When did you get your bitch spayed?

Our vet has suggested we get our pup done sooner rather than later, as there's no evidence to suggest going through a season is beneficial for them.

They said we should book in anytime from 6m.

Just wondering what other people's experiences are.

We do it after 2 seasons

DramaAlpaca · 07/10/2022 14:27

After she's had one season

forumsempronii · 07/10/2022 14:29

What breed is your dog?

PinkPlantCase · 07/10/2022 14:33

We had a dog once who developed inconvenience around age 3/4 and the vets suspected it was because she way spayed too early.

SkyBlueCity · 07/10/2022 14:35

We had our sprocker done just after 6 months. Apart from the fact that it was harder to keep her resting during recovery, she has been absolutely fine.

Our vet (and friends in the vetinary world), had said the same to us.

And also, I would highly recommend the surgical suits for recovery instead of the cone of shame!!

Best of luck with it whatever you choose to do xx

After 2 seasons

LostSleep · 07/10/2022 14:38

We waited until after 2 seasons. We met one owner who had it done at 6 months (large dog) and said that the dog had remained very puppy like and had put that down to getting spayed to early. Not sure if that was actually the reason though

FlorettaB · 07/10/2022 14:41

After 2 seasons because she had a phantom pregnancy. Without that, it would have been after her first season. I was 100% sure that I could ensure she wouldn’t get pregnant.

Notplayingball · 07/10/2022 14:42

18 months old. After first season.

We've had all ours spayed before their first season.

KangarooKenny · 07/10/2022 15:00

After her second season.
Please let her have one season at least, to mature.

GetOffTheRoof · 07/10/2022 15:06

Our first had one season, so she was about 10mths old. I'm still unsure if that was the correct one advice. She's 27kg fully grown.

Our second is a Romanian rescue, and she is about 7 years old and has just been properly spayed. The less said about the butchery someone did to her womb and calling it a spay the better. She's 18kg fully grown.

I know the advice varies hugely from vet to vet and especially based on dog weight and history of seasons.

EdithStourton · 07/10/2022 15:16

When physically and socially mature. Current youngster will be having at least three seasons.

Such research as there is indicates that the physical risks and benefits of spaying at various ages differ by breed. I like my dogs to mentally adult and they are of a breed that's notoriously late to mature, so I wait.

forumsempronii · 07/10/2022 15:26

Studies have shown there is an increase in joint issues in labs spayed before one year of age so for that reason I would wait until at least a year old.

GrouchyKiwi · 07/10/2022 15:34

After her second season, to allow time for growth plates to close (she's a large breed). Typically for large breeds you're encouraged to wait till they're 2 years old, but our girl had such miserable seasons that we got it done as soon as possible after her second one. She was a bit older than 18 months.

demokitty · 07/10/2022 16:10

I have a lab. I got her spayed after her second season, she was 17 months. The main thing I wanted (after reading up) was for her to have had one season and be over a year old. The timing of her first season meant that it was better to wait until after the second one. She not 3 yet, so I can't really comment on long term effects, but short term; she has been fine.

Wolfiefan · 07/10/2022 17:53

I agree with Edith.

Endogal · 07/10/2022 18:01

We had our lab done at 1 year and she had one season before that. Our vet said after one or two seasons was best, and it was 6 or 2 threes in terms of risks for both of those timings. Her first season was a nightmare, she bled for weeks and hated her sanitary belt so we decided not to put her through it again. To counteract risk of massive puppy and surgery scar splitting we had her done laparascopically and fully recommend! A couple of hundred quid more but her recovery was so quick and no cone/ t-shirt needed!

outtheshowernow · 07/10/2022 18:09

Border collie 6 months

Spanielsarepainless · 07/10/2022 19:45

For either sex they should be physically and mentally mature before neutering. I won't be getting my Lab done before two years old.

Ship · 07/10/2022 19:48

My vet told me to wait one season for my lab. I think she was just under a year old. She’s 2 now and all is fine. I rang around a few vets because I had wanted to spay her earlier but they all recommended at least one season as it’s meant to be better for them so I waited.

HighlandPony · 07/10/2022 19:53

After her second litter because she wasn’t having anymore and wasn’t on the circuit anymore so didn’t have to be entire. Not castrated the dog because he’s young enough to go back into ft or circuit but my bitch is too old now.

catchthedog · 07/10/2022 19:57

3 months after the first season in the safe zone. we didnt want to risk more for the increasing cancer risks that I'd read quite a bit about.

Redannie118 · 07/10/2022 20:01

Mine was a rescue JRT. Vet said he thought she was somewhere between 1 and 2 years old, but he wouldnt spay until we had seen her have a season. She had one around 8 weeks later and we had her done afterwards. Shes 14 now with no health issues apart from losing some teeth and a bit arthritis in her hip.
