Just wondering the reasons you might favour one sex over another?

OP posts:

Honestly, no, it doesn’t matter, it’s just personal preference.

If I was looking for a puppy then the right breeder would matter more to me and with a rescue then it’s just about the right fit. I prefer boys, but, I’d take a girl.

I prefer boys because I find them more biddable and affectionate, but I’ve seen many people say that’s why they prefer girls 😂

I can’t be doing with seasons, or any of the stuff that comes with that, but equally people don’t like boys scentmarking (though some girls do too) and lots of people seem to object to seeing their penis.

So, I reckon it’s just a swings and roundabouts type thing.

Tumbleweed101 · 10/11/2022 22:23

I currently have my first boy dog after only have girls. I've found he is more 'naughty' and has a bit more character. The girls have been lovely, just without the spark he has.
I find he does mark in certain situations although not much since he was neutered. He barks more too, but that could be a breed thing more than a sex thing.
I think I would get another boy if I had another dog right now, but think I'd choose a girl if I needed an easier personality. It's very personal preference but both are equal, just depends what you're looking for.

Pumpkinpatchlookinggood · 10/11/2022 22:24

The last thing I need is a ddogs balls or penis on my sofa....
And I def don't want any humping going on!

TwoSpoonsofSugar · 11/11/2022 00:25

I wanted a boy and DH wanted a girl. I think we each wanted the opposite sex to ourselves! He also wanted a girl because we have a large breed dog and he felt a girl would be smaller.

We did end up getting a girl. I wish I had stuck to my guns as we now have to deal with seasons and fears about accidental pregnancies until she's spayed.

Personality wise, she's really chilled and calm and amazing with the kids so I'm happy about that. Not sure how much of that is to do with gender though as we picked the calmest girl in the litter and her parents both had calm temperaments too.

Female dogs hump just much as male dogs do 🤷🏻‍♀️

fallfallfall · 11/11/2022 06:14

Size, males are often bigger. If you want a smaller version of a big dog go for a bitch.

They’d have to be lying on their front with their back legs stretched flat out behind them - I’ve never had a dog that does that on things 😂 and they’re furry on most dogs.

It’s as valid as me not wanting to deal with a bitch in season though to be fair.

Humping though isn’t really a sex based thing, lots of bitches do it too, it’s like mouthing, they do it when they’re excited or overtired. That’s how I’ve always treated it as well and I’ve never had an adult dog that continued to do it, even ones I’ve got as adults.

tocahairchop · 11/11/2022 07:34

Not sure there's much difference to be honest in terms of personality...that's maybe more down to breed/parents. We have a girl who is pretty calm and very affectionate. Seasons are a pain but I wouldn't like the marking with a boy dog, wouldn't bother everyone. You'd be better choosing a pup that seems right for your circumstances than planning for boy/bitch in my opinion.

KendrickLamaze · 11/11/2022 07:43

I've always had boys. It wasn't the reason why but after seeing friends and family with girls, I would now only get a rescue older female if I must get a female as seasons are a huge pain. My mum has two girls who are very loving and sweet but it's more likely the breed. If I had full choice it would be a male every time.

My entire male has never humped but he does seem very proud of his testicles which are always "there" either swinging behind him when he walks or flopping out when he is lying down.

Before the breeding police come, I'm not breeding him but as an anxious dog I won't put him through all that if there are no negative affects from him having them. If he was jumping or aggressive then absolutely but the op plus recovery time at the vets would terrify him.

This is word for word what I would have posted - except in my case I'm on my first girl! (previously two boys). So I do think it's more down to the individual dog/breed.

Might also be because my girl is part Saluki... if it's insanity a spark you're looking for, a Saluki will give you that.

Girlintheframe · 11/11/2022 07:56

I honestly don't think it matters in terms of personality.

We've had both however I wouldn't get another female mainly because ours had a phantom pregnancy which was a nightmare and has put me off getting another.

Trulyweird1 · 11/11/2022 08:08

I have one of each - labs. He is very much a boy - show off , definitely her boss ( he’s older) , was an utter pain growing up, but is extremely calm, cuddly , great with kids and old people, bomb proof in fact. Never humps .
She is more independent, very energetic, flirty with DH , humps everything, but less outgoing than your average lab.
How much of this is due to sex, nurture ( she’s a rescue), or just different breeding is impossible to say.
They are both lovely.

Trulyweird1 · 11/11/2022 08:09

Meant to add, meet the puppies, with their mother, preferably see the dad if possible. Then see which dog appeals to you.

tabulahrasa · 11/11/2022 08:25

Oh and I forgot, entirely stupid and I could just say yes or good by itself, but...

I have one of those Scottish accents with svarabhakti vowels, so good girl becomes good gurrel and becomes a bit awkward as a marker for behaviour.

KangarooKenny · 11/11/2022 08:28

I personally prefer females. Mine have never humped, and I’m not a fan of seeing the males lipstick !

Byelaws · 11/11/2022 08:32

I only had boys until my current girl. She is such a sweetie but the seasons are a PITA. I am a boy dog person generally but the sex is much much less important than lots of other characteristics.

SybilThePup · 11/11/2022 08:37

I have a husband and 3 ds's. My house is full enough of males.

I chose a bitch purely so I could pick a pretty, girly name and so that I could buy pretty toys and blankets 😂

Lipstick lol ... same here! Love my girl, no seasons once they're neutered.

Just wondering the reasons you might favour one sex over another?

A lot of people say it doesn't matter - but I've had 6 bitches and 7 males over 40yrs. Currently have one bitch and two males.

As a bit of research, go onto any dog rescue site, Rspca, dogs trust, many tears etc. Count how many of the dogs in rescue are male and how many female. Whenever I look it's definitely more males, and younger males. There's a reason for that.

I have had a gundog breed for decades, it is usually poorly trained, strong, adolescent males in that breed who end up needing rehoming.

My own preference is for bitches, ironically because I find them less clingy and needy than the boys - more independent. Though to be fair, my own dd reckons it's a good thing I never had a son as it's totally my fault they are like that 🤣🤷🏼‍♀️

faffadoodledo · 11/11/2022 08:56

Both boy dogs I've had have been the most affectionate and gorgeous creatures. Trainable and fun too. But that's not to say girls wouldn't have been too!

nannybeach · 11/11/2022 09:03

Have had both. Have both now. A toy (16) I remember puberty, when he was the perfect height to scent mark, the bed and sofa. All are castrated/spayed. Walking them,he scent marks all the time. Temperament,no difference. Hubby had an unspayed bitch...we had the phantom pregnancies, and ripped up carpet. Would go for a bitch everytime.

Andanotherginplease · 11/11/2022 09:13

On a small breed it wouldn't bother me either way. In a large breed, a bitch is normally slightly smaller, therefore by choice I'd have a bitch. That said, I have a large breed dog because that's what was available from my breeder - he's bigger than I'd hoped but wouldn't be without him.

Choconut · 11/11/2022 09:34

I prefer girls. I hate boys willies and just find girls easier generally, I think I just gel better with them.

Floralnomad · 11/11/2022 09:36

We got a rescue puppy so didn’t get a choice really but at that time my preference was for a boy and we got a boy . He is absolutely perfect in every way except he has over the years developed a problem and now aged 12 has recurrent paraphimosis so I have to ‘put him away’ at least once , often twice a day - I’m not having another male dog .

vjg13 · 11/11/2022 10:00

Yikes, deeply regret googling paraphimosis 😱 I came in to say I've found males slightly more affectionate but I really miss my old greyhound girl who was very giddy. I really don't mind for my next dog and we're looking for a rescue lurcher at the moment.
