Happy long weekend all!

We were away a few weeks ago, TerrorPup had a great time. Excellent in the car on some long journeys, long walks (we live in London so doing four miles without seeing a single person was new!). She was also noticeably calmer in the holiday home than previous times she's been away. We didn't have to lift the rugs which means maybe mine can come back out from 18 months of storage!

We had her spayed this week and we're now trying to keep her calm and chill. If anyone is on the fence between traditional and keyhole I would without a doubt go keyhole.

tizwozliz · 16/04/2022 11:01

She slept nicely on the ferry, declined to go wee or poo in the outdoor area and held it all until we got to the beach before doing the longest wee and biggest poo!

Had a little play on the beach and she's been slumbering in the car since.

My pup is 10 months old and is clearly in the throes of adolescence. We had another incident of destructive chewing, even worse than the first one. He has also become selectively deaf and refuses to respond to cues he has known perfectly for months. Honestly, I just feel like crying today.

GuyFawkesDay · 18/04/2022 20:32

@certainshepherdpups mine has done this at 10 months too. After a long period being not destructive he's shredded one bed and 3 toys to this week. And a teatowel I knotted for him.

He's like a stupid puppy again 🙄

Aria20 · 18/04/2022 20:44

@GuyFawkesDay mine still shreds toys to get squeakers out.... she's 14 months now and my friends Dalmatian still does it at 4!

certainshepherdpups · 18/04/2022 21:58

@GuyFawkesDay it's so frustrating, isn't it? Adolescence is hitting with a vengeance here. My pup has always been a chewer though his chewing had been confined to permitted objects until now. Sad

LadyCatStark · 18/04/2022 23:05

Don’t worry guys, it really does get better around a year old! Billy is a delight now and I felt exactly the same between 9-11 months! We had some good news today, Billy was offered an agility class at 8:30pm so he can go to both gun dog training and agility 😂. He’ll have a better social life than me!

PugInTheHouse · 19/04/2022 14:16

First chewing disaster, thought Wolfpup was chewing nicely on the toy that was in front of him, nope, my laptop charger was under it. So lucky that Amazon do same day delivery!

Generally things are OK, he just has a couple of crazy times a day, first thing and early evening but pretty good the rest of the time. He sleeps through the night but last night he woke at 530am and wouldn't really settle but hoping that it's a one off, usually it's 630-730.

I am worried about the chewing as its new to me but we just need to be on the ball I guess!

ABitBesottedWithMyDog · 19/04/2022 18:09

Sympathies, I have a chewer.

There are sprays you can get to protect the furniture and carpet.

My couch has a lovely ventilation hole on either side of it.

PugInTheHouse · 19/04/2022 21:31

I will be ordering some spray ASAP!! He's really good at stopping chewing if I tell him, he hasn't realised he can run away or refuse to drop it yet, give it a week or so Grin

LadyCatStark · 20/04/2022 15:43

The weirdest thing happened today. I took Billy to visit my sister for a work “meeting” (we work together). She has been having an awful time with her husband and as soon as Billy met him (for the first time) he went mad barking at him. He also barked at his brother who is just as awful! This is the dog that literally never barks. He’s clearly a very good judge of character!

GuyFawkesDay · 20/04/2022 17:32

I reckon they know, it's funny isn't it?

That said mine is a twat who thinks everyone should just adore him and play with him and is a nuisance.

He has redeemed himself at little this week by being an excellent boy on his walks, including for my son.

Anyone else finding their house is basically one giant ball of shed dog hair at the moment. I have one of those lint rakes and pulled 2 huge handfuls out of it, and it is hoovered 3x a week and lint rakes weekly too!! There's furry tumbleweed all over the hard floors!!!

squareorange · 20/04/2022 18:13

Hi, I've been lurking here for ages and finally joining in.

I've got a 7 month old lab, who has not been easy let's say. But I won't pour my heart out just yet. Just wanted to say hello before I cry on your shoulders!

tizwozliz · 20/04/2022 19:35

Ada is mostly being well behaved on holiday, she's settled nicely in strange places with new people but we're still having a mad spell in the evening where she's unsettled, panting and wanting to chew/hump pillows and barking if she's denied access! It's doing my head in.

She was like this for a couple of weeks before we came away so I don't think it's holiday related. She settles straight away in the car so I'm currently sat in the car on the driveway with her in the boot! If only she'd taken to a crate the same way as she likes the car, would make life simpler right now.

@GuyFawkesDay yes he absolutely must have got bad vibes from them. He’s been around lots and lots of men in the last few days and hasn’t woofed once!

We’ve been to gun dog training and agility tonight. The gun dog training was excellent. It was mainly about steadiness as it was our first lesson but my god did he love the agility!

GuyFawkesDay · 20/04/2022 22:57

Need to do gundog training but it's £20/he for group lesson here. I haven't got that cash!!

LadyCatStark · 21/04/2022 08:11

@GuyFawkesDay that’s a fortune! It’s a fiver here!

PugInTheHouse · 21/04/2022 08:35

@squareorange these threads are great for offloading/support. I have been on and off here for 18 months, I have a 19 mo pug and an 11 week old alaskan malamute x pup.

tizwozliz · 22/04/2022 08:16

We had a great day yesterday, lots of swimming and playing with other dogs. Ada did some dock jumping for the first time.

We’re just back from a week away, thankfully the kennel cough only lasted a couple of days so he was 100% fine by time we went.

it was so much better than I expected! He was such a good boy, no accidents, slept well, great recall on walks - I think we’re in that sweet spot before he turns into a teenager………

GuyFawkesDay · 23/04/2022 08:17

How old @Autumn101 ?

FawkesPup has definitely got teenage ups and downs. Some weeks he's mad, others golden. Hoping eventually he settles into the latter but he's a Spaniel so.....yeah ... 🤣

Autumn101 · 23/04/2022 08:27

He’s nearly 5 months now, time flies!

But he’s a spaniel too so I’m expecting a hard period at some point 😂

Yamyam13 · 23/04/2022 12:09

Hi All,

Been watching but haven't jumped in yet.. til now!

Have a 6 month old Black Lab bitch.
She's lovely! Going great.
Though adolescence feels like it's creeping in! The recall is becoming more hit and miss etc!

Anyway, felt like jumping in finally as I wanted to ask about: STICKS aka TWIGS

Do you let your dogs chew (eat) them?
There seem to be 2 camps...

Our girl has become obsessed with little twigs in the last 2 weeks, picking them up and eating them everywhere we go.
Do you let it slide? I've kind of have as we live in London where there are a billion other way worse things she could pick up so I look at it as 'pick your battles'...

She has diarrhoea at the moment, but could be anything she ate, as I said, there's plenty of dodgy things about, and it's really stepped up now it's picnic season!

Autumn101 · 23/04/2022 12:37

Hi Yamyam - I do let mine chew sticks and twigs. He’s obsessed and loves nothing more than snuffling in the undergrowth to find a good one!! He generally chews them and spits them out into tiny pieces

LadyCatStark · 23/04/2022 15:59

I let Billy chew sticks too…outside!
