How many dogs do you currently have? And why that number?

DreamingOfSoftWhiteSand · 17/10/2022 15:53

We currently have four dogs - we've had more but at the moment we have four. All rescues. They are no more of a handful than two or three and there are many times when they are all having a snooze, or playing by themselves, or with each other, and we don't see them for quite a while! We wouldn't be without them.

How many dogs you do have? Would you have more at the same time? Why did you pick that many dogs?

PS: if space (and money) were no issue, we'd have many more - but keeping our place clean already takes our cleaner three hours each day, Monday-Friday!

Just the one, that’s all I can afford

rottweilersrock · 20/10/2022 19:04

We’ve got 3 for now. 5, 3 and 7 months old. No more for at least 2 years, when we will maybe have a litter from the youngest.
It is a big commitment, and definitely restricting with regards to days out/holidays etc. But we wouldn’t have it any other way!

Moominfanjo · 20/10/2022 19:16

It's going to be 1 on Saturday because we are picking up our first. It would be 10 if I had my way because I just love doggos!

hiredandsqueak · 20/10/2022 19:29

We have one, a 13 year old rescue who really didn't like dogs when we got her four years ago. She's pretty good with dogs now but don't think she'd appreciate having one live with her. Plus she'd had a rough life so think she deserves our undivided attention and love.

Giggorata · 20/10/2022 19:37

We vary between 2 and 3 dogs, because we have committed to never having a dog alone.
This is because one of our dogs went into such a deep depression when he lost his friend that we feared for him, and ended up buying him a puppy.
So we plan our dog family, in order that there is always at least one older dog with a younger. This sometimes means an overlap.
That is OK.

mondaytosunday · 20/10/2022 20:03

Two. We got one and that was going to be it. Then my husband died suddenly and I made the decision to move us to a cheaper area 70 miles away. My very young children had mixed feelings about this so I promised them another dog - and I wanted one too anyway (we also had two cats).
Now my dogs are 11 and 13, one has just had cancer, and they are both very precious members of the family. I'm dreading it when the time comes that one will die- I'm not sentimental about animals, but they have meant a lot to us.

Foolsandtheirmoney · 20/10/2022 20:09

2 because realistically I wouldn't be able to walk more than that at once. One is a bit reactive so it can take a lot of patience on walks and I always have to be aware of what's going on around me.

I would love another and just the other day found myself looking longingly at a greyhound online that is in our local pound but I know logically it would be too much to handle.

Billyhargrovesmullet · 20/10/2022 20:12

One and will stay at one and I wouldn’t get another after him. He’s gorgeous and I love him to bits but I’ve never had a dog before and know now I’m a cat person through and through

Strokethefurrywall · 20/10/2022 20:13

Had 2, now have 1 since Elvis died last year. Frank is 11 and I won't have another puppy, he needs to enjoy his old age with us.

And frankly, I'm busy enough and as much as I love dogs, I'm not having another one for a while. Once Frank goes, we may foster dogs on a short term basis for our local humane society (dogs needing heart worm treatment, or getting ready to fly off island to a new home), but I don't want a full time commitment for a while.

2000lightyearsaway123 · 20/10/2022 20:15

2 rescues. I would have many more but we don't have the space in the house or the car and ours come everywhere with us. We also probably couldn't comfortable stretch to more financially.

As well as that one of ours has developed a fear of other dogs that we are working on but I doubt she would ever be happy with a permanent addition and her needs come first.

MrsTimRiggins · 20/10/2022 20:18

Four.
A 10 year old cockapoo who I got when I was 19 and who is the most wonderful loyal pal in the world.
A 9 month old cavapoo who was a rescue, of sorts. It was us or pts. She’s a tool but we’re very fond of her. She’s my 1yo sons dog, her choice not ours.
Two New Zealand huntaways, brothers (different litters), a 3 year old and a 5 year old. They’re brilliant guard dogs, even better working dogs and their constant presence brings a certain sort of comfort to the yard.
I don’t need or want any more dogs but that’s never made much difference in the past!

DemBonesDemBones · 20/10/2022 20:21

One. Because my family wont let me have 10.

ChardonnaysBeastlyCat · 20/10/2022 20:23

Two.

They are loosely related, one is younger and came to us when the second DC left for university.

One. Because my family wont let me have 10.

We have identical dog goals. When I am retired I will have as many rescue/foster dogs as I can safely manage.

NotaFR · 21/10/2022 17:23

3 dogs 2 are rescues (ex breeding Cav and a Serbian street dog). Then we got a cocker puppy....3 is too many for us. I love them but we won't replace when we lose one.
The puppy is hard work....

DemBonesDemBones · 21/10/2022 18:02

@Paq I know of a lady that has TEN greyhounds and she is living my dream life Grin

sueelleker · 22/10/2022 19:00

I'm now visualizing ten greyhounds draped all over the furniture! I hope she has a big house.

HollyJollypup · 22/10/2022 22:32

1 at the moment as it’s my first but I can’t see myself ever having more then 1 at a time.
My parents will have my dog when we go on holiday/away for weekends or if I do a day out with the kids in school holidays etc.
I think asking them to look after more then 1 dog would be taking the piss and limit me so I won’t do it.

Shockmeafter · 22/10/2022 22:33

None. Dogs are thick as fuck and annoying

Probably think you are annoying

It makes complete sense then that you are on ‘The Doghouse’ part of MN.

😂😂😂

Shockmeafter · 23/10/2022 10:21

Thread was on Active page and it asked a question so I answered 🤷🏼‍♀️

Dogs possibly think I’m annoying but as they can’t actually speak that’s pure speculation and I’d need evidence

BusyBeaMe · 23/10/2022 10:26

None. I’m scared of them! Genuinely interested, how big a house/garden do you need for more than 1 dog? Surely you’d be tripping over them all the time and there would be utter chaos. No different to toddlers, I suppose…

No bigger than with one. they tend to clump.

BusyBeaMe · 23/10/2022 10:30

@ChardonnaysBeastlyCat might be open to trade 3 children for 3 non-jumpy, non-barky dogs then!
