Cat got into our house

NC for this, not really sure of purpose of post, just need to offload.

Neighbours new cat got into our house today and our greyhound has scratched or bit it whilst we were out. Our front window was like a bloodbath and when we pulled up, the cat was sitting on the windowsill inside. Looked ten times worse than it was, I though cat was dead.

Cat has since been returned to next door and is okay bar the small wound, skin hadn't been pierced from what my partner and neighbour could see. Looked worse too as cat is white. They are taking it to vet tomorrow incase needs stitched or antibiotics, partner offered us to contribute to cost if needed as cat not insured. Our friend whose a vet said it should be okay too. Neighbour was fine about situation thankfully. Seems the cat doesn't normally get out went out bedroom window and has then in turn went into our window and chaos obviously ensued. They did say they could hear commotion but then went quiet...thinking cat had been killed.

I'm now panicking about our dog. He was not a raced greyhound and we got him at a year and a half old. He is great with kids and other small dogs, only experience of cats is whilst on his lead on walks. I'm just so worried incase something like this happens again and we then get reported as bad owners/him as a dangerous dog.
I feel so upset and like the worst dog owner in the world even though we wouldn't have been able to prevent it anyway.

Partner says not to get worried over it or upset as lots dogs would react the same if a cat entered their home...yes this might be true but doesn't change what's happened.

Our neighbour's cat got into my house. I told the neighbour he was lucky not to get it returned in a Sainsburys bag with half its legs missing. His cat shouldn't be in my house. If it comes, it takes the consequences. Full stop.

And I am still on excellent terms with the neighbour!

Lalosalamanca · 03/07/2022 19:33

Greyhound acted totally reasonably. He didn't do anything wrong and neither did you. I think it was generous to offer to contribute to vet bills. I would not of done if I was in your shoes. The cat entered your property it wasn't as if you had your dog off lead outside and he went on to maul the cat. Cat is really lucky to be alive.
I think in the nicest way possible, you need to get a grip.

Sunshineandrainbow · 03/07/2022 19:33

Thing is you don't know what happened before this. Was cat going for your dog and dog retalerated?

I take it cat was unscathed?
Glad you also have an understanding neighbour!

I thought this too, I'm surprised he wasn't scratched to pieces as is a wimp at the best of times, though the cat is only a young and timid (or so it seems) so not as hardfaced as the neighbour Toms!

I'm puzzled. Where did all the blood come from? Glad both cat and greyhound are ok. Not anyone's fault.

Point noted re getting a grip..partner has also told me to wise up and get over it... I'm just a sensitive soul when it comes to animals and a worrier by nature!😂

How did it get in?

I understand why you’re upset, but the cat was in your house. And your dog didn’t really hurt it.

Lalosalamanca · 03/07/2022 19:42

Bless your heart ❤

The cat has a small cut on its chest, not sure how there was that amount of blood in comparison to the cut.
I think it looked worse as cat had obviously been running mad to escape dog in a panic...Akin to when you get a shaving cut or bad papercut!

My neighbour was looking after a greyhound when it saw my cat, slipped its lead and got him.

cat ran off, neighbours searched but couldn’t find him, so I came home from work to find a very apologetic note with an offer to pay vets fees.

tbh the apology and offer was all it needed. Animals fight, the cat has has worse injuries fighting squirrels.

cat was fine as it happened.

UrsulaPandress · 03/07/2022 19:44

Totally not your fault and you shouldn’t be offering to pay anything.

Neighbour should be apologising to you.

Through our upstairs window! We both have ground floor extensions so out of theirs onto the roof and back up into ours!!

Your partner is absolutely right. People keep cats and expect them to be able to have a right to roam. The consequence of that is that they are at risk of death or injury. I have had a dog who was attacked by a cat in my garden and ended up at the vet with infected wounds. I drove it off with a stick and subsequently used a hose to discourage it. My last dogs who are now dead (old age) would have killed a cat if it entered my garden. It wouldn't have been the dogs' fault or mine. I don't dislike cats at all but if they are going to roam into other people's gardens and houses then its going to happen and its not the fault of the dog or the dog owner.

It probably wont make the same mistake again!

TheHorrorOfIt · 03/07/2022 19:52

Have you actually checked over your dog OP? It is possible (given the blood) that the cat has bitten or scratched, and cat bites are very prone to bad infection because they are typically deep due to the shape of the teeth and jaw. I don’t see how you are at fault when your dog fought with a wild animal (as cats are deemed in law*) that got into its own home.

*NB I am a cat owner but do acknowledge the risk they are at when out and about; it is just one of those things you have to factor in to your way of looking after them

SpaghettiSquash · 03/07/2022 19:53

I quite understand your fear. I have a greyhound and worry about cats coming in to the garden when my dog is out.

Your dog only did what's natural to it and the cat is lucky it got off so lightly. If a cat came in my house my dog would kill it. Your dog was in his own home and can't be held to blame. If you make sure to always muzzle your dog when out and only let off the lead in a secure area then your dog will be under control and not at fault if there are any future incidents.

tabulahrasa · 03/07/2022 20:24

I have a cat, who goes out, next door has two dogs one of which would catch her if he could (they’re rescued ex hunting dogs)

My cat is dog savvy and just avoids her garden, but if anything ever happened it wouldn’t be my neighbours fault or her dogs... just one of the risks of having a cat that goes outside, like traffic or foxes.

stillherenow · 03/07/2022 20:31

I have a greyhound who would certainly kill a cat but I wouldn't be offering to contribute for vet bills for an attack in my garden or house .

Wolfiefan · 03/07/2022 20:38

Don’t go out and leave windows open again.
I would want to get the cat checked out ASAP if it was mine. Is the dog unscathed?

Floralnomad · 03/07/2022 20:43

If a cat got into my house it wouldn’t get out alive and our dog is lovely - he just doesn’t like cats or foxes / squirrels / rabbits / birds , you get the picture . I wouldn’t have offered to help with the vet bill either it’s entirely the neighbours issue .

Roodog · 03/07/2022 21:22

I think cat was lucky. Do get the dog checked too, as pp said, cat scratches and bites can be very nasty even if they look OK. If the cat gets in to your house or garden, it's not your fault or that of your dog if it gets hurt. Our grey would go for it and I doubt he'd let go. He has v high prey drive and we try our best to take that in to account. But a cat that gets into the house is not something you would expect. Sounds like everyone's got away with it. Definitely not your fault, but understandable you feel awful.

WinterMusings · 03/07/2022 21:32

If a cat can get in, so can a burglar. I wouldn't be telling to dog off!

your neighbour has chosen not to have their car insured, that's on them

their cat came into your house, it's just one of those things. If it has ANY sense it won't do it again!

Newfluff · 03/07/2022 21:37

My non prey drive dog that lives in harmony with my cat, rabbits, chickens would attack any other animal that entered our home.

If the greyhound wanted to kill it he would have on first bite.

userxx · 03/07/2022 21:54

I know of a greyhound who disembowelled a cat. Your neighbours cat was very lucky.
