Why are dogs that are likely to jump up on strangers not kept on leads? I have lost count of the amount of muddy paws that have jumped on me on a walk resulting in clean clothes needing a wash, sometimes coat and trousers. Some owners don't even apologise for it. I am a dog owner, fortunately mine has never jumped up, but i find this so annoying of dog owners, it's not cute.

Do you keep dog treats in your pocket? It seems strange that this happens to you so often, as far as I recall it has only ever happened to me once. And my dog is trained not to jump up.

Stumpedasatree · 21/02/2022 12:37

No treats and no interaction at all with the dog.

I just wear clothes I don’t mind the odd paw print on tbh. Lots of dogs have their Off Days when a jump up to the nice lady with treats in her bag happens Grin

Kizty · 21/02/2022 12:41

Oh I know this is annoying but if you are walking in a very doggy area which is almost exclusively used by dog walkers (our local woods is like this) then I think it’s easier to just accept it will happen occasionally and dress accordingly. Of course it shouldn’t but it just does.

Saucery · 21/02/2022 12:45

I’ve never met an owner who thinks it’s cute. They are always really apologetic.

In the 18 months after we lost our last dog I treasured the odd little paw print a cheeky dog left on me when we were out walking. I didn’t encourage them, but I never minded. Mud washes off easily.
Reminded me of the signal DH and I gave to each other when walking our old dog “WHITE TROUSER WARNING!”. Those people would be extra Cross about paw prints or splashes. Such a shame they only had their best pale jeans to walk round the woods Hmm

fairylightsandwaxmelts · 21/02/2022 13:19

It's obviously poor manners and training but I do think it's unrealistic to always expect to meet perfectly trained dogs.

I wouldn't wear anything on a dog walk that had to remain clean!

KaptainKaveman · 21/02/2022 13:23

LOL at the dog squad who think theirs mutt jumping on people, slobbering on them, barking at them and chasing them and generally being filthy and uncontrolled is all perfectly fine. What neanderthals.

PollyRoulllson · 21/02/2022 13:25

I am amazed at the comments saying it is fine to be jumped on by other peoples dogs. It is not fine and people should be able to go for a walk and not be hassled by other peoples dogs.

It is not up to dog walkers to decide which areas are "doggy" and what people should wear when going out for a walk!

Dogs should be under control or on a lead if they are work in progress.

Strugglingtodomybest · 21/02/2022 13:25

I suppose that, in many cases, they may still be (overgrown) puppies who love everyone and still think that everyone loves them.

If an owner is apologetic then I would guess that it's not a normal thing for the dog to have done maybe? I know I wouldn't want to spend every walk having to constantly apologise.

Not how I would have worded it but made me laugh Smile

But not everyone has gone on a dog walk they have just gone for a walk....
Stellaris22 · 21/02/2022 13:27

If you're walking in a town centre, along pavements then it's reasonable to be annoyed if this happens.

If you're walking in a woods or somewhere that's muddy anyway, then I don't understand why you're getting upset. Why would you wear expensive/fancy clothes on a walk? Even if I didn't have a dog I'd wear a waterproof coat and clothes I don't mind getting muddy.

Dogs shouldn't be jumping up, but they aren't machines and get excited.

Nonnymum · 21/02/2022 13:30

I'm not a dog owner and it has happened to me and yes it is very annoying. It's particularly annoying when I have had children with me and dogs have tried to jump up. Then the dog owners just say they are just trying to be friendly.
Maybe they are but it's not welcome!

SpaceDetective · 21/02/2022 13:30

Where on earth do you walk?

I can recall one incidence of a dog jumping up at me in the last year and in that case it was a young dog, I had treats in my pocket and the owners were very apologetic.

Saucery · 21/02/2022 13:32

Well, I wouldn’t go to a children’s party with a chocolate fountain and candy floss stall whilst wearing a couture ballgown, so wearing clothing that you don’t mind a bit of mud on when out in the woods isn’t a massive deal to me. Seems it is to some.

PollyRoulllson · 21/02/2022 13:32

If the dogs are jumping up and the owner cannot stop them - the dogs will continue to jump up. Dogs do what the rehearse and get very good at it.

To stop dogs from jumping up they will need to be on a lead and be trained how to behave especially when they are excited or *overgrown puppies.

Continuing to let them jump up is not training and the dogs will not grow out of it they will just get better and better at it.

If people are inexperienced and do not know how to train their dog to not jump up at strangers then they can use a lead . A simple effective 100% solution.

There is no need for dogs to jump up at strangers.

Thunderpunt · 21/02/2022 13:33

Have you really 'lost count' OP - or has it just happened once, this morning?
I walk twice a day in a very dog walk-ery area, full of dogs and their owners, mainly off lead, and rarely get jumped up on by dogs.... normally they are more interested in sniffing out squirrels, or playing with other dogs it's seems to me. In fact I cannot remember the last time a dog jumped up at me it's such a rare occasion.
Or maybe I live in an area with exceedingly well behaved dogs....Hmm

ChardonnaysPetDragon · 21/02/2022 13:33

I almost never happens to me, even though I keep large supplies of biscuits on my person.

The only dogs who jump on me are puppies or dogs who know me and who I have made fuss off in the past.

PollyRoulllson · 21/02/2022 13:35

MsTSwift · 21/02/2022 13:38

Urgh yes bloody annoying I was wearing my normal coat on a woodland walk and a great big Labrador ran up jumped up put it’s grim filthy paws all over my coat 🙄. Owners response? “He never does that”. Err he just did mate 🙄🙄

ChardonnaysPetDragon · 21/02/2022 13:40

Where did I say I encourage the jumping up?

Of course I make fuss of them when they are off the lead in the park or when they play with my boys.

Branleuse · 21/02/2022 13:41

It doesnt happen to me that much, but i dont really mind when it does. One of my dogs used to be a pain for jumping up at people so we put her on a lead if we see people or dogs

fairylightsandwaxmelts · 21/02/2022 13:46

But not everyone has gone on a dog walk they have just gone for a walk....

I know that and nowhere did I say it was acceptable but I do think as a dog owner you need to be realistic and accept that not all dogs are well trained.

As a dog owner you will smell of other dogs and probably of treats so you're more likely to attract jumping opportunists too.

caranations · 21/02/2022 13:47

Yeah, this has happened to me too, and it really pisses me off.

PollyRoulllson · 21/02/2022 13:50

You implied it by saying the only ones that jump up at you are the ones that you make a fuss of - therefore your behaviour encourages jumping up if these are the only dogs that do it!
