Are there any commands your dog really dislikes having to do?

Just curious really, it makes me laugh...I'm not talking about the important ones like stay/come/down (although maybe your dog does hate recall!)...Mine always used to hate lie down and he really disliked being asked to roll over.

He was pretty good so we let him off but the frustrated bottom wiggle always made me giggle.

Yes he's an absolute bell end about drop-it

Cameronnorrieisabitofalright · 15/07/2022 17:34

Our older ddog hates sitting because she is so skinny I think it is uncomfortable..

SirChenjins · 15/07/2022 17:37

Drop it - esp if there’s horse poo involved or a scabby old ball he’s found on a walk

Get off the bed - he’s a magnet during the day, I’m now putting my foot down about sharing a bed with a cockapoo

Abra1d1 · 15/07/2022 17:40

She regards all commands as interchangeable. Sit. Lie. Paw. Touch. She’ll do one of them and look narky if you push for the right one.

she is 12 😆

She’s pretty good on the whole so I cut her some slack.

007DoubleOSeven · 15/07/2022 17:44

@Abra1d1 😆 my old boy used to do that if being pressed to lie down, he'd offer up everything else instead!

This! We used to take two balls to play fetch as he would drop one to chase the second, but then he figured out how to fit two tennis balls in his mouth.

As if you’re being so over-fussy!

TheDogsMother · 15/07/2022 17:55

In the case of our dear departed Jack Russell he didn't like doing any commands. If we had something he really wanted he would perform his extremely limited repertoire Grin

sewinginmyfreetime · 15/07/2022 18:23

My Saluki Lurcher is not a fan of sit, we don’t generally ask him for it anyway as it is not a useful behaviour, but he will offer his very best attentive sit if someone has toast 😂

NeverHadABetterBitOfButter · 15/07/2022 18:44

My WCS won't sit in the rain as he doesn't like a wet bottom so he sits but hovers his bum above the ground Grin

He also hates 'down' - he gives you a very special 'fuck you' look if you ask that one!

Oh mine is the same with sit irrespective of weather. The only time his bottom is plonked on the floor is when he might be getting a bit of sausage as a treat (spoilt dog).

And as for down he does do it but in an undignified manner and falls to the floor dramatically.

torfa · 15/07/2022 18:54

He has a proper diva strop every evening about being sent to his bed while we're eating.
"Bed"
~ignores~
"Bed"
~ignores~ (steadfastly looking elsewhere so he can pretend we're not there)
"Bed"
~eventually goes with complaining whimper~
He lies there with his front legs fully out of the bed to prove a point and if he can (I.e. whenever we're not looking), he starts slowly crawling out commando style.

It's hard to keep a straight face tbh Grin

plinkplinkfizzer · 15/07/2022 19:19

I've had a couple of dogs that would occasionally grumble about being sent to bed ( grumbling loudly followed by huffy sigh )🙄

We had to do the 2 ball technique with our previous labrador. Then she figured out to carry 3 balls in her mouth!! Grin

Current lurcher hates 'sit' as our floors are slippy tiles and his front paws slip forward and I think it hurts his armpits a bit.

devildeepbluesea · 15/07/2022 19:29

My beautiful much-missed Jack Russell girl would hate doing any commands. She knew full well how to do them (would do it perfectly if bribed) but when just asked, she’d look at you and you’d just know she was thinking, “But I don’t fancy doing that. So get stuffed Mum.”

Stellaris22 · 15/07/2022 19:29

Most things! She’s a basset hound so she’ll look at you as though she has no clue what you want her to do, get a treat out and it’s like she goes ‘ohhh, you want me to sit, why didn’t you say so?’. Typical hound with a ‘what’s in it for me’ attitude.

Aria20 · 15/07/2022 21:00

@torfa that's hilarious I can fully picture that sneaky crawl out of bed.

EdithStourton · 15/07/2022 22:00

The stop whistle if actively chasing.

The younger one still thinks that she can ignore it. The older one comes to a regretful halt, and then remembers that if she comes back to me I will pump her full of treats and dish out lashings of praise, so suddenly cheers up. This is an improvement on last winter when she just gave me the finger and carried on running.

ChuckBerrysBoots · 15/07/2022 22:04

Similar to torfa, if sent to bed ours will put the tiniest part of her body possible on the bed as if to say “we’ll, you didn’t say how much of me had to be in bed!”

Your post has made me cry 😢 My beautiful JRT absolutely ignored any commands but was the best dog ever 💕

GuyFawkesDay · 15/07/2022 22:09

"bring it" or "drop" with some form of contraband in the mouth.

Spaniel ...he lives to carry stuff around. It's just he chooses not to carry the squillions of toys he had an instead go for socks/shoes/remote control.

Jalisco · 15/07/2022 22:11

Recall. But only at the end of his walk. He it astonishing how many things he has forgotten to sniff/ pee over, and how VERY, VERY, VERY slowly he can move for a dog in his prime, or how many routes there could be between where he is and where he needs to be. And that is after 90 - 120 minutes of running, frisbee, fetch .... I'd hate to see what he'd be like if he got the walks some dogs I see get!

TheDogsMother · 15/07/2022 22:49

@Ohmydayssilleople Oh me too. Our boy was PTS at the beginning of lockdown and I still well up now. He really was rubbish when it came to the behavioural stuff but he was so funny and we loved him to bits. I've quoted this before but a very wise person told me when our JR was just a pup 'you will never train him, you will just come to an understanding'

Absolutely love that …we definitely had an understanding with my gorgeous doggie. Have now got another JRT / Parsons and she is exactly the same…absolutely no flies on her 💕Shall show your quote to my family.X

Golden retriever will only come back very slowly and after he has thoroughly checked for anything exciting that he might miss if he chooses to return to us 🙄. We have mostly got around it by getting him to sit and wait for us instead - he does this impeccably - but doesn’t work in all situations, so have to be careful. His strong preference is to be chased if he has a ball in his mouth, but he will reluctantly bring it back if he realises that the game is over if he doesn’t.

The black lab is still learning but heel on the lead is trickiest at the monument (he is much better off it).
