I think it’s time…

DDog is nearly 15, been fit and healthy. Last weekend couldn’t get up the stairs but all ok apart from that. Over the last 24 hours she’s having trouble standing.
I think it’s time and will get in touch with the vet in the morning.
I’ve never been through this before, can anyone tell me what to expect?
Thanks

I'm sorry to hear this. Are you going to have him putting him to sleep at home or at the surgery? I've always found that the thought of doing it is worse than actually doing it. It is the kindest thing that we ever do for our pets.

iamme21 · 06/03/2022 19:57

I think probably at the surgery. It’s breaking my heart but I know it’s the right thing for her.

I would say, let your vet guide you. They may be able to prescribe (we had an older dog who was in temporary pain but medication solved it). However, if they suggest it’s time … as hard and as unbelievable as it is, it’s the price of a dogs love and the last kind act we can do.

I’m so sorry op it’s so hard isn’t it. Ask the vet to give a sedative before the final injection sometimes they can have a reaction to the drugs - a sedative will make it more peaceful.

Sending you Flowers

iamme21 · 06/03/2022 20:28

Thanks for mentioning a sedative, I had thought about that so will ask.
She’s curled up on my knee now, making the most of the snuggles.

You can get a vet to come to your home which can be less stressful for the pupper. If she’s just only showing signs in the last 24 hours I imagine though you’ll want to take her in to get the vets opinion on whether it really is time xxxxx

userxx · 06/03/2022 20:32

You've clearly looked after her extremely well to get her to almost 15, you know your dog better than anyone so if you think it's time, then it's time. Speak to your vet tomorrow, it's heartbreaking but completely the right thing to do.

KateTheEighth · 06/03/2022 20:33

Nothing to add other than big hugs and love. It's so incredibly hard ❤️

iamme21 · 06/03/2022 20:35

I will, of course, see what the vet says. I just think she’s gone from being still quite active and wanting to go for walks, to being very unsteady and sleeping a lot. I don’t want her to be unhappy/in pain.

BadgerStripes · 06/03/2022 20:37

Before you decide upon pts, please check with your vet about the possibility of it being something treatable. Flowers

wishingchair1 · 06/03/2022 20:39

Oh so sad, it is very quick and peaceful for them. Literally seconds. Vets were very good, we ended up doing it in the car with covid.
We all were upset but it was the right thing tondonx

iamme21 · 06/03/2022 20:47

I will of course consult the vet first

When it's been time in the past for my dogs, they've gone quickly and peacefully, knowing I'd done the right thing by them gave me comfort.

YellowAndGreenToBeSeen · 06/03/2022 21:15

Oh, sorry OP - I in no way was suggesting you wouldn’t take your Vets opinion. More, was suggesting it may not be time just yet. Sorry if it sounded contrary to that.

Wishing you much love.

iamme21 · 06/03/2022 21:20

@YellowAndGreenToBeSeen No, it didn’t! I hope I’m wrong and we have a little more time ❤️

This is a useful explanation of what to expect: www.compassionunderstood.com/page/the-euthanasia-procedure

My last dog howled when he was PTS. He's the only dog I've known do it (I've been present at a number of dog PTSs through my job) but the vet said that it wasn't unusual, so I thought I'd let you know so that you can be prepared just in case. It was a very soulful howl and it felt like it was him letting go. Good luck tomorrow.

ABitBesotted · 07/03/2022 06:12

I'm so sorry. Kipling was right about giving your heart to a dog to tear. It's too cruel that they are with us so briefly.

You've given her a lifetime of love, care, walks and games. You just have cling to that.

iamme21 · 07/03/2022 07:36

Thanks everyone. I’m just waiting for the vet to open at 8.30

lljkk · 07/03/2022 09:33

I hope the appointment has gone ok.

I wish someone had told me, the vets have to administer the potion twice. Said it was legally required to do it twice. Hence high cost to euthanise, and it prolongs the experience, plus it looks excessive & pointless. i know this is small thing, but I wish I had known.

iamme21 · 07/03/2022 09:54

Thanks for all of the information, it’s really helping me to prepare. Got an appointment at 4 o’clock so making a big fuss today, lots of cuddles and treats

She’s gone 💔 vet thinks she may have had a stroke and PTS was the right thing. It’s was quick and peaceful. I’m heartbroken. Thanks for your support today.
