Cat got into our house

NC for this, not really sure of purpose of post, just need to offload.

Neighbours new cat got into our house today and our greyhound has scratched or bit it whilst we were out. Our front window was like a bloodbath and when we pulled up, the cat was sitting on the windowsill inside. Looked ten times worse than it was, I though cat was dead.

Cat has since been returned to next door and is okay bar the small wound, skin hadn't been pierced from what my partner and neighbour could see. Looked worse too as cat is white. They are taking it to vet tomorrow incase needs stitched or antibiotics, partner offered us to contribute to cost if needed as cat not insured. Our friend whose a vet said it should be okay too. Neighbour was fine about situation thankfully. Seems the cat doesn't normally get out went out bedroom window and has then in turn went into our window and chaos obviously ensued. They did say they could hear commotion but then went quiet...thinking cat had been killed.

I'm now panicking about our dog. He was not a raced greyhound and we got him at a year and a half old. He is great with kids and other small dogs, only experience of cats is whilst on his lead on walks. I'm just so worried incase something like this happens again and we then get reported as bad owners/him as a dangerous dog.
I feel so upset and like the worst dog owner in the world even though we wouldn't have been able to prevent it anyway.

Partner says not to get worried over it or upset as lots dogs would react the same if a cat entered their home...yes this might be true but doesn't change what's happened.

I wouldn’t be paying any of their vets fees to be honest.
they don’t have insurance-which is entirely their problem.

coffeecupsandfairylights · 04/07/2022 05:54

If the greyhound wanted to kill the car, it would have done so in seconds.

I wouldn't be paying any vets bills either. If they choose not to insure their cat, that's on them, but the cat came into your dogs' home and caused this situation - it's not your fault in the slightest.

My own dog lives with three cats but would no doubt chase and possibly bite/hurt an intruder cat. That's just what dogs do - nothing to feel bad about Smile

driedgrassinavase · 04/07/2022 05:59

I wouldn’t be worry about it the cat shouldn’t have been in your house. Hopefully it learns it’s lesson.

Whitney168 · 05/07/2022 12:43

Am amazed you offered to share costs, absolutely no fault on your end. Hopefully the cat has learned its lesson and won't come again, but onus is on your neighbour to keep it safe, not you!

Don’t go out and leave windows open again.
I would want to get the cat checked out ASAP if it was mine. Is the dog unscathed?

What utter nonsense!

Cats are free roaming and can't be controlled.

If the cat is stupid enough to go into a strange house then it's not the OPs fault.

It's the cat owners job to protect it, not a neighbouring dog owner

Wolfiefan · 05/07/2022 20:57

@neurodiversityrules I wouldn’t leave windows open when I left the house from a security point of view. I definitely would never leave windows open if I thought a cat could come in and be killed by my dog. Imagine coming home to that and having to inform the owners. Why take the risk?

Newfluff · 05/07/2022 22:27

Wolfie I wouldn't keep my windows shut on the what if a cat came through the window and was killed.

It is nor op or ops dogs fault if kitty comes in.

Exactly!

Wolfiefan · 06/07/2022 13:43

So you’re happy to chance it and come home to bits of cat scattered round your house? And having to return those bits to an owner?
I wouldn’t.

Newfluff · 06/07/2022 14:24

I would get the owner to clean it up.

I'm not heartless but it is completely impractical to think that I need to shut my windows to keep someone else's cat out. Would you shut them all the time because if I was in the kitchen I wouldn't know if kitty had come in through the window until I heard the dog bark, which would be too late.

EveryFlightBeginsWithAFall · 06/07/2022 14:50

It's very unlikely the cat will do that again!

My next door neighbour had a Northan Inuit and I had 3 cats . It was the most lovely dog, fantastic with my dc and fine with other dogs

Cats would have no chance though! He'd catch wild rabbits and eat them in seconds. They have a huge prey drive. Luckily none of my cats ever went anywhere near next doors garden never mind in the house

Less than a month after the dog died one of my cats walked into his house and stole his just cooked chicken breast though! They aren't daft

It's not your fault, you've apologised

Johnnysgirl · 06/07/2022 14:52

The cat was in your house... the dog's territory 🤷🏻‍♀️

sjxoxo · 06/07/2022 14:59

Your dog behaved pretty normally and I’d be amazed if that could be considered aggressive. I would guess 50% or more dogs would attack or chase another animal that came in their home especially if it was one they aren’t familiar with. Don’t worry. Wasn’t your fault. The cat won’t make the same mistake twice!!! Xx

But by that logic, you can't have the windows open downstairs if you're upstairs in the shower in case a cat comes in 🤷🏻‍♀️

If you let your cat out to roam, you should be aware of the risks. A dog that kills a strange cat that's entered its' house isn't doing anything wrong.

Wolfiefan · 06/07/2022 15:29

I don’t leave windows open when we go out. I never leave windows open where my dogs are unless I’m with them. I chose to have sighthounds and the idea of them killing a cat because I left all the windows open is awful.

neurodiversityrules · 06/07/2022 23:31

I also have a sighthound, fortunately no prey drive and scared of cats. Even so, whether I open my windows or not has nothing to do with the neighbours cats

SirVixofVixHall · 06/07/2022 23:39

I am confused by “skin hadn’t been pierced” ? Obviously it had been , or there wouldn’t have been a “ bloodbath” .
Bites of all kinds tend to go septic so they do need to get the cat seen by a vet.
Not your fault though in your place I probably would pay a bit of the vet bill.

Fluffycloudland77 · 07/07/2022 17:02

I’m a cat owner, they do the stupidest things. You can get flat cat screens for about £30 a window that stop cats getting in/out. It stops flies coming in too.

You could have the window open with no stress then because the cats going to think lightening can’t strike twice. They are optimists.

Newfluff · 07/07/2022 17:49

Then the neighbours can get the screens to keep the cat in. I can't believe people won't leave windows open incase a cat gets in.
