How long would you go away for without your dog?

Assuming both you and your dog are perfectly happy with the care you have arranged for them while you’re away?

DDog is having an overnight boarding trial soon, and I’m considering what degree of freedom it might provide if it goes well…

1 week is the most I could be parted from him now, I miss him too much.

pilates · 23/06/2022 21:28

1 week

Bhu · 23/06/2022 21:30

We’re doing the trial for a trip we’re planning that would be 3 or 4 nights.

Justapiercer · 23/06/2022 21:33

We do 10 nights, prior to that we would usually go away for 14 nights.

He is left with his dogwalker & he gets more spoilt there than with us so he's perfectly happy 😂

If it was a kennel situation 1 night maximum.

Ihatethenewlook · 23/06/2022 21:34

I’ve done 16 days

USaYwHatNow · 23/06/2022 21:37

I have just done 12 nights away from my dog. I had originally planned for her to have a live in dog sitter but due to an emergency they couldn't, so she went to kennels. Cried when I dropped her off, cried when I picked her up. She was beautifully looked after, had a massive field to play in every day and was spoilt rotten. Despite that, I won't be doing it again 😂 and will try my hardest for our dog sitter to be available if there's a next time.

Yodaisawally · 23/06/2022 21:38

Two weeks but he says with my parents

StarDolphins · 23/06/2022 21:42

I personally wouldn’t leave a dog for longer than 5-7 nights. My Mum used to do dog boarding & she said most of the dogs miss/pine for their owners. My dog is always with me & he’s nearly 11 so I never leave him at all now but in the future when he’s sadly gone & I get another one, I will start as I mean to go on & have short breaks away!

rookiemere · 23/06/2022 21:48

We did 3 weeks in NZ but rookiedog got to stay at home with his beloved borrowmydoggy walker so he was very happy.

RedCarsGoFaster · 23/06/2022 21:51

We did 10 nights for our honeymoon, but she stayed with a friend of ours and couldn't have given a toss about us .

We've only had one night away since the second dog arrived - combination of Covid restrictions and petrified Romanian rescue. She loves our neighbour, so we paid him to dogsit both of for that night by sleeping in our house. We can't really ask him to do that for more than about 2 nights in a row - it's a massive imposition on him.

I'm hoping we can find a house and dog sitter and then we can bugger off for a week of peace!

Bhu · 23/06/2022 21:52

I can see it would make a big difference to leave them with someone he had a solid relationship with, like parents or dog walkers.

We recently did 10 nights away from. Dog who is 18 months old. We built up to that though. He went to stay with our brilliant dog sitter. Slept on his bed and had a lovely time being spoilt.

rookiemere · 23/06/2022 21:56

Yes rookiedog either stays at home with borrowmydoggy lady or stays with dog walker which he loves as she has other dogs.

I just looked at kennels the other day as my friend is putting her pup in there when they go away and it's half the price of him going to the dog walkers, but they were kept on the premises all of the time and big dogs separated from little ones and it said they'd mostly be in their solo exercise runs aka cells. Sounded like Guantanemo bay for doggos.
So we'll continue to pay more ( borrowmydoggy lady is free but we pay dog walker for two walks a day when she is there and I get her various food and drink treats plus a present from holiday so it's not cheap).

FlamingGoat · 23/06/2022 22:00

I don't. We converted our van into a camper and take them with us. They love their adventures and actually sulk we go home!

FairyLightPups · 23/06/2022 22:03

We're planning 3 weeks next year and they'll be left with my in-laws but we tend to travel with them instead. Holidays without them are usually only a long weekend, so 3-4 nights.

1 week

I week

Strokethefurrywall · 23/06/2022 22:11

The kids and I are away for the whole of July. The helper will stay with him when DH joins us, then I fly home.

So a month for me and a month for DH.

idiotmagnet · 23/06/2022 22:20

I think it really depends on the dog. Mine doesn't like other dogs so loves the solo runs situation that other dogs would hate. My dog wouldn't care if she never saw another dog ever again! Don't even think she realises she is one tbh. She loves spending time with the kennel owner and other than that she sleeps and goes for a mooch outside when the other dogs are in. I've only ever done 3 nights and I'm building it up. Can't ever see me doing more than a week though. I would just miss her so much.

StiggyZardust · 23/06/2022 22:21

We're going away for 6 weeks. MIL will be having him, he knows her well and will be spoilt rotten!

BluebellField · 23/06/2022 22:23

I love my dog with all my heart but I would definitely go away for several weeks if I wanted to as I know my family would properly look after him.

If he was being looked after by a dog sitter, I would say a week and a half at the most.

2bazookas · 23/06/2022 22:24

Our max was 6 weeks (dog moved in with neighbours she adored and vice versa)
I think the max we ever left them in kennels was a fortnight
and there was another month when we had a housesitter ( a friend we knew and trusted) and several periods when the students sons dog-sat during vacations.
Try different kennels until you find one the dog really enjoys.

SirenSays · 23/06/2022 22:25

6 months max. I travel a lot so we're used to it. Would significantly cut down when the dogs are older. I wish it was easier to take them with me.

SuperlativeOxymoron · 23/06/2022 22:25

We can't do more than 4-6 hours anymore, used to do a week-10 days, but he's almost 18 now, so it's getting to that point that old age could take him anytime. I don't think I could forgive myself if he passed while we were away.
But equally I recognise we're putting a lot of our life on hold for a dog, however, he was our first child and the reason we bought a house, so there's a lot of emotion tied to him.

thefirstmrsrochester · 23/06/2022 22:29

We are going away for two weeks and as much as I will miss my mental lab, he will be living it up at my mum and dads and they love him so very much. It will be like a wee holiday for him as well.

MsMarvellous · 23/06/2022 22:38

We're going away for two and a bit weeks later this year. He's staying home and our friend is staying here. But I'd have out him in our home boarding place without a worry.
