Where does your dog sleep on holiday?

Where does your dog sleep when you take it away?
I'm talking about self catering mainly but interested in general!
And do you leave it alone for short periods? If so where/how?
Ours has ditched the crate just in time for holidays...
She's a bit of a chewer...!

Ours is the easiest dog in the world and never chews, howls or barks and sleeps as soon as we go put. He just sleeps on the floor in the bedroom on a towel. Sorry, not the most helpful of responses!

SomeLikeItWarm · 05/07/2022 07:35

Ours sleeps in bed with us wherever we go, not a chewer though.

whenwillthemadnessend · 05/07/2022 07:36

We take his bed and he sleeps downstairs like normal.

Not a chewer or barker.

Girlintheframe · 05/07/2022 07:39

We take his bed with us and depending on where we go he sleeps in our room/ in the hall. Ours however is not a chewer.

We don't leave him alone and only do dog friendly activities when away.

Spidey66 · 05/07/2022 07:50

We don't bring her bed as it takes up too much room. We take her blanket and cushion so she's got a familiar smell, and put it wherever she's allowed or comfy. We've just come back from holiday in Ireland and stayed in dog friendly SC. She slept on a sofa in the bedroom.

She's not a barker or a chewer and is OK for a couple of hours on her own. We usually took her with us to eat in pubs but did leave her alone twice with the radio on and she was fine as we knew she would be. :)

Yamyam13 · 05/07/2022 07:51

We're going to the beach, dog friendly beaches, but its looking like its going to be hot so i dont want her staying on the beach all day and would like her to be able to come back to accommodation to rest and stay cool... in ideal world
If we could leave her (she's happy being left at home for a few hours when exhausted) and then pop back to the beach ourselves then that would be great but it really depends on the set up there.. hoping the kitchen has a door and we can make it safe.
I'm guessing at night its going to ne easiest if she sleeps up in our room... i hope we dont start a new habit though!

You will need to check terms and conditions of you holiday let. Normally they say don’t leave dog unattended.

It's an air bnb.. i will check. I wpuld expect it to be honest, it's totally understandable!

Me and DH will just have to tag team beach fun with the DC i suspect - nice cool quiet naps for one of us is quite appealing tbh!

We take the crate ..ours is still a bit of a risk and wouldn't want to risk it in a holiday place.....most ive stayed in dont let you leave the dog unattended either..

The plan had been to take the crate until a recent week wirh a cone & heat waves meant we let her sleep in the living room loose.. she wont go back now and if she did we'd need to upgrade to an XL which wont fit in the car!

I've never stayed in a holiday let, hotel or anything that allowed you to leave your dog unattended!

I suspect, as you say, that you'll need to tag team and have someone bring the dog back to the cottage for a while.

My only concern would be if you're somewhere with a busy beach and have to leave midway through the day, are you going to be able to get back with the car to pick the others up? Will there even be parking or will you be stuck in traffic for ages just getting anywhere?

PritiPatelsMaker · 05/07/2022 08:34

So glad you asked this. We're looking at booking an Airbnb for next Easter.

I probably wouldn't have left DDog on her own but was unaware of the rule.

Yamyam13 · 05/07/2022 08:34

It's all walking distance! We're 10 mins walk from the beach thankfully

But good point for future reference!

Oh that's okay then Grin

Have a great time! Our dog loves going on holiday!

LynneBenfield · 05/07/2022 08:41

I wouldn’t leave a chewer unattended.

Whenever we’ve taken ours on dog friendly holidays, we’ve taken our own sofa covering throws for their furniture and a stairgate unless one is provided. He’s then slept in the sofa as he doesn’t sleep in a dog bed at home and wouldn’t know what do with one on holiday.

LynneBenfield · 05/07/2022 08:43

(Mine isn’t a chewer but is a hairy fkr)

afaloren · 05/07/2022 09:06

I’m lucky, my dog loves his crate. We have a collapsible soft one for travel.

tizwozliz · 05/07/2022 09:10

Our dog sleeps in with us, same as at home. It means a lot of research when booking places to stay as lots have a no dogs in the bedroom/on the furniture rule. We're happy to take our own sofa covers and bedding.

Nowhere we've stayed have allowed dogs to be left unattended.

Our pup is too exhausted on holiday to get into mischief chewing generally.

Spidey66 · 05/07/2022 13:53

Tbh we’ve just been on holiday to self catering and while we weren’t supposed to leave her, we did, though only 2 times for about 2 hours to go to a restaurant. We kept her in the kitchen so didn’t get into the bed. We know from experience that for that length of time, she’s absolutely fine and she’s not one for barking and chewing if left alone (or at all for that matter).

Spanielsarepainless · 05/07/2022 20:45

We are on holiday at the moment. Adult is snoozing on a large Polypad, puppy at my feet but is in a crate overnight. We have never stayed anywhere that insisted we couldn't leave our dogs alone though. Mainly Cornwall and Norfolk. We must have been lucky so far.

Helenloveslee4eva · 05/07/2022 22:58

We take our own duvet and he sleeps on top like at home. Only book dog friends but have a bag of cheap fleece throws we put on anything anyway.
and never leave him alone - we really wouldn’t leave him in another room when we are there - not that he chews or anything but I’d not put it past him to turn out a waste paper bin if previous occupant had crisp crumbs or what ever in it etc

mdinbc · 05/07/2022 23:19

I called the dog friendly hotel that we have booked and asked about if we were allowed to leave the dog in the room while we had dinner. They had no issue with that, as long as she didn't bark. Ours is quiet, and we will make sure to give her a good walk to tire her out, as well as a chewy treat when we leave her.

We bring her pillow with us, she sleeps on that.

MissMarpleRocks · 06/07/2022 07:15

She sleeps in our room on her blanket or our bed when we are away. We used to take her bed but she didn’t like it for some reason. We look for dog friendly restaurants as I don’t think fair to leave her in an unfamiliar place- she’s a rescue so can get a bit stressed in a new environment.

Lightningrain · 06/07/2022 07:20

We take a crate and ours sleeps downstairs as she does at home. We don’t shut the door anymore but the option is there if she won’t settle for any reason.

She’s not a chewer but we’d never leave her alone in holiday accommodation. All the ones we eve been to have stated it’s not allowed in the T&Cs anyway so it’s not worth the risk.
