Getting your dog to take tablets

Mochacino · 30/09/2022 15:58

Struggling to get my dog to take their drontal. It’s what I have so it will have to be this quarters worming tablet, I can ask the vet for a new one next time . Was never a problem before but it’s getting spat out or the food I put it in is ignored.

have you any foolproof tips to get my hound to take their tablets?
Much appreciated. Thanks

I tried all the treats. It works if I choo his Nexguard up and mix with a tin of sardines and put on his meal. Worth a try, but that one is a palatable chew anyway.

For actual tablets I am afraid I do the open his mouth, drop pill to back, close dogs mouth and then stroke his throat. He swallows it immediately and no fuss. I tried SO many tricks but he was wise to the lot. This way saves so much stress.

Lidl/Aldi 50p pate.

scoop small ball of pate with spoon, give dog without pill. (ha! False sense of security!)
scoop another with pill rolled up inside.
scoop one more without to encourage them to swallow, or if it's the end of the tub allow them to lick it clean.

This, works a treat!

Tried ham, cheese, sausage, they dont work with a determined dog, pate is your friend.

Thank you all for your suggestions, tried absolutely every food in my arsenal and gave up half way through the dosing. DH put them into his dinner when he got home and it worked🤣

Poor dog wouldn’t even take yogurt from me incase I laced it!

not sure what got into him today, yogurt or peanut butter always worked !

DH’s own dinner… the dog wouldn’t take his own dinner from me incase of drugging🤣

Dunked in Philadelphia

We just break it up and mix it with normal dinner - sometimes with a bit of raw mince or cheese on so it seems extra yummy. Always seems to lick the bowl clean.

Eyesopenwideawake · 01/10/2022 08:52

Condensed milk. With 6 dogs I have tried every combination under the sun - condensed milk has smashed it! Too sticky to lick off the tablet and so sweet they can't resist 😁

Cheese for us - but give a couple of pieces of just cheese first to lure her into a false sense of security. By the time the third piece comes with the tablet in she's not even chewing it so doesn't notice.

skedaddler · 01/10/2022 22:01

In food is usually fine, I cut it up

If he spots it , then I squash dog food around it and hand feed it, pill side up

Selford · 01/10/2022 22:13

I used to wrap the tablet in ham/cheese/pate, and then give it to our dog in the park when there were other dogs around - she wasn't going to risk other dogs getting her treats. Obviously the other dogs need not to be so close that if your dog does decide to spit it out they could grab it, and it will only work with a dog which is possessive.

Those pics remind me of trying to give my cat any medication. She was like your dog OP. I just had to sit on the sofa and think about doing it and she'd be off upstairs under the bed. I never understood how she could read my mind. Thankfully ddog is a bit more clueless

RandomMess · 02/10/2022 07:48

We have DH holding the dog whilst I prise her mouth open, Chuck it in, clamp her mouth shut then DH strikes her throat until she swallows it.

DDog is utterly pathetic and acts like she's been tortured the whole time then once it's over and gets a treat is all happy and waggy tailed 🤷🏽‍♀️

We tried every food etc but she's just too neurotic despite being highly food motivated.

comfortablyfrumpy · 02/10/2022 08:02

Ham or pate usually. She us a tablet spotter but it works most of the time.

DDog was recently on a cocktail of tablets and I bought a pack of Iams "Pill Assist" from the vet. Was a bit sceptical but they worked beautifully .

They are little cup shaped squidgy treats that you squidge round the tablet, so the tablet is totally enclosed.

bluetongue · 02/10/2022 09:41

For worming I use the chewable treats. Was skeptical but my dog actually loves them.

harriethoyle · 02/10/2022 09:45

Another vote for pate. My extremely eccentric late Springer had to have his tablets on a postage stamp sized square of bread, enveloped in pate. He also refused to eat his kibble unless it was in a china bowl with a little bit of chopped brie on top 😆😆🙈🙈

LakeFlyPie · 02/10/2022 22:56

Dr Barkers pill pals; I get them from B+M. Sounds like they're the same as the Iams pill assist squidgy things upthread. Work a treat for our Ddog. We pinch a few bits off so he gets a taste for it and then wrap the tablet in a big bit which he wolfs down without it touching the sides. Works every time

Hillcrest2022 · 10/10/2022 23:02

Break it in 2 pieces and cover it in liver paste.
