Apologies if someone has already started a new thread. Couldn’t see one when I had a quick look.

As it’s a new thread, why don’t we all (re-) introduce ourselves. Ie. Good excuse for more cute puppy pictures!

I have RiverPup, who is now a 15 weeks old black Labrador.

Two pictures of when we first got him, and more recent.

Sorry - horrendously busy at work, I've just logged off.
I like sexier than a squirrel, it works for me and I'll say why:

  • I have the most playful of all playful dogs that loves games.
  • I learn like an engineer - by taking things apart and rebuilding. So just watching or reading or listening to something doesn't work for me, I need a combo and to understand.

The basic premise of the course is for your dog to want to be with you snd focus on you while you are out and about. Ultimately to help with recall. It uses a series of games to promote that. So rather than just telling your dog to come back it also wanting too?

A lot of the games are orientation games - sending the dog one way then back to you, then another. Once they are back to you it also includes a middle. To me they make sense.

I don't think it alone will give perfect recall but whilst I think I take wonderful care of my fluffy bundle I do think I should play with her more, to help our bond. Plus I can see she enjoys it and I have to admit, I think I was a bit boring just playing hide snd seek and tug with puzzle games, It's good to get more ideas.

I paid £16.20. I hate the 2 presenters, they set my teeth on edge. But they are trying to be motivators and all happy clappy so I can just about get past it.

Also - and I think this is important- my dog can regulate instantly. She matches my energy wonderfully - just luck. So if I sit down mid high octane game she will too. I can see how other dogs would get too manic - they offer alternatives to help but I'm the one taking it to extreme and running round the house like a loon..,

So in summary no, it won't solve recall for me on it's own but I've incorporated most things so far into our days and it's been worth it.

I've also had a trainer out and that was grand too.

Cocopuff · 22/01/2023 15:43

Thanks @BigBundleOfFluff that's really helpful. I think I will give it a go.

We took Coco out on the tube and to Canary Wharf yesterday for the winter lights festival. She was terrified of the tube and abit scared by all the crowds but did brilliantly with walking and being in strange places (considering she normally sleeps most of the evening!). She slept very well after getting home too.

Riverlee · 22/01/2023 18:52

Yes, I think I’ll give it a go also.

We joined a new, follow-on, puppy class during the week with a different group (first people not running one at the moment). They did things a big differently and I think both RiverPup and I felt it was a bit overwhelming. Consequently RiverPup was the boisterous, hyper one, wanting to say hi to everyone, human and canine. Needless to say, we didn’t get the dog of the day certificate!

highlandcoo · 22/01/2023 19:16

Highlandpup was the boisterous hyper one at puppy class too! They put out all sorts of tunnels, buckets, different surfaces to walk on etc and several people had to coax their tentative puppies to be brave enough to explore, whereas we charged round like a mad thing, wanting to jump and play with everyone .. no encouragement required!
Next week they are planning how to greet off-lead "but will be choosing carefully who takes part and it won't be everyone".
He did excel at the Sit, Lie Down and Wait commands though, so that was a proud moment.
He's just that little bit older and bigger than the other pups and as we left and the next class was waiting, we realised he would probably have fitted in much better with them. He went up to say hi to another pup of similar size and they had a really nice encounter, play-bowing and cuffing one another gently, whereas in our class I think the others are finding him a bit bouncy and over-friendly.

highlandcoo · 22/01/2023 19:22

And this is Highlandpup now. Who wouldn’t want to be his friend? I am slightly biased ..

Can I join please? We picked up our bedlington whippet puppy yesterday. Everything I read in the lead up to dog ownership has evaporated and I don’t feel as though I know what I’m doing! She’s cute though. That’s what gets you through, right? Following closely for pearls of wisdom!

HighlandPup DOES look like a very cute highland cow!

welcome @EyeBetOnSky you'll be fine!!

well done taking CocoPup into town @Cocopuff i did that a bit when Haku was a puppy but haven’t in months so hed probably be terrified now. He’s too big for the tube or bus as I couldn’t pick him up but I should probably try him on the train again. The most difficult but would likely be getting out of Waterloo station as it’s so busy

JoshLymanIsHotterThanSam · 23/01/2023 07:13

Been invited over by @Riverlee .

My pup is 10 weeks old today. She’s a JRT x Frenchie. Cute as a button and at the moment making me wonder why I thought it was such a good idea to get a second dog 😂.

Older dog is same crossbreed and a delight to have around the house.

DPup is a tiny little landshark , it’s a good job she’s as cute as a button.

Welcome @JoshLymanIsHotterThanSam (great name!) - your pup is very cute!

Coco is back to refusing food - missed dinner last night and should be starving for breakfast but refusing that too. Seems ok in herself. I wonder if it’s teething

Cocopuff · 23/01/2023 07:24

And welcome @EyeBetOnSky - your pup is adorable too

Oh she is soooo gorgeous. I follow a Bedlington whippet on insta. Absolutely lovely combination of breeds. Would really consider one if we are to ever get a 2nd dog. What is their temperament meant to be like?

Orangebadger · 23/01/2023 09:26

@JoshLymanIsHotterThanSam gorgeous pup! Love JRTs not as familiar with Frenchies though. Do you have a photo of your older dog too?

JoshLymanIsHotterThanSam · 23/01/2023 09:34

@Orangebadger

The older one has a Frenchie mom and JRT dad-opposite to Dpup who has JRT mom and Frenchie dad.

Anyway here’s a pic of DDog for you.

Puppy Survival Thread - as we approach Fireworks night for the first time…
Orangebadger · 23/01/2023 09:39

@JoshLymanIsHotterThanSam gorgeous! You can really see both breeds. Frenchie ears for sure! But more of a JRT coat.

JoshLymanIsHotterThanSam · 23/01/2023 09:47

@Orangebadger she is beautiful. She’s more Frenchie in temperament so is quite lazy and loves to sleep and cuddle. But she loves to chase squirrels in the park which I suspect is her JRT lineage 😂.

Years ago we just had JRTs but fell in love with DDog when we saw her and tbh I think it’s a really good cross, she has no breathing problems because she has a proper nose. I do love Frenchies but I do wish they’d breed a nose back into them.

EyeBetOnSky · 23/01/2023 09:57

@Orangebadger thanks-I’ve wanted a bedlington whippet forever. Such a sucker for a scruffy dog! They’re generally supposed to be fairly quiet, affectionate, snoozy dogs with a need for a mad half hour and a good run. Recall training starts now though-and even then there’s a chance that squirrels trump all! I’m only two days in but would recommend!

Yes mine is a hound too, a basset fauve de Bretagne ( basically a French hound dog!) she's 16 weeks old, she doesn't have her full coat yet but if you have a google, they are scruffy dogs too!

Recall training in the park starting here too this week, she's 16 weeks old now. I have my long lead arriving today and am using bits of cocktail sausages as bait! But if she gets a scent, it might be game over! I am told it gets worse the older they get by experienced hound owners. So even if it works right now it probably won't after about 9 months old! I live in hope!

Yes I agree about the nose with Frenchies. But yes your one has a proper snout so you get the good of the Frenchie without all those breathing problems.

Oh she is GORGEOUS! Fingers crossed the training goes well-might as well enjoy at least some success before adolescence kicks in. I’m yet to find a treat that my pup will do anything for. I’ll add cocktail sausages to my shopping list 🙂

ZiggZagg · 23/01/2023 19:38

Iris absolutely hates baths, she gets so snappy and barky afterwards! Although didn't mind jumping in a lake yesterday causing me to fall and sustain another dog related injury!

She's being very bitey and I've noticed lots of her teeth have fallen out! So cute 🥰

And still weeing and pooing in the house, despite actually being outside of the house most of the time! She waits until she comes in! I've tried ignoring but my patience is wearing thin this week! Any ideas?

Obligatory picture attached ♥️

Hello! I have been reading and following but now I have a question and I hope you can help or at least tell me I'm not alone!

We have a 15 week old spaniel. He sleeps really well at night closed in his crate from about 10pm - 6ish and normally has a morning nap in there of about an hour at around 9. He will then Stay awake until after his lunch and maybe have another hour or 90 minutes (max). After that he will not nap in his crate, may doze on the floor in his puppy pen while we work but will jump up if we move around or leave the room.

Come the evening he is clearly tired and bitey and when we come through to the lounge will not settle. Help! Tell me he will get better, I want to sit down in the evening and not deal with barking and leaping.

He enjoys his walks but I'm really looking forward to being able to do more and take him further.
