Do dogs recognise each other?

Do you think dogs of the same breed recognise each other and react accordingly? My Springer spaniel always seems extra delighted to meet another springer. He's thrilled to meet any friendly dog but seems to go particularly bananas when it's one of his own kind.

We rarely meet other basset hounds so not sure if she’d react differently to another basset. But ours absolutely recognises her friends and it’s why I love doggy socialising and playing. She even knows where her best doggy pal lives, when we walk past their house she lies down and gets upset she isn’t getting to meet up.

Its such a joyous and wonderful thing to see her recognise her friends and get excited, I love dogs playing and clearly enjoying themselves.

Yup! I have a chocolate & black lab. My chocolate boy LOVES another chocolate lab…doesn’t care for other dogs really 🤣🤣

There was a Finnish Lapphund meet outside my house yesterday and I could tell the dogs were very excited about it 😂

Pointy dog makes a beeline for others.
She also likes spaniels and labradors/ retrievers.
She's scared of chihuahuas and hates anything yappy

Never heard of a Finnish lapphund @Climbingthelaundrymountain. Just had a google. Lovely dogs

Do you think the reason they prefer their own breed is because they have memories of their parents and siblings looking like that so it triggers something

Narwhalelife · 26/06/2022 19:19

@Jenasaurus possibly, but we know my choc lab’s brother and they have never got on! Either ignore each other or can become quite spicy play fighting.

My 2 labs have reverently made friends with my friends 2 pointers and they come round a lot, and now all I have to say is ‘the pointers are coming’ and my two both run to the back gate and are very excited 🥰

*got to have some joy with the world how it is currently

Our black Labrador can not only recognise other labradors but he can recognise individual ones even though they’re very similar. When he met a dog from gun dog training on a walk recently, he immediately sat down as he knows he has to do a lot of sitting at gun dog training 😂. He also has a friend from our walks that he saw at an event and made a beeline for despite there being lots of other dogs.

I love the idea of this, DDog is a scruffy mongrel and he definitely makes a beeline for certain dogs and totally ignores others.

My cocker loves all spaniels and labs too but avoids husky types and hates dachshunds (no idea why). He also has a brother nearby and we’ve bumped into him a few times - they definitely recognise each other.

NeedAHoliday2021 · 27/06/2022 22:13

Oh and a neighbour nearby has a massive white dog (no idea what bread but he’s a huge sobering ugly boy who ignores all dogs that walk by when he’s in the front garden but my spaniel adores him and he loves my spaniel too. They have a lovely friendship! Big dog is old and has had many operations so can’t play so my 2 year old high energy spaniel says hello and lays with him.
