How long would you go away for without your dog?

Assuming both you and your dog are perfectly happy with the care you have arranged for them while you’re away?

DDog is having an overnight boarding trial soon, and I’m considering what degree of freedom it might provide if it goes well…

I’ve had dogs for 20 years, the most I ever left my two JRTs was a week - mainly because I couldn’t afford any longer plus I’d miss them too much.

My current dog is in love with my sisters dog and we are each other’s dog sitters. I managed 14 days in January. He had a whale of a time.

If I didn’t have family to help I’d make sure I built up his kennel stays. My lovely JRTs got completely overexcited when they went to kennels, they would leap out of the car and race down the lines before anyone could escort them.

Stopped going abroad after two attempts with home boarding. More than happy to quit flying about 7 years ago. They come with us, no question.

I'm leaving my dog for two weeks next month to go on holiday. He will be staying with my mum and be spoilt rotten.

I'll miss him like mad though.

Dear dog has just stayed with my Dd while we had a 14 day holiday so she stayed 16 days. Perfectly happy. DD rescued her and doggie has never forgotten. She loves DD even more than she loves us. Gets lots of fuss from DD and family and bosses their Holden retriever about even though she is half his size.Sh has also stayed in kennels once when Dd's family were travelling with us. She was also happy in kennels and had clearly made friends with all the kennel staff when we picked her up but I prefer to leave her with DD.

Mine stays with DF so it would only really be limited by their appetite for it. That said, he comes back fat and disobedient as DF feeds him many treats but point blank refuses to use them as rewards ("he'll come back when I call because he knows he's meant to" 🤦‍♀️) so I'll always have to do some remedial work upon my return.

Longest I've done to date is 3 weeks but I don't have a specific limit in mind. I've probably got to accept that my days of going backpacking for months on end are over, though that's not solely because of DDog

Can I ask how old your dog is OP

We’ve once gone away for two weeks and DDog had a wonderful time with the family he stays with. That’s the longest we’ve left him and I missed him! He was fine though, he has his own holiday with them and their dog.

He’ll be two in September.

There’s such a range. It’s interesting. I guess a lot depends on temperament. I really can’t predict how ddog will be on his trial (still a couple of weeks away). He has had a couple of regular dog walkers and has always adored them so I think he forms attachments to other people pretty quickly!
