What kibble do you use?

We’ve just moved ours off AVA onto Arden Grange sensitive fish.

What do you use kibble wise? (No raw bores)

Royal canin small dog. She came weaned on to it and always looks fantastic so had no reason to change. One of the main ones recommended by vets too (not by raw/grain free feeders but that's another subject)

liveforsummer · 15/02/2022 09:06

Fwiw the all about dog food isn't actually based on any science, just goes for the highest meat content and says that's the best - which isn't actually what a domestic dog needs. They aren't wolves

HoppyHop · 15/02/2022 09:07

Autarky chicken. He's been on it for 5 years and it suits him. Good teeth/coat/bowels (!)

LakeFlyPie · 15/02/2022 09:09

Pooch and Mutt (salmon or turkey) kibble. Gets reasonable scores on this website and usually 20+% off codes available

allgreythings · 15/02/2022 09:11

We use eden, started on Ava but dpup stopped eating it.

Cluckycluck · 15/02/2022 09:13

Aatu. We used to use Orijen but found it was beginning to aggrevate our dog's allergies. The dog much prefers Aatu, unfortunately the cat does too so I'm constantly pulling him away from the bowl.

I've recently changed to Tails. My dog was on tins but he had 8 weeks of persistent diarrhoea and the vet recommended a hypo allergenic formula. Tails was one of the nonhvet ones she recommended and he's been great on it ever since. Although I do add their brand of wet food to it too as he's not a fan of dry food.

@liveforsummer

Is there a better website for information?

SirChenjins · 15/02/2022 09:19

Royal Canin here too - that’s what our breeder (with many years experience) used so we’ve just kept him on that. He gets that for breakfast and lunch, home cooked dog food for dinner and natural chews/treats. No problems so far.

Are vets trained in nutrition in the U.K.? I’m not sure .
There’s another food comparison run by nutritionalists petfoodexpert.co.uk

. We use a mix of kibble and fresh food here , as ddog loves it when I add a sardine or egg and leftover veg.

I'm not sure, I used to work at a university vet school and go off what the vets there have said. The foods with years of scientific research (there are a few can't remember the others off the top of my head) are what they recommend.

Some are especially at top vet schools

Another vote for Eden. Expensive, but so nutrient dense my dog needs half the amount she needed of her original kibble.

AlwaysLatte · 15/02/2022 09:31

Arden grange but we always top it with raw or scrambled egg, sardines, yoghurt or sprats.

AlwaysLatte · 15/02/2022 09:32

I have been tempted to try and make my own dog food.

SirChenjins · 15/02/2022 09:34

@AlwaysLatte

I have been tempted to try and make my own dog food.
There are loads of recipes online - I stick everything in the slow cooker and just leave it to cook, then freeze it.
AlwaysLatte · 15/02/2022 09:42

@SirChenjins thanks, I'm definitely going to try this. Although maybe as a topper for the kibble rather than total meal.

SirChenjins · 15/02/2022 09:49

@AlwaysLatte - I often mix and match and will divide his daily portion of home cooked foot between lunch and dinner then top each with kibble. It seems to work well - although I’m sure someone will tell me I’m doing it wrong!

Floralnomad · 15/02/2022 09:56

We feed Millie’s Wolfheart ranger mix with Applaws chicken in broth tins , dog is very fussy and this is a combination that he will eat .

MintyGreenDream · 15/02/2022 09:57

Aatu

Platinum

Gain Maintenance - good value (cheap) for retired greyhounds. General wisdom is that more than 20% protein in kibble (as opposed to wet) sends them a bit hyper. You do get some people who say that's old fashioned rubbish, but without giving any evidence. Ours thrives on it, with Butchers, sardines, tuna and so on as a topper.

PugWhiskers · 15/02/2022 11:06

This is a timely thread as I want to change my dog's kibble.

She came to us on Royal Cannin, which I kept her on for a while but then moved her on to Orijen. She always seems to have soe sort of skin allergy though, bumpy and scratchy. I then changed to Orijen Six Fish and she's never had a skin issue since.

We're in a dilemma at the moment though, because the cost of Orijen is going up and it is becoming harder to find easily on a reliable basis. It's a Canadian brand and I don't know if that feeds in to availability problems. I want something that's readily available from many places.

I'm nervous about giving her anything containing chicken and even many hypoallergenic foods or fish or lamb flavours do have chicken oil or chicken fat when you look at the ingredients.

I think I've settled on Autarky white fish & potato. No chicken in it at all. I know it's a step down in quality from Orijen so I can't say I don't feel guilty, but cost and practicality have to be factored in too.

Lorrymum · 15/02/2022 12:17

My pup hates Tribal for some reason. She loved it for a month or so and then wouldn't touch it. I have a bag that I'm about to donate to food bank. I now feed her on JWB.
My Mum thinks its hilarious that I fret about my pups diet. Twenty years ago she used to feed our family dog whatever tin was on special offer in the supermarket and table scraps.

Orangesox · 15/02/2022 13:09

Millies Wolfheart. HRH, Queen of Fussiness and her own Dominion likes the Utility, Gundog and Duck & Veg varieties. She has this separately from their wetfood as she prefers to not mix textures... I'm sure she's not a real labrador Grin
