How much walking do you do?

I have ddog who is 1.5 years old (a cross breed). Tuesday to Thursday he is walked every morning for 40 minutes, lunch time 45 minutes to an hour and then 45 minutes to an hour again the the evening.

Friday to Monday he goes less walks, but much, much longer. 2-3 hours long for one walk, and also a short 20-30 minute walk.

Overall, do you think that's enough?

Yep it is enough (If it is off lead and he can sniff, mooch about and run for fun)

Watch his behaviour. If he is happy chilled able to relax when you are at home then great.

thelobsterquadrille · 08/11/2022 17:25

Sounds like plenty. A tired dog is a happy, well-behaved dog as a general rule.

My beagle gets an hour most days. He's four and has no behavioural issues and just sleeps all day Grin

EdithStourton · 08/11/2022 18:09

That sounds like loads.

I have two gundogs, a breed known for high energy. They get 40 mins in the morning, about 15 mins at lunchtime, and either 20-30 mins training each in the afternoon, or 30-40 mins walk. Almost all of this is off-lead, and they get the odd extra long walk or an hour+ run with DH.

Fit, happy and mostly chilled around the house. To be honest, keeping their brains busy is just as important as keeping them physically fit.

Thanks all, and I see someone else has posted a similar question!

He's mainly happy and zonked in the evenings, but he also gets up to mischief during the day. Might just be his age though...

30-45mins in the morning
then 20min round the block at some point in the afternoon.
I have a sprocker and to much stimulation/ exercise and he’s a lunatic so this works well for us. We train whilst out walking

CoffeandTiaMaria · 08/11/2022 18:21

My rescue is 21 months old and gets an hour walk in the morning and a shorter (20-30 minutes) one with me in the evening or a really long walk DH (upto 4 hours).
She’s quite happy with this, we also play at home, she has brain games etc.

daveyfish · 08/11/2022 18:24

Similar duration to you
weekdays 30 mins in the morning
20 to 30 mins at lunch time
about an hour in the evening
20 mins last thing at night

weekends the same pattern but morning walk will be around an hour as well

he’s lazy and chilled in the house, pretty hyper on his walks though

lessthanathirdofanacre · 08/11/2022 18:33

I have a dog (herding breed) of about the same age. During the week he has a walk in the morning, anywhere from 30 minutes to an hour, though it's usually about 40-45 minutes. In the afternoon he has some sort of vigorous exercise involving either running or swimming (weather permitting) for about an hour. Then he has a short walk (15-20 minutes) before bed. At weekends we often go on longer walks. He's happy and calm at home. Although some people insist that dogs of his breed need to run for hours and hours a day, I haven't found that to be the case at all.

17CherryTreeLane · 08/11/2022 18:40

I've never had a dog before, so this is all really helpful.

It does take up a lot of time though, not sure how I'm meant to do anything else.

We have a 2 yr old German shepherd. On a weekday she normally gets 20-30 mins first thing in the morning, then an hour in the afternoon where I try and let her off lead and throw a ball, but not always possible due to the sheer number of dogs there can be in the field. If I can't let her off we go for a long walk. Then before bed she gets 10 mins around the block.

Weekends she usually gets a long walk in the mornings because it's much quieter, and then a short 10/20 min one in the afternoon and then before bed.

GuyFawkesDay · 08/11/2022 18:55

Cocker spaniel here. He gets 1hr on lead during day split into early morning mooch and late morning bigger walk. When I get in (I can be home by 3:30) I do off lead walk and some training with him which is usually 45-60 minutes

He's zonked most of the day!

HairyMcLarie · 08/11/2022 19:05

That's loads! My 1.5 year cross breed has two one hour or so walks a day depending on whether I'm working or not.

Hour on the beach in the morning, running around with her friends, swimming, ball chasing. If I'm at work then a 20 minute rock around the block.

DH then takes her out for another hour or so every afternoon so beach again or a forest hike.

9pm slow sniff around the neighbourhood for 20 minutes

If she's been to daycare then that's her exercise for the day and she's sparko from when she gets home.

She seems pretty happy with that

17CherryTreeLane · 08/11/2022 19:12

I haven't tried him swimming yet, must actually do that!!

moonypadfootprongs · 08/11/2022 19:19

Way too much in my opinion. Mine get 1hr to an 2.5hrs tops a day.
Better to tire them out with brain games and training than lots of pavement pounding. Teaching them to settle at home is far more important. The more you exercise them the fitter they get and the more you need to exercise them. Far better to teach them how to chill at home.

moonypadfootprongs · 08/11/2022 19:19

That was supposed to be 1.5hrs not 2.5

Forfukzsake · 08/11/2022 19:57

During the week hour in the morning on lead and an hour to an hour and a half off lead at lunchtime.
Weekends tend to be one 2 or 3 hour walk mostly off lead.

He's a young dog and he seems satisfied.

longtompot · 08/11/2022 20:01

Mine, 10 year old cocker spaniel, gets two walks a day, about 30-40 mins morning and afternoon/evening. She gets a longer walk at the weekends with a shorter evening one. I used to give her an hour and half to two hour walk on a Sunday afternoon when she was younger, but haven't done that for a while.

17CherryTreeLane · 08/11/2022 21:14

He's not often pavement pounding @moonypadfootprongs, as it's mostly in forests/fields. I agree we should perhaps do more brain games though, and will gladly reduce a walk to replace it with that, even just to get a bit of time back for myself.

ruddy heck that's a lot. I volunteer walk other people's dogs.

7yr old lurcher, I think she gets 50 minutes with me 2x/week, 30-40 minutes 2 other days/week plus a very slow 15-20 minutes most afternoons. She utterly hates bad weather & really could be happy with just half hour total/day. She's tired after 40 minutes or so.

8yr old Westie-size terrier gets up to 50 minutes with me once a week. Another walker takes for 1-2 days/week maybe half hour each time. That's it. No other walks. But she'd benefit from a lot more walks. She's utterly manic when I take her.

15 yr old Lhaso Apso gets 10-15 ambling minutes once or twice every other week afaik.

Stretchandsnap · 08/11/2022 21:43

I do 60 mins in the morning mostly off lead sometimes play games or throw the ball on the way round the loop, then a couple times a week we meet another doggy friend for a walk and play at lunchtime for a hour, and then some evenings 30 mins on lead walk round the streets - I aim for at least 1.5 hours out and about during the week and at the weekends it’s usually longer as we do dog training on Saturdays too.

17CherryTreeLane · 08/11/2022 21:50

Sounds like I could cut him back a bit then. Will give it a try and see how he is. I do feel like he's taken over all my available time!

OP posts:
Hotpotatotoe · 08/11/2022 21:57

Unnecessary. My dog trainer would say that's way too much and you're basically training them into being an athlete so they will need and come to expect it.

Dogs will be fine if they go without a walk for a day as long as they have other stimulation.

Why are you walking them so much?

Do you have a garden they can toilet in? If so it's completely unnecessary.

As pp say do training, brain games, scentwork.

My dog is 1 yr old and usually gets a 45-50 min walk either morning or lunch plus a shorter walk around the block before bed but we don't have a garden they also run/walk around during the day.

TotheletterofthelawTHELETTER · 08/11/2022 21:57

My cockapoo is 1. She gets:
10 minutes round the block first thing
20 minute slow lead walk with my dad midday
30-45 off leaf mix after work
10 minutes round block before bed

weekends are about the same but instead of 2 separate mid day walks she’ll get 1 longer walk sometimes

Hotpotatotoe · 08/11/2022 21:59

I don't know the exact figures but it's something like ten minutes training/work indoors/sniffing is equivalent to over an hour's walk.

Walking is the lazy dog owners activity basically (and I'm guilty of it!) The indoor stimulation is actually harder work - for humans as well as dogs!
