Sunbathing dog

DDog loves sunbathing. LOVES it. He is dreadful in the heat with regards to walking, it's a struggle to get him around the block early morning or late at night but he just loves sitting in the sun.

When it gets really hot do you let your dogs sunbathe or bring them in? Inside he is very happy to sleep on the tiled kitchen floor. He's got a cool mat but won't entertain sitting on it.

He an elderly fair haired cairn so I'm worried about sun burn and heat stroke!

I've made him come in now but it was a battle...

Mine is pretty good at self-regulating but if I'm worried I bring him in and make him cool down!

fortifiedwithtea · 15/06/2022 12:07

Ddog is a boxer. She would like to sunbathe in full sun on the patio but we are not letting her.

instead she is flopped out on the sofa, just shared a mini milk ice cream with me as in I gave her the last bit.

Forestdweller11 · 15/06/2022 12:23

We had a heat lover, left him to it largely. What do they say about mad dogs and English men? We did make him come in periodically and restricted him a bit if it was particularly hit, but he had free access shade and water. He was something of a lizard. I think the less hairy breeds probably need sun screen on at least ears. Our current dog also loves the sun but is much more likely to come in/go into the shade once he's got heated up.

halfsiesonapotnoodle · 15/06/2022 13:04

I would say it does need to be limited. Dogs do not necessarily realise when they're too hot and take action. As an ex vet nurse, I've seen many cases of irreversable heatstroke over the years, which in most cases is fatal. It can be avoided by owners being proactive.

Girliefriendlikespuppies · 15/06/2022 13:11

Yeah my dogs the same, he loves the heat.

I bring him in when I think he's had enough (around 10 mins or so on a hot day like today.)

wetotter · 15/06/2022 13:14

I've just brought mine in.

She was quite happily lying in the shade in the garden, but I noticed that her breathing rate was a bit high. So she'll be indoors where it's cooler now (except for toileting) until at least this evening.

She's happily dozing next to me - we had an early morning walk and she doesn't seem to need/want more than the one when it's this hot

majorquimby · 15/06/2022 13:16

ours loves to sunbathe in a particularly sunny bit of the patio, but only for about 10 mins at a time then brings herself indoors or onto a cool shady bit of the grass. we bought a cool mat but she regards it with great suspicion and something to be walked around rather than sat on. i've never thought about sunscreen tbh!

tealandteal · 15/06/2022 13:17

Small DDog is all black and very fond of lying on the patio in full sun. I bring her in after a few minutes as her fur gets hot to the touch and I’m not sure she would ever come on voluntarily.

FrustareNT · 15/06/2022 13:18

I have literally just dragged my JRT in !! She was out on the decking panting but not wanting to actually move !

Purplecatshopaholic · 15/06/2022 13:19

My boy is a Spanish rescue who funnily enough loves the heat. I leave him to choose where he lies down and generally he flits from sunny spot to shady and back again on a whim. He hates going for a walk when its hot too, happy to pootle about the back garden

YanTanTetheraPetheraPimp · 15/06/2022 13:25

My Romanian rescue seems to self-regulate alternating between the baking patio and cool living room. She’s got plenty of choices, from tiled floor to sofa, lawn to carpet.
We walked at 6am, will go out again after 9pm.

SheldonesqueTheBstard · 15/06/2022 13:26

I look after a sensible lizard hound. Lies outside for 5 minutes - gets hot - comes in. Drinks. Naps. Repeats.

The last one used to move round the garden like a sundial. Tail in the sun - rest in the shade. Always checked on though and taken inside if too warm outside.

LadyCatStark · 15/06/2022 13:48

I wish it was hot enough here to need to bring our dog in! 😭😭😭

tizwozliz · 15/06/2022 14:09

My lab seems to be on a 10 minute bake/cool cycle today

Yodaisawally · 15/06/2022 14:10

He's under the trampoline now and happy as Larry so going to leave home be! It's going to be a very late night walk later.

2 of mine love being out in the sun. Usually when the panting starts they come in themselves!
Their first beach holiday!!
Ddog still has her beach towel on post swim!!
*they had a beach tent also to cool off on!!

SheldonesqueTheBstard · 15/06/2022 15:30

😍

HardRockOwl · 15/06/2022 23:48

Elderly cairn terrier? We dog sitting one who's 16. They're bullet proof. Let him do what he wants 😀

No seriously, just bring him in if you're concerned

NotMyCircusNotMyCircus · 15/06/2022 23:54

I let mine self regulate, which applies to everything from sunbathing to eating. As things stand he's not fat and he's not suffered from sunstroke yet. He's not, however, capable of self regulating with games of fetch.

YMMV.

XmasElf10 · 16/06/2022 21:54

I let mine do what he likes. He pootles out and boils himself for 15 mins before shuffling under the trampoline or back in onto the cold wood floor. It’s actually rather chilly indoors so I think he pops out for a warm up. We didn’t walk much today though and he’s very happy to decline a walk if the weather doesn’t suit him (too hot, good wet, too windy, too can’t be arsed).

LynneBenfield · 16/06/2022 22:02

Mine (young, healthy, light coloured, large breed) had,

7:15am walk on grass with access to a stream and no ball chasing,

7:30pm short walk, on grass when it was quite cloudy but still warm but bearable though pavement would’ve been too much (again no ball).

He was allowed in the garden during the day for brief intervals where he played in a paddling pool, in the shade but spent most of the day inside with the blinds down as I made him. He would sleep in the sun most of the time if I left him to it though. He’s not very sensible.

longtompot · 16/06/2022 22:29

Mine (blue roan show cocker) follows me everywhere, so if I am indoors thats where she is and if I am outside ditto. Outside she lies in the sun baking until she decides it's too much and then sleeps in the shade, where if she gets too cold she then goes and lies in the sun. I do have to put a bowl of water outside for her as she just won't go in until I do, so wouldn't have a drink for ages otherwise.
I think she is getting a bit warm in our bedroom, especially last night as she was led right across the door, probably to get any breeze coming in underneath. We do have our windows open all the time but must not be enough for her

One of ours would sunbathe all day if we let her, she is an absolute sun worshipper. I wondered if it was a JRT thing?

stillherenow · 17/06/2022 06:13

My greyhound lies outside until he is panting like a madman and still won't come in. There's no shade in our garden.I have to lay a trail of chicken to get him in and even then it's a struggle . . He's got a bladder of steel so today I'm going to avoid letting him out after 9 up to about 4 unless he specifically asks . Inside he lies all day in front of his tower fan.
