Where does your dog sleep on holiday?

Where does your dog sleep when you take it away?
I'm talking about self catering mainly but interested in general!
And do you leave it alone for short periods? If so where/how?
Ours has ditched the crate just in time for holidays...
She's a bit of a chewer...!

We stayed in a holiday cottage over half term. The first night doggo slept happily enough in the kitchen, but then my mum managed to drop a bottle of wine which shattered loudly and dramatically on the kitchen floor and the dog refused to come back into that room for the rest of the week. Had to feed her in the bathroom and she ended up sleeping on our bed. DH was worried she would then want to sleep on our bed at home but once we were back she settled into her normal routine. We just put a throw over the bed covers to protect them.

You can't leave a chewer unattended I'm afraid. Either reinstate the crate for the holiday or keep her with you at all times.

We've never had a chewer but have taken several dogs on holiday. One of them who was very settled slept downstairs in her bed with no issues. The next one slept fine in her crate downstairs, and the next one slept on her bed in our room as she cried downstairs.

It all depends on the dog, but you can't risk them chewing other people's furniture and neither should you let them sleep on the sofa/bed.

Winederlust · 06/07/2022 09:04

Ours tends to alternate between our bed and the sofa on holidays so we just bring blankets etc to cover the furniture.
He's fine to be left alone for a few hours at home but I wouldn't be comfortable doing that on holiday even if it was allowed. You don't know how they're going to react in a strange environment, and i don't think it's fair when you've brought them all that way just to then leave them!
I'd possibly consider it in a hotel when going down for breakfast and he's probably still asleep but not otherwise.

mumto2teenagers · 06/07/2022 09:09

We only book places were dogs are allowed on the sofa, we just take a throw to use. Normally not allowed to leave dogs unattended, we usually research the area before we go to find dog friendly pubs and cafes so we can still eat out.

Mine sleeps in my bed but you have to check as lots of places don't let dogs upstairs/on furniture which wouldn't work for us. I wouldn't really worry about where I'd leave her - probably dependant on individual accommodation layout and rules but if wouldn't matter as she doesn't chew. I'd be nervous with a chewer staying anywhere that wasn't mine tbh 😬.

For the beach, we take a cooling pad and a mini tent… and lots of water, obviously.

He sleeps on his blanket, on the bed with us (but he does at home too). He doesn’t shed.

We’ve just been touring around Europe with him, and most places are dog friendly, so no need to leave him, but we found that a lot of beaches weren’t, so had to seek out dog beaches.

When we went to the pool, we’d leave him in the bathroom with his blanket, water and a treat. On one occasion, he was barking as we got back though.

paddingtonstares · 06/07/2022 09:19

We have a touring caravan, she sleeps on the sofa at the front of the van, having started off on the floor next to us. She sneaks down to the sofa when we are asleep 😂

Ours sleep in a crate in the kitchen on holiday.

Sgtmajormummy · 06/07/2022 09:33

Ours sleeps under the kitchen table whenever we go to our 2nd house, on a folded up duvet in its cover that we keep for the job. It means he gets the crate feeling without bringing it.
Separation anxiety so there’s always someone with him.
We’re planning on doing the same when we go on holiday, so just the duvet and a cooling pad on the back seat and in the house.Maybe a cooling collar for days out,
He really suffers the heat and we got him a paddling pool last year that he never looked at- we’ll be trying again this year!

We would definitely take her bed, and lots of covers for any furniture, as we have at home. We might even take our sprung stair gate. She isnt allowed upstairs at home, so she has never been on our bed. If they don't allow dogs upstairs, I guess one of us will have to sleep downstairs with her, unless we can find an area or room she can safely stay overnight in, again, we'll have puppy cam.
If we were ever to leave her, if allowed to, we would do as we always do at home: in a safe enclosed room, only ever after a good walk & play, always with a kong, and with the puppy cam on so we can keep an eye. And never for longer than an hour or so. She usually just sleeps if she's tired enough & she is not a barker thankfully. But I think we just wont leave her tbh, I'm not comfortable with it in someone else's property, unless they approve.

My dog is older, calm and not a chewer however we'd never leave him alone in holiday accommodation.

When ddog was younger (and we had 2) we would take a crate but now ddog sleeps on the bed with us.

Have a look at cafes and restaurants near where you'll be. We found a lot of dog friendly ones over the last few holidays we've been on (Dorset, Cornwall, Devon, Welsh coast, Scottish coast) that were happy to provide a shaded table, dog bowls (and occasional treats) while we took our time having a drink or ice cream and that was all the break ddog needed.

Also, make sure you take a blanket with you wherever you go so dog has something nice to lie on under tables etc.

YanTanTetheraPetheraPimp · 06/07/2022 11:53

I take old king size flat sheets to cover sofas etc, she sleeps on her bed either downstairs or in our room (I cover the bed with another sheet, just in case). She’s remarkably relaxed for an 18 month old rescue; so long as we’re there (or one of us) she’s fine- we’ve been away twice in the last year.

YanTanTetheraPetheraPimp · 06/07/2022 11:54

Oh, we don’t leave her alone in the holiday accommodation and I take a fleece blanket to pubs, cafes etc.

SamphirethePogoingStickerist · 06/07/2022 11:56

Another who takes the crate with them. Means he gets his usual routine and we can relax a little.

Littlebirdyouaresosweet · 06/07/2022 12:01

Our ddogs have Holiday Attire. Beds, blankets, beach towels, and a beach tent!!
Yabu not to cater for your ddogs every whim op...
Don't forget a long line. Imo however good ddog's recall is. We shoved them under a huge rock.
