Trying to work out how much to insure for £7k or £12k.

As much as you can afford!
I work in the vet sector and bills are on the rise!
Make you you get a life time policy

7k might sound a lot - my dog had an issue with her white blood cells- 3 night stay at Langford vet hospital plus intensive care was £4 alone

If you can afford 12k do it - especially if you have a designer dog

Bibbitybobbityboo86 · 24/02/2022 21:11

£4K *

iloveewanthedreamsheep · 24/02/2022 21:41

Another vet industry worker here - I agree go as high as you can afford. My own dog had late onset epilepsy and her diagnosis cost around £3k about 6 years ago.

fairylightsandwaxmelts · 24/02/2022 21:56

15k lifetime cover. We have the same cover for all our pets (a dog and three cats).

Vets bills can get very expensive, very fast.

GreenClock · 24/02/2022 21:58

Any recommendations re. providers ?

Bibbitybobbityboo86 · 24/02/2022 22:10

Pet plan

Bibbitybobbityboo86 · 24/02/2022 22:13

Also check with your vets if they have any insurance companies they refuse to deal directly with.
We have a list that we won’t do direct claims with
Animal friends
Anything that has any thing to do with E&L avoid

Scattyhattie · 24/02/2022 22:30

Younger dog I increased policy to 12k Petplan on renewal while still could as no pre-existing conditions. Oldie's stuck on Pet plan 7k which doesn't go that far now if need specialist treatment, an MRI is 2-3k and vet fees are rising so have to consider cover in 5-10yrs as it doesn't increase and you'll probably be tied in once have anything bar vaccinations on your dogs vet notes.

£10k managed to rack up £7.6 so far this year Confused

WeAllHaveWings · 24/02/2022 22:53

We are on £4k for our 8 year old lab. Started at £28/month as a pup and now £75/month. It is his birthday soon so expecting another increase. When you go with what you can afford factor in the increases as they get older.

We have been lucky so far he's never been over the limit, very close twice but never over (yet!)

PermanentlyDizzy · 24/02/2022 23:31

The most you can afford on a lifetime policy.

One of our dogs (a large breed) ran up over £20,000 of bills in 18 months after developing a life threatening auto-immune condition. 1 week in a ITU at a specialist hospital alone cost over £7,000 and some of his meds cost over £400 a fortnight! I have never been more relieved to have decent insurance cover, as it meant we didn’t have to even think about whether or not we could afford treatment.

We are with PetPlan, vet puts in our claims electronically (there is an £8 charge for this) and we are generally paid within 48 hours. So much easier than it was years ago with long-winded claims forms etc.

AwkwardPaws27 · 25/02/2022 00:03

£7k per year with Bought By Many & wishing I'd gone higher. AwkwardPup developed immune mediated polyarthitis at 9 months, he's now 16 months and we've burned through close to 9k...
BBM have been great though, claims submitted online (no forms to sign etc) and they've paid every penny within a few weeks of each claim. Both first opinion & specialist vets were happy to do direct claims too (so we only paid the excess up front).

Ethelswith · 25/02/2022 00:11

£15k

Avert I know, who gets a lot of stuff done on his pets on 'mates rates' was still faced with a bill for over £4K when his dog needed an operation. He says never less than £7k (via insurance or savings you can use at any time) and more if you can afford it

Girlintheframe · 25/02/2022 05:16

15k with bought by many

BiteyShark · 25/02/2022 05:46

£4K with petplan but it isn't enough but unfortunately from a small puppy he has racked up lots of claims and pre existing conditions that I can't increase that amount or change providers.

muddyford · 25/02/2022 13:01

£15k with Bought by Many.

blanketyblanked · 26/02/2022 15:51

6k. Hoping it will cover most things!

MrsWinters · 26/02/2022 23:13

15k, up until the age of three then self insure

Montague57 · 28/02/2022 20:03

As much as you can afford! It’s crazy how costs add up. Ours just had an op. Investigations, emergency vet visits and operation cost almost £9k, of which only £7k was covered by insurance

jytdtysrht · 28/02/2022 20:04

just make sure it's a lifetime policy

BunnyRuddington · 01/03/2022 18:33

15k Lifetime with Agria. Vet really urged me to get the best I could afford as she’d just had to deal with a dog that had a new liver complaint and the bill was £6k, Family didn’t have enough cover. She basically said that anything under £7k was insufficient.

pupcakes · 01/03/2022 21:48

Another one here with 15k with Bought By Many, just not worth the risk not having it. It's £55 a month for my two pups.

Asdf12345 · 02/03/2022 21:02

We don’t insure our animals but do have readily accessible savings.

Tanfastic · 02/03/2022 21:10

I've got lifetime cover with Pet Plan for 7k at £30 a month but judging by the comments on here that's not really enough! I also pay £15 a month direct to vet for worming and other discounts which have come 8n handy recently when he got an infection in his castration incision and had to have quite a bit of antibiotics.

My last dog was 15 and never really had to claim though all his life really, I think I only claimed for £150. You just never know though.

DD is 8 months

PugInTheHouse · 13/03/2022 12:18

I was recommended £4-6k for new pup, I am now worried that's not enough. The advice is so confusing.
