Getting your dog to take tablets

Mochacino · 30/09/2022 15:58

Struggling to get my dog to take their drontal. It’s what I have so it will have to be this quarters worming tablet, I can ask the vet for a new one next time . Was never a problem before but it’s getting spat out or the food I put it in is ignored.

have you any foolproof tips to get my hound to take their tablets?
Much appreciated. Thanks

Wrap in cheese

Whylurkwhenicanjoinin · 30/09/2022 15:58

Cheese? Never fails with ours.

TheUntiedShoelace · 30/09/2022 16:00

Lidl/Aldi 50p pate.

scoop small ball of pate with spoon, give dog without pill. (ha! False sense of security!)
scoop another with pill rolled up inside.
scoop one more without to encourage them to swallow, or if it's the end of the tub allow them to lick it clean.

GeorgeorRuth · 30/09/2022 16:00

Crushed into wet cat food 😆

Choccowoofwoof · 30/09/2022 16:01

Hi, I also have a very suspicious dog when it comes to tablets. In the past I tried putting them inside hotdogs/chunks of cheese but she dissected them and spat the tablets out! This time I crushed the tablets into a powder and mixed them in with scrambled egg, or tuna and she didn’t even realise. Keeping my fingers crossed it works the next time. Good luck

We used to play catch the treat throw a couple throw a tablet throw a treat again

This - I was also going to suggest pate.

It NEVER fails!

Thank you. Will try all of the, even the cat food😂
I’ve had peanut butter, chicken and the tablet spat back at me already and this is a dog who is very good motivated!

My boy is strong and stubborn - pills were a challenge until I realised sticking a pill in a cheese triangle was the way to go. Works every time!

MayThe4th · 30/09/2022 16:05

Dairylee slices. Just rip a bit off the slice, wrap it round the pill, squash it together into a ball. Then give the dog the tablet from the front. Dog opens its mouth you flick the cheese in and hold your hand under its chin until it swallows. Which it will.

Never fails with mine who will spit pills out of anything else. He needs to take pills twice a day and comes to me when it’s medicine time.

SirChenjins · 30/09/2022 16:12

We have resorted to lifting his head so his nose is pointing to the ceiling, gently opening his mouth, putting the tablet at the back, and rubbing his throat to get him to swallow - he’s a devious bugger and will lick any food stuff off the tablet and then spit it out. We’ve tried all sorts but nope, he’s not having it - he’s even been known to keep the tablet in his mouth and spit it out later.

MrsMorton · 30/09/2022 16:13

Open their mouth, push the tablet to the back, hold their mouth shut and either, blow up their nose or massage their throat until they swallow. Never fails.

GrowThroughWhatYouGoThrough · 30/09/2022 16:13

I stick it in a babybel goes gone a treat!

forumsempronii · 30/09/2022 16:36

treat, treat, treat, pill in treat, treat, treat.

Or use a spot on wormer
or wormcount

isthismylifenow · 30/09/2022 17:03

I have one of these tablet spotters. He's on long term meds and it's so bad that we had to change to the (much more expensive) liquid medication. We still quite often have a squabble about me squirting it in his mouth, but it's way easier. The vet said he would get used to the tablets, but this is the one time I strongly disagree with our vet.

But when he has to have tablet form, I think we tried everything. Something soft but a but firm is your best bet, this is why cheese works. So it can be stuffed inside the food. Sausage works quite well too. BUT, it is so much easier if they don't see you prepare the sneaky snack... Once they get wind that there is something foreign in the food, the success rate is against you. I also find that because my ddog just simply doesn't trust me with sneaky snacks, I get DC to give it to him. They are the love of his life and would never be cruel enough to taint his snack like that. Hur hur. Ds claims a good dollop of peanut butter works best. Yogurt is a good call too, I just give him the little tub full with the offending item inside. It's not always a slam dunk though.

It's a struggle, I know.

Pumpkinpatchlookinggood · 30/09/2022 17:04

Shove it on a plate in bread and pretend it's your meal..

Mr Dramatic over here fails miserably with this one. The coughing and sputtering and gagging that takes place is quite a spectacle.

This is the method I use for my other dog, she isn't quite the drama artist, but it is so much easier if it can be done this way.

Hoppinggreen · 30/09/2022 17:09

Game changer for me.
While giving the sausage or whatever WITH the tablet in hold another tablet free piece in your other hand just above the dogs nose height so he has to look up at it.
Firstly they can’t spit it out unless they put their head down and secondly they are focussed on the getting the next bit so wolf it down

isthismylifenow · 30/09/2022 17:12

Mr Dramatic is so dramatic that he cannot even have his yearly vaccinations without having a distraction biscuit. And here they get more than one shot with kennel cough, rabies etc. So it's distraction biscuits. I think he is probably doing it as he just knows how to get extra biscuits. Can you guess the breed? 😊 But the crying and yelping are really quite something. He is a sturdy male large breed Labrador 😂. Not a little lap dog.

SirChenjins · 30/09/2022 17:18

Ours saw the bottle of pills the other night and ran away - DH found him hiding underneath the office chair. It’s ridiculous really - this is the dog that will happily eat horse poo and live spiders and drink muddy puddle water, but come at him with a tablet and he’s not having it. Cockapoo, natch. He should be on the stage.

chipsandpeas · 30/09/2022 17:21

wrapped in a piece of slice ham

ThisisMax · 30/09/2022 17:25

Dont want to boast but my GSD will sit and take! Always has. He is a good boy and knows its for his own good!

CaledonianSleeper · 30/09/2022 17:28

We go for a nice thick coating of butter - slides down and doesn’t need chewing. Never fails!

mountainsunsets · 30/09/2022 17:28

Pretend it's a treat.
