Budget Dog Food

OddSocksandRainbowDocs · 15/07/2022 21:00

Can anybody recommend a budget dog food? Our lab is currently on Wainwrights but with the cost of everything going up, I was wondering if there was anything cheaper. We've cut back on everything we possibly can - including our own food - so this is a very last resort.

My lab eats Crave. She turned her nose up at Millies Wolfheart, Skinners etc. Yes I have a fussy lab! Lol

Auntieobem · 15/07/2022 22:12

Our boxer is on scrumbles salmon kibble with pretty much any chicken free wet food (just a wee bit) on top. We get it on amazon subscription so it's a bit cheaper.

Mine is also on Tesco own brand biscuits with a tin of sardines mashed in each time. He’s far happier than he was on expensive tails trays.

OddSocksandRainbowDocs · 15/07/2022 22:13

@Bessica Do fussy labs exist?! Mine eats anything and everything Grin

@User952539 Thankyou! :) How often do you feed yours? Our lab is fed a cup full of dry food twice a day. Would I give a tin of sardines for each meal?

I found a local farm that do their own variety of dog and other animal feeds.

A large 15kg bag of kibble is about £16 and I also give my dogs the cores from apples, carrot peelings, any safe left over bits and of late, some wet food too to make it more interesting.
One had to be pts recently but he was 15 and still generally healthy until old age crept up.

Good luck!

Mariposa80 · 15/07/2022 22:19

Yes, fussy labs exist. I have one too 😃

A tin of sardines everyday would blow your budget. Way more expensive than dog food.

@DontBuyANewMumCashmere Sorry to hear about your dog :( Ours loves a carrot. It's his favourite thing! :)

Have you looked at Langhams which is Aldi own brand, looks similar to Wainwrights.
The kennels that my rescue dog came from fed Dr Johns Titanium.
I add sardines to my dogs kibble too, I reduce the amount of kibble he should have and mash the sardines in (either in tomato sauce or oil-although I drain the oil off) .

alloutofcareunits · 15/07/2022 22:20

I notice you mentioned Asda dry food, we fed our retriever on that and she was in perfect health until she died at almost 13. Our current dogs are fed on Butchers and Beta dry food with no problems

TheCaddieisaBaddie · 15/07/2022 22:21

Springer spaniel here who is on Wagg, she has a very sensitive tummy as well. £11 for 12kg sack in tesco's. She has 2 cupful a day and it lasts about 2 wks

A tin of sardines is 35p

I have a rough collie. He has a cup of kibble with the sardines twice a day. I’m not sure what budget you’re trying to get to but that only costs about a pound a day.

@alloutofcareunits That is reassuring. Thankyou Smile With ASDA or another alternative brand, he'd also get more toys to replace the many toys he has destroyed.

@User952539 Given the op is saying wainwright's is too expensive at prob 87p a day then 35p a day is a huge amount of her budget.

User952539 · 15/07/2022 22:33

ah ok no problem, I’ve never worked out the cost of the dry food per day

SparePantsAndLego · 15/07/2022 22:44

I don’t know where you get your dog food but we find we save by bulk buying from ZooPlus. We feed ours Markus Muehle and we need to feed her about 15% less than the feeding guide to maintain her weight.
it’s excellent (87% on all about dog food: www.allaboutdogfood.co.uk/dog-food-reviews/0341/markus-muehle-natural-dog-food)

and extremely good value but don’t know how it compares to what you’re currently feeding.

I think if youre on a budget and your dog will eat anything, then get the VAT free working dog food. Its perfectly ok, especially for an otherwise healthy dog and especially if its topped up with real veg etc

TemperTrap · 16/07/2022 11:39

I've seen some recommendations for Wagg and am really surprised because I think it's awful, crap food. Our vet likened it to feeding your child McDonalds daily.

Ours was on Wagg puppy when we got them and their poo was awful, their breath stank and they weren't really interested in their food at all.

OddSocksandRainbowDocs · 16/07/2022 14:26

Thankyou everybody for all of your suggestions. I'll admit, I was slightly nervous posting because a lot of posters usually pile on, saying raw is best etc so thankyou for not being like that! Smile

We've bought some ASDA's own dry food to try. Smile

We feed Chudleys at the moment and get it from a great pet food warehouse which seems to be cheaper than anywhere else.

My last dog lived until he was 19 and could only stomach Aldi dried food. Served him well!

The good thing about supermarket food is that you can buy a smaller bag to make sure they like it before investing. Mind you, you are a lab parent so...

OddSocksandRainbowDocs · 16/07/2022 21:39

@Facefortheradio We're obviously gradually weaning him so did 3:4 of Wainwrights first and 1:4 of the ASDA food seperately but straight after, if that makes sense. He loved it! Smile

I just took some photos of the prices of the dry food at Costco today.

I'm on the app so I don't know if it's still glitchy but I'll post them anyway.
