Do dogs recognise each other?

Do you think dogs of the same breed recognise each other and react accordingly? My Springer spaniel always seems extra delighted to meet another springer. He's thrilled to meet any friendly dog but seems to go particularly bananas when it's one of his own kind.

My terrier likes spaniels and whippets.

My whippets always want to say hello to other sighthounds.

They also recognise people, even if they've not seen them for years.

RoseDog · 09/05/2022 21:12

My dog recognises staffies, she hates staffies and most bull breeds...she is a bloody staffie 🙄.

NightMaer · 09/05/2022 21:13

My whippet hated spaniels, my lurchers go loopy at the sight of another pointy dog, so I concur.

Gherkingreen · 09/05/2022 21:20

@collieresponder88 completely agree; he's a dreamboat of a pup! His mum was a rescue who was pregnant when my friend adopted her, so no idea what she mated with. He 4 now, part patt, part possibly lurcher and maybe a smattering of collie - stubborn, neurotic and very smart in equal measure 😀

nearlyspringyay · 09/05/2022 21:26

Yes! Ddog always gets totally over excited when he meets one of him, and there aren't many around.

coffeecupsandfairylights · 09/05/2022 22:21

Absolutely.

My beagle goes nuts if he sees other beagles and his favourite thing in the WORLD is a beagle meet!

ErrolTheDragon · 09/05/2022 22:27

Yes, my dachshund and his predecessor seemed to recognise and like other dachsies. The latter hated boxers after an overly boisterous one 'just playing' hurt his eye - boxer owners would see us shortening his leash and assure us their dog was friendly, we'd have to explain ours wanted to exact revenge. (He was also quite good at barking at larger dogs in general so they'd go and hide behind their owners)

vivainsomnia · 10/05/2022 16:05

Mine is pure breed and doesn't much like others of the same breed. She'll tolerate a couple but the one dog she will do everything to avoid is the same breed!

averythinline · 10/05/2022 16:51

My spaniel loves other spaniels! Especially springers/sprockers other gundogs/working dogs types too.goldies esp but likes labs too..but spaniels seem to have a way of playing that's instinctual.....

Other dogs ok but daschunds and Jack Russells don't seem to like him!

Summerholidayorcovidagain · 10/05/2022 16:55

My Husky has absolutely no interest in any ddog unless it is a Husky. April one year ds had his ddog pts. Our ddogs knew it well. The Boxing Day of that year we saw an absolute double of ds's ddog out locally... So much so I burst into tears. Ddogs went mad barking and pulling towards it. Was very upsetting.

snowgal · 10/05/2022 16:56

One of our dogs is a Romanian rescue, what I've found particularly interesting is that she has a completely different reaction to meeting another Romanian dog, it really is as though she goes "finally, someone who speaks the same language as me!"

One of our old spaniels used to happily socialise with dogs but would point blankly ignore any spaniels we came across on our walks 🤷‍♀️

Kat1953 · 10/05/2022 17:01

100% they do. We had quite a rare breed and on the very rare occasions (ok 2) we met another my lovely dog would be absolutely over the moon!

ApolloandDaphne · 10/05/2022 17:02

My Labrador loves other labs and retrievers. She will tolerate other biggish dogs but she loathes small dogs. She loves my friends beagle though as they socialise a lot together.

Summerholidayorcovidagain · 10/05/2022 17:03

Our sighthounds also love other pointy ddogs!
Although recently a very small retriever had our 2 under his spell like I have never seen!

SomePeopleAreJustIdiots · 10/05/2022 17:13

My cockapoo likes spaniels and cockapoos but they move in a different way to other dogs

He doesnt like labs- they are generally big and slow- but he loves 1 very old lab of a family friend

He likes dogs that chase- so spaniels

MissyB1 · 10/05/2022 17:16

Yes schnauzers are notorious for recognising each other, our schnauzer can recognise another from a very long way - before I’ve even seen a dog coming!

RIBlue · 10/05/2022 17:30

My mongrel hates GSDs with a passion. Locally there are a pair of Black and Tan rough collies which look very similar from across the fields but he knows instantly that they’re not and shows absolutely no interest whereas a GSD at the same distance would have his hackles up and him growling.

He’s a complete Heinz 57 but seems to identify as a long dog, his favourite friends are lurches and whippets and he’s only interested in playing chase like fast dogs. Dogs that want to wrestle and roll around in play confuse him!

Saucery · 10/05/2022 17:31

My Lab loves Spaniels and Collies, because she plays with them at doggy day care and they apparently have the Best Games. Gets a bit frustrated if they are off lead and she isn’t, although this is improving with age.
She really brightens up when she sees another Lab, though. Is more Lab-y with them, better behaved if they are well behaved and calm, loves an offlead play with them if they are equally matched in size and activity levels.

SmiledWtherisingsun · 10/05/2022 17:33

Of course.

Gribbie · 10/05/2022 18:04

My goldie met her cousin goldie for the first time (my brother's dog) and within a micro second they both went bonkers and started playing like crazy.

Vicliz24 · 10/05/2022 18:12

My whippet only likes other pointies but is slightly scared of greyhound's I assume due to their size . Interestingly he met his mum when he was four and it made me actually cry , they were so sweet together and obviously " knew" each other .

pigsDOfly · 10/05/2022 18:56

Absolutely.

My dog isn't really that interested in other dogs but if we meet another dog of the same breed she's always happy to greet them and she'll look up at me as if to say, 'look at this dog mum'.

She also more comfortable saying hello to dogs of a similar small size to her.

It's the same when they see their friends.

Some years ago we met a very young papillon puppy in the park (my dog's not a papillon). It was the puppy's first time out. They played together and really liked each other.

We'd meet in the park from time to time and they became firm friends.

I don't know what happened but we didn't see them for months, then one day we saw a papillon over the other side of the park.

My dog got very excited running over to meet the other dog only to realise, when she got close, that it was a different dog.

Her disappointment was obvious and so sad to see.

Her tail dropped and she just turned and walked away. I felt so sorry for her.

LakeFlyPie · 10/05/2022 20:32

DDog is a unique scruffy mutt but definitely recognises certain breeds (scared of GSDs after being bitten by one) and specific dogs (his 'mates')
He spotted his spaniel friend the other day who'd been to the groomers and had a short hair cut and he was squinting at him across the path in a 'is it really you?' way until he realised it was him and bounded over looking delighted!
I always find it fascinating how they can walk past certain dogs and completely blank them and go crazy / play / chase with others

muddyford · 10/05/2022 20:43

Definitely. My Labrador met a strange Labrador this morning and was so thrilled. And while we were watching a search Labrador on television, he sat up and watched too, until the programme swapped to a beagle.

Aria20 · 11/05/2022 13:56

@pigsDOfly ah this happened to my dog too, she always used to play with a border collie pup of a similar age then we didn't see them for ages. Months later we spotted a border collie across the field and she ran over except it wasn't the same one so she came back to me seeming disappointed this one didn't want to play chase with her.

She likes most dogs, particularly spaniels or cockapoos but she is not a fan of chihuahuas at all as a few she met when young snarled and snapped at her so she gives them a wide berth!
