How bad will this be..kennels next door

We have just moved semi rurally, no neighbour as next door is being renovated. Detached houses but relatively close, long gardens alongside each other with a thick hedge between. We've met the guy moving in next door and he has 6 working dogs that hes going to keep in a kennel at the end of the garden. I know nothing about dogs and not a huge fan..is this going to be hugely awful? I imagine they'll be barking a lot, or at least if I go up that end of the garden and probably smell..I assume he leaves them in all day whilst he's at work. Anyone have dogs in a similar set up or any experience of this please?

I would expect a lot of noise but I can't imagine it would cause any smell issues outdoors. Friend of mine lives near dog breeders and there's always barking I'm afraid.

hellcatspangle · 05/03/2022 18:13

If they are working dogs surely he will be taking them to work?

roseopose · 05/03/2022 18:16

I'm not sure if he'd take them to work, he does some sort of building I think

If hes got 6 working dogs then i would imagine they'll be well trained - probably better than living next door to a yappy terrier! ..... and wont he be taking them to work with him?

Ilikewinter · 05/03/2022 18:17

Oooh crossed posted! ..... do you know what type of dogs they are?

roseopose · 05/03/2022 18:18

He uses them for rabbit hunting so not farm dogs

OP posts:
roseopose · 05/03/2022 18:18

They're whippets I think

No reason to expect any smell if they are kept properly and noise can be dealt with .

LondonQueen · 05/03/2022 18:19

I would move.

Tynesider007 · 05/03/2022 18:32

Probably lurchers for rabbits. I thought this was illegal ( assuming you are in England) but I've just checked and its not. I would not be keen on this near me but not sure if there is anything you can do about it.

Clockbookbeast · 05/03/2022 18:33

My neighbour has three large dogs whom live in a kennel at the bottom of the garden the dogs barked the first two weeks (even when I just went to the back door), I never hear them now I think they've got used to us. There is no smell, the owners do clean it out regularly (they also have chickens next to them who actually make more noise than the dogs). I think you may need to be patient while the dogs get used to you, and actively use the garden so the dogs get used to you (our neighbours told us to do this).

roseopose · 05/03/2022 18:36

Thanks @Clockbookbeast he seems like a nice guy who probably takes good care of his animals. Hopefully theyll be quiet/not in there all day/get used to us. Don't know if whippets are particularly barky!

If it's rabbits I suspect they'll be lurchers, not whippets.

As lurchers are mixes, whether they're noisy (or not) really depends on the mix. I know some lurchers who are perfectly behaved and don't make a noise and others who are unfortunately poorly trained, noisy and aggressive.

If he trains them well, they shouldn't be a bother.

roseopose · 05/03/2022 18:52

I can confirm they are whippets, google says not a barky breed. Possibly calming down a bit!

countrygirl99 · 05/03/2022 18:54

Our neighbour has a whippet and we never hear a peep.

fairylightsandwaxmelts · 05/03/2022 18:55

Whippets are generally quiet dogs so they shouldn't be much of a bother if he looks after them properly. They tend to sleep most of the day!

roseopose · 05/03/2022 18:57

Thank you so much @fairylightsandwaxmelts and country girl, slightly reassured by your comments. Really don't want to have to move again so soon!

My friend has whippets and I've never ever heard them bark once. They're pretty low-maintenance as far as dogs go, I think :)

2bazookas · 05/03/2022 19:15

Working dogs are generally well behaved IME. When not working they eat and sleep :-) Our farm neighbour's three wd's live in an outdoor kennel in the farmyard and the only time we hear them is if a visitor or their vehicle arrives at the farm.

The same distance away in the other direction, a neighbour's pet Jack Russell barks non stop :-( whenever he's outside. They put him out whenever they have visitors, to stop him barking non-stop indoors.

SomeFuckingWizardry · 05/03/2022 19:22

Just reiterating what lots of PPs have said, my parents have an 11 year old whippet and I have genuinely never heard her bark, they are also immensely lazy, I'd be very surprised if they caused any issues at all!

Easterbunnyiswindowshopping · 05/03/2022 19:26

Imo of Lurchers they aren't noisey at all. Wouldn't be very good at hunting if they were!! We have 3 and ndn never hear them they say..

MrsDeaconClaybourne · 05/03/2022 19:34

Like pp have said whippets/lurchers are generally quiet dogs. Personally I'd worry in that situation that it would make my dogs unsettled and barky. If I didn't have my own dogs I don't think it would bother me.

PenguinLove1 · 05/03/2022 19:42

Working dogs kept in kennels are usually well trained, whippets are quiet dogs that will sleep when left alone. Initially they may bark when people go near but will stop when they get used to it. I wouldnt worry about it to be honest.

roseopose · 05/03/2022 19:46

They wouldn't be able to see us in the garden because of the thick hedge between so hopefully they won't notice we're the other side of it. I'm not fussed about sporadic barks just was worried with that many theyll either all bark at once or one will bark constantly!

Another one saying that whippets are usually quiet.

As for smell, if he has ferrets they're likelier to be stinkier, but only at close quarters. And ferrets are silent (and actually very sweet, if you put a clothes peg on your nose).
