How late do your puppies/dogs sleep?

We are one week in with a 10 week old puppy. He's settled really well and we can't complain. Sleeps through the night in his crate downstairs. But we're struggling with 5.30/6am mornings. We put him to bed an hour later last night thinking he might sleep later. Well that didn't work!! Tell me they start to sleep later as they get older??

Clocks change tomorrow, so that'll help.

Yes, they do get better as they grow up at dozing through the times their humans are not available for interaction (whether that's early morning or times of the day when you want to be doing something else)

Do you make sure she has time during the day as well, when she's left to her own devices, or is encouraged to nap?

Yes absolutely - lots of nap time during the day and he'll often take himself off to his crate for a snooze.

We have two whippets

12 month sleeps till we come and get her

6 month wakes at 6/6.30....now sometimes 6.45

10 weeks is still little, with a pea for a bladder

fairylightsandwaxmelts · 26/03/2022 07:27

Mine is four and will sleep until 10am if we let him.

But he didn't sleep in past about six until he was one or so - then it gradually got later and later. I'd say by 18 months he probably slept until 8am pretty consistently.

I'm afraid puppies come with lots of early mornings Grin

chocolatesaltyballs22 · 26/03/2022 07:35

Oh I know, I expected the early mornings while he's still little. I guess I just wanted to know it gets better eventually!

Don’t forget they are still growing… including their bladders! I found that as our pups got older, they needed less early starts. DDog is currently snoring in my ear and will be for a while yet…

GeneLovesJezebel · 26/03/2022 07:42

The lighter mornings affect how early they get up too.

Climbingthelaundrymountain · 26/03/2022 07:45

Ours did ask to be let out around 6:30 until he was about 6 months old. He's 2.5 now and he is SO lazy. He isn't a morning person and enjoys a good lie in. This morning I came down early, he did go into the garden for a wee then settled down on a blanket and has been asleep ever since.

Ilikewinter · 26/03/2022 08:17

11 month old and hes up between 5.00 - 5.30, but thats when im up for work so at the weekend i let him out for a wee and go back to bed, if im lucky he'll settle until 7am.....at that point hes wide awake! 😫

tizwozliz · 26/03/2022 08:21

Our pup is 10 months and happy to lie in until gone 9 these days . Even as a little pup though, she'd wake early, have breakfast and go to the toilet and then commence her first nap of the day around 7am.

Wolfiefan · 26/03/2022 08:22

3am yesterday.
7:20 today.

Jonny1265 · 26/03/2022 08:22

My 3yr old will sleep until 7-8.

Yeah that's totally our puppy. Breakfast and then back to sleep. But by then we're wide awake!

He's just started going to the door to ask to go out to wee. After only a week of toilet training. Don't want to be all smug as I'm sure he'll go backwards!

Ours is 9 months and wakes at 6-6.15 which we're seeing as a lie in, as he was waking at 4.30 recently...

PineappleRingo · 26/03/2022 11:35

About 6 months ours goes about 8.5 hours over night bar the very occasion she asks to earlier but then she’ll go back to bed and snooze til we get up

NeedAHoliday2021 · 26/03/2022 11:40

Our cocker wakes when we get up - 7am weekdays but can be as late as 9am weekends! On Friday dc let him out the kitchen at 7am and he came to our bed and went back to sleep while we got ready for work. I’m definitely a dog fan rather that puppy.

Boxbox2 · 26/03/2022 22:28

Varies with our now 16 week old pup.. anything from 6am to 8.30am is normal (she's been good at sleeping through since about 10 weeks, with the occasional 4.30am yelp for potty)

WorryMcGee · 26/03/2022 22:53

Don’t worry OP they definitely grow out of it - ours just laze around in their beds until we get up! (Apart from camping. If we are camping they think we should all get up when the sun comes up 😂😩)

Winterlove · 26/03/2022 23:08

Ours was up at 5.30-6am to start with and it got later and later as time went on.

He’s now 10 months, goes for his last toilet trip around 10pm and he will sleep until around 9.30am but has been known to lie in until 11am. Lazy boy. It can be a struggle to get him up and ready on the days he goes to daycare and gets picked up at 9am.

chocolatesaltyballs22 · 27/03/2022 07:44

Well we got to 7am today but only because the clocks changed!! Tired

We WFH so usual routine is not to get up until about 8. Similar time on a weekend. Obviously that's changed now.

Tbh, 1 week in and sleeping through the night until 6 is pretty good going. Probably unrealistic to expect much more right now.

Yeah am aware he's doing really well. Just wanted to know what to expect in the future that's all.

My Labrador will be 3 in June and wakes me up at six for her morning walk nearly everyday. I’d agree with a pp and say it does depend a bit on your normal morning routine. I get up at sixish most weekdays. Also depends on last walk I normally take her out at ten but if I’m up We’ll do an extra walk at midnight and I get an extra hour in the morning.

I have managed to train myself to go back to sleep though. First walk is done in my plain black PJs with coat and lined wellies. Put both back in utility on way back in, biscuits in the dog bowl and back to bed until children wake up. I love that half hour snooze.
