How late do your puppies/dogs sleep?

We are one week in with a 10 week old puppy. He's settled really well and we can't complain. Sleeps through the night in his crate downstairs. But we're struggling with 5.30/6am mornings. We put him to bed an hour later last night thinking he might sleep later. Well that didn't work!! Tell me they start to sleep later as they get older??

My dog (approx 4-5 yrs) sleeps in the kitchen and comes to greet whoever opens the door first. This could be quite early if youngest dc goes down but then they laze on the sofa together. I have no idea of actual sleeping times.

5.30 here - 7 year old golden retriever and 4 month old lab puppy. BUT this is when dh gets up to walk them - the GR would probably sleep until we went into him. The lab starts crying when he can hear that dh has got up, but I guess might sleep later without that. They also go to sleep fairly early in the evening. But we are morning people, so it suits our lifestyle and we haven't tried to make them sleep later. Puppy is crated at the moment too (older dog isn't), so I think this makes a difference too.

Mine is 15 months and sleeps in a crate 11-6 goes out for a wee then gets on our bed and would sleep til 10.30 if we weren't getting up

I think it depends on their personality rather than age. Our no longer with us Bichon use to have us up at 6 everyday. Our current dog a mongrel from Romania will sleep in until about 11 if we let him.

Sorry, but my dog never sleeps past 6.30 am and he’s nearly 4 years old. Even with clocks changing, he only slept half an hour more and usually the time difference doesn’t change anything. We got him at 9 weeks old during a heatwave, so his first couple of weeks we were up with him 4.30 am playing in garden. He then slept till 6 am and has stayed at this time since.

The labs like their routine, which means going to bed at 10 pm and rising at 7 am. They have gradually trained the Shepherd pup to do more or less likewise. Thank heaven.

My older dog won’t move til I do. One of the babies is a 6am boy, his brother only gets up because everyone else is.

Aw how sweet! I'd love a puppy!

Puppies want their mothers (i.e. you). Of course it's up to you how you train your little fur baby, crate or no crate, but might it be perhaps that he just wants to be with you? I used to let my dog sleep in our bed (but we got him when he was an older puppy). That's just my parenting style. But if you're desperate for a lie-in, perhaps you could experiment with letting him sleep with you? Up to you!

JulieYS · 27/03/2022 11:00

P.S. Another thing you could try is take him out for a late-night walk, to really exhaust him. That might make him sleep longer?

Thanks but there's no way my husband will have him on our bed! He's crate trained and goes in it no bother. We will walk him when we're able to, he only had his vaccinations a few days ago.

My pup was 5:30 am for about a year (and he would not go back to sleep). Now it’s 7 in the week (but that’s me waking him) and 8 on a weekend (that’s him!). We are back to 5:30 on the first night camping though!!

chocolatesaltyballs22 · 30/03/2022 15:59

So we have managed 7am since the clocks changed. He's got quite good at sitting there and waiting for us to go and get him, no crying if he's awake. Once he sees us in the room he goes mental though - clearly desperate for a pee!

Our 3 year old sleeps until we wake around 6.30 or 7. Has a stretch and a yawn, says good morning- and then happily snoozes while we have our coffee. She's happy to wait for her morning walk until 8.30. But she does have an active lifestyle during the day- good long walks and plenty of play.

Girliefriendlikespuppies · 30/03/2022 22:25

When we bought our puppy home at 8 weeks old he slept 10-5am ish and would then need the toilet. I can remember thinking this is hell and feeling like what have I done.

It does gradually improve, he's an adult dog now and sleeps 10pm until 9am ish! He hates getting up early in the mornings 😁
