How to separate dog and baby?

yorkshireteaspoonie · 24/03/2022 11:19

Can anyone recommend a car hammock that only overs half the seat? Currently the dogs (2 cavaliers) have a hammock that covers the whole of the back seat but when baby arrives I want to keep them separate.

I can't put them in the boot with a guard as that's where the pram will need to be.

Anyone found a good solution to this?

I really wouldn't have dogs loose in the back seat with a baby. I'm not sure what to suggest but I really don't think two dogs plus a baby in the car like that is a good idea.

LittleWins · 24/03/2022 11:29

Placeholding as we’ll hopefully be in the same situation soon.

PiffleWiffleWoozle · 24/03/2022 11:29

No, I think you need to leave the dogs behind if driving with the baby sorry. Too risky.

Replace car. Get people carrier with 3 banks of seats.

AwkwardPaws27 · 24/03/2022 11:52

We have this - www.zooplus.com/shop/dogs/dog_cages_carriers/car_bed/car_seat_mats/129693

I can't see it on their UK site at the moment though, but you might find another stockist. It has the option to unzip the middle and zip on the side panels, making a half-size option.

I'm currently pregnant but this is what we plan to use (he travels in it now to keep the seats clean, and he just goes to sleep).

I'm not sure other posters are saying the dogs will be loose - that is illegal anyway. Our dog is always securely tethered with a harness and a very short clip attached to the seat belt clip, so there is no way he could jump over the divider.

I personally feel it will be safer having a secured dog than a loose pram chassis in the back of the car in the event of an accident, so am going for this option over putting the dog in the boot.

Different pram/ sling. Compact folds available - three wheelers that sort of flop in half.

Leonberger · 24/03/2022 12:01

We have a compact pram that goes in the footwell. Dogs in boot with a guard.

AwkwardPaws27 · 24/03/2022 12:12

@Leonberger

We have a compact pram that goes in the footwell. Dogs in boot with a guard.
How do you secure the pram? I'm thinking of doing similar to the OP as can't work out how to keep the pram in place securely.
thebabynanny · 24/03/2022 12:18

I'd put the baby in the front seat.

myyellowcar · 24/03/2022 12:20

I have my dog in the front seat on a short seatbelt lead which buckles into the seatbelt buckle. Baby stays in the back seat. The lead is too short for the dog to get back there.

myyellowcar · 24/03/2022 12:21

Maybe do that and get a lead splitter for the pair of them?

Cinnabomb · 24/03/2022 12:23

Agree pram in footwell, dogs in boot.

Forestdweller11 · 24/03/2022 12:25

Definitely don't put the pram in the footwell!

Ostryga · 24/03/2022 12:26

@thebabynanny

I'd put the baby in the front seat.
Definitely do not do that! It’s illegal to have a rear facing seat in the front.
JustAnotherOpinion21 · 24/03/2022 12:29

Dogs should be either in a cage or be attached via a dog seatbelt. Law states animals should not be loose in a vehicle.

User65412 · 24/03/2022 12:31

Although not recommended, I don't think it's illegal as long as the airbags are turned off.
Can you get a bigger car? We have an estate and there's room in the boot for dogs and pram. Baby in the back.

User65412 · 24/03/2022 12:31

Sorry that's in response to baby in front seat. But yes loose dogs in the back seat isn't a good idea.

thebabynanny · 24/03/2022 12:32

@Ostryga - it's legal to have a rear facing seat in the UK?
You just need to turn off air bags.

Changethetoner · 24/03/2022 12:33

Sounds like you need a bigger car. volvo estate?

sweetzy · 24/03/2022 12:34

You need to find a way to have the dogs in the boot. It sounds like a really bad idea for them to be in the back with the baby.

RIPWalter · 24/03/2022 12:37

DD is 4, and only in the last few months since we turned her forward facing has she been in the back with the dog. Until then she was in the front and DD secured by harness/ dog seatbelt in the back, or in my old fiesta where the site bag couldn't be switched off, DD was in the back and dog was strapped in the front.

If both DH and I were traveling one of us would sit in the back.

RIPWalter · 24/03/2022 12:39

Dog secured with doggy seatbelt, not my DD, although I'm sure she would love that, as she thinks she is a dog half the time.

AlwaysLatte · 24/03/2022 12:41

We had to get an estate car so we could still fit dog crate and pram in the back away from the seats.

Saynotopineappleonpizza2021 · 24/03/2022 12:41

Baby in infant carrier in the front is the easiest solution

Kay7766923 · 24/03/2022 12:45

@Ostryga it's perfectly fine to have a lot of rear facing (and some forward facing seats) in the front seat provided you are following the manufacturers instructions. I've actually read that the front seat can be safer (unless the child seat isn't compatible of course) although I never went for it because I would have been too distracted by them personally.
