is not a well thought through idea.

I’ve had dogs for 25 years. There are many red flags in the OP. Amazed you can’t spot them if you’re such an expert and think the rest of us are clueless.

I looked into WKD trained dogs before getting my assistance dog several years ago. They were £5k at the time though.

tabulahrasa · 20/11/2022 15:46

Pet dogs aren’t ever really fully trained, that’s not really how pets work.

I mean, yes, you can pay a huge amount for a dog that knows commands and things, but Dog’s aren’t robots where you say a command and they just do it, you still need training and you need to develop the bond with them.

Even with service dogs that are trained to do a certain job, there’s a lot of work involved in transferring to a handler.

TwoLeftSocksWithHoles · 20/11/2022 15:47

Here's one that might suit...
You should have no issues at all,
Great with kids,
House trained,
Can be left alone for long periods,
Does not need a daily walk (you can just push it round the house when you want)
It's on eBay for £250

LimeCheesecake · 20/11/2022 15:51

Serious answer - show breeders often have dogs that are too old to breed from or show anymore they are wiling to rehome to families, they will have a decent level of training. But might not be used to small children etc.

I echo others and suggest if a puppy is too much for you and you have been unable to rescue, a dog might not be right for your family.

AlwaysGinPlease · 20/11/2022 15:53

Unbelievable ignorance. You certainly don't deserve a dog. Get a cuddly toy.

Whats a fully trained dog? You could try a retired service or police dog.

Police dogs live outside in kennels at their handlers homes. Whilst they will be house trained in terms of toilet they will need to adjust to living inside and what that brings. Also, some of them are big and aggressive (that's why they have them) and have spent 7+ years biting on command with a handler they've bonded with. If you're looking at a Police Dog I'd want a drugs/cash/cadaver dog but they've still been working dogs and are used to huge amounts of exercise and outside living.

Artygirlghost · 20/11/2022 15:56

Please do us all, and the dog, a favour and don't even think of getting a pet...

You are not cut out to own a dog if you think you can expect an animal to behave perfectly and not have to do any work with them.

There are not just an accessory that you can carry around like a handbag.

LimeCheesecake · 20/11/2022 16:02

Oh and our neighbours rehomed an adult, “fully trained and used to kids” dog - but this was via a friend of a friend who knew a single mother who sadly developed a disability that meant she couldn’t walk the dog anymore so was looking not to sell, but to suitably rehome her 18 month old dog.

They have a fabulous bouncy Labrador cross, already trained and great with older kids- but just got lucky that someone else who’d been a really good owner in terms of training had such terrible luck with their health and didn’t have a family member who was willing to take on such a big energetic dog.

It happens, but you might not get a say in the breed and not get so lucky with the level of training done by the previous owner.

BRILLIANT

snowballer · 20/11/2022 16:06

I'd also like a fully trained child please - any idea where to get one ready made?

OP seriously. A dog's training is a lot to do with its bonding relationship with you. You don't sound at all like you have the time to own a dog. Do the mythical dog a favour and get some fish instead.

thelobsterquadrille · 20/11/2022 16:07

You're not remotely ready for the responsibilities of dog ownership.

ahunf · 20/11/2022 16:08

I suppose you could pay someone to bring the puppy up for you for a year or so but they it's not your dog until it's older?

You could rescue an older dog?

boboshmobo · 20/11/2022 16:10

Best thread ever , I presume you didn't grow up with dogs OP!!

Fully trained 1 year old dog ffs ! You know dogs have a mind of their own don't you! 🙄🙄

AlwaysGinPlease · 20/11/2022 16:10

@ahunf oh come on, for goodness sake! This is a sentient being we are talking about. Op shouldn't get a dog that's clear!

MadeofCheeese · 20/11/2022 16:13

My dog is excellently trained. I put in hours of effort everyday. She is always complimented on her behavior. Then I got pregnant and now have a baby. Her recall has gone to shit and she is playing up because of the change. You can't just expect them to stay "perfect" they are living creatures with behaviors and emotions.

I now am able to put the time back into reinforcing recall and training her to walk by the pram as it is not her fault but mine. But she has been a wild, slightly neglected child for 6 months so this will take time

Honestly I agree with everyone else, you sound clueless about the time and effort it takes to be a good dog owner. Get a cat.

AppleDumplingWithCustard · 20/11/2022 16:17

Please don’t get a dog. You obviously have no idea.

OnceAgainWithFeeling · 20/11/2022 16:19

BlessedBeTheFruitCake · 20/11/2022 15:25

A guide dog that hasn’t passed the final stage training would be pretty well trained but probably not suitable with allergies in the mix.

We had a failed guide dog as a dog when I was growing up. I believe they’ve cracked the breeding so that failures are extremely rare these days.

plinkypots · 20/11/2022 16:21

Contact breeders of the breeds youre interested in OP. On occasion they will have 1-2 year old dogs held back for breeding that have developed a fault (think over bite etc) but have been socialised and trained. I'm sure the OP realises that training will have to be ongoing. It is more than possible to get a young adult dog from a breeder.

Handsnotwands · 20/11/2022 16:22

Our dog (a rescue) came very well trained

strangely over the years he’s become less well trained 😂 mostly because we over indulge him and spoil him rotten so he now goes on the sofa and on the beds and if you leave a biscuit in front of him he’ll assume it’s for him and help himself. He didn’t used to do any of that!

Wolfiefan · 20/11/2022 16:23

I’m sure there are dubious people who buy from commercial breeders (churning puppies out) then bully a puppy into submission then selling it at £££££ as “trained”.
Please don’t.
And allergies? No breed is hypoallergenic. Some breeds may set off allergies more or less but strangers can’t tell you which will work for you.
