How often each week could I feed ddog leftovers without it hurting her?

hiredandsqueak · 19/04/2022 14:48

Just that really? Two or three days a week she has leftover meat and veg that I have cooked. Often it's chicken, sometimes pork and sometimes beef with whatever veg is left. No gravy or sauce and no salt in the veg. Outside of that she has Lily's kitchen wet food with a bit of kibble mixed in.
She is fussy but the days she gets leftovers seems to help with her turning her nose up at the dog food as I think variety helps. She does beg for carrots while I'm chopping and frozen peas so occasionally throw some in the dogfood as well. But is it bad for her?

I wouldn't be concerned about that at all. Dogs evolved as scavengers with an inherently varied diet, and the bits you're feeding will be more nutritious than a lot of dog food on the market.

HirplesWithHaggis · 19/04/2022 15:33

All three of my dogs loved leftovers (no cooked chicken bones, obv) and the last adored raw carrots. All lived well into their teens, two mongrels and a border collie.

They're not supposed to have onions or garlic, but the small amounts they did get didn't seem to bother them any.

hiredandsqueak · 19/04/2022 16:58

I will continue then. I look after dgs and there is always his leftovers and I haven't got used to cooking for a few now the dc have left so often over cater and I just feel happier knowing nothing is being wasted.

You could feed them like this all of the time if you want , many people cook their dogs dinners !

hellcatspangle · 19/04/2022 17:02

When I was a child dogs used to be fed completely on scraps, and they generally did fine on it. I wouldn't worry about the amount you're giving her.

brun · 19/04/2022 17:13

I adopted an old, ill street dog. I'd cook chicken thighs for her, liver and, probably too often, sausages. But she didn't have long left. I love seeing dogs enjoy non dog food

hiredandsqueak · 19/04/2022 17:23

@stevalnamechanger not sure I'd want to commit to cooking for the dog daily though but happy for her to eat what is left.
@brun she is getting on for thirteen and a rescue who had had a rough life. Tbh when she first came she was grateful to be fed every day but once her paws were under table she started being fussy. The leftovers seem to keep the worst of the fussiness away anyway.

Ours have leftovers every day!! Pasta, rice, cooked veg def every day. Raw carrots are loved here. As is raw broccoli stalks! And any end bits of veg!
As a dc our collie cross prob ate more veg than meat. Lived to nearly 21!! Raw veg great for cleaning teeth!

villainousbroodmare · 19/04/2022 18:01

I feed my dog by mixing whatever (leanish) meat, fish or eggs is left over from the day with any rice, pasta or spuds and adding kibble. No onions, garlic, raisins etc. He's doing fine.

maltravers · 19/04/2022 18:06

Our dogs at home got some leftovers with their dog food most days and all lived long healthy lives.

HalloHello · 19/04/2022 18:08

All my parents dogs, past and present get leftovers. Although never just on their own, always a few tablespoons full with their usual dry food.

JayAlfredPrufrock · 19/04/2022 18:09

Beetroot. He loves beetroot.

Trulyweird1 · 19/04/2022 18:18

My two are very fond of cooked or raw carrots, broccoli, peas and apples.
Generally if we are having fish, I will cook a small amount for them as a topper ( microwave , water, no sauces etc). They also get some chicken, or lamb if we have that. They also get lamb or steak on their birthdays.

Veg could be every day; meats and fish maybe once or twice per week.

twopoes · 19/04/2022 18:28

Be careful with pork, they shouldn't have too much.

fairylightsandwaxmelts · 19/04/2022 18:28

Mine has leftovers everyday! He's perfectly fit and healthy.

Anonaymoose · 19/04/2022 18:40

Just be careful with overall calorie intake. Over 50% of dogs in the UK are obese. This is often down to added treats and extras.

brun · 19/04/2022 18:54

@hiredandsqueak mine was 14 with terminal cancer when I adopted her. I had her for 10 glorious months. Her amazing rescuer would give her meat when she could, sometimes just bread in gravy was all she could provide. So my girl was spoiled with food in those 10 months.

wetotter · 19/04/2022 20:46

I often keep a bit back (plain) for the dog. I think it's gives healthy variety in her diet

Her favourite is salmon

SmellyOldOwls · 19/04/2022 20:48

I used to make my dogs scrambled egg and toast on Saturday mornings Blush

HirplesWithHaggis · 19/04/2022 22:09

Did they fart all Saturday evening? Grin

NotQuiteUsual · 20/04/2022 15:52

My girl loves jacket potatoes more than life itself. We always make sure there's one for her now.

LabraDabraDoo · 20/04/2022 17:37

Our 18 month old Labrador has a ‘human meal’ at least once a day as well as some commercial dog food. I think his human meal is by far the healthiest thing we give him. He also has snacks such as eggs, bananas etc. He is a very active working dog and is thriving on a mixed diet. He is built to be slim and so far has remained so. Like the human family members we limit processed food and salt etc.

This evening we have a spare cod fillet, so he will have that with boiled new potatoes and broccoli.

Dogs survived on scraps from their first domestication until the 1950’s when dog food was first marketed. Mine is more discerning than your average cave-dog mind. His favourite words are ‘Sunday roast’.

Chickoletta · 20/04/2022 17:42

DH is a vet and thinks that the whole ‘no human food’ thing has been blown out of proportion - probably by the pet food industry. Obviously, you have to use common sense, but our Ddogs always have leftovers from the roast, the odd bit of rice and a chip or two if out for a pub lunch!

My vet sister says the same. She reckons the recommended portion sizes are wrong too, making pets obese. And our neighbour is a master of hounds who feed his own Labradors exclusively on leftovers and butchers scraps. You’d not find healthier dogs anywhere.

Same with my dogs. When I have the money I feed Royal Canin, but with the inflation I don't have the money to feed my family all month, let alone the dogs (4 of mine and sometimes family dogs too) so I mix table scraps in with the dry food to stretch it.
