Dog tomorrow (eek!) but I’m injured

DP and I have been trying to get a rescue dog, have had the house tour approval etc and we’re waiting for the right one to come along…

Just had a call saying there is a dog that might suit and could be here tomorrow (on a foster to possibly adopt basis)

Normally we would jump at the chance but…

I have at least two broken ribs and a broken shoulder at the moment so in a sling type arrangement and quite a bit of pain. DP would be around but I’m relying on him quite a lot at the moment

But she’s very cute and she needs love

I'd go and see her, ask them if they could keep her another week. To give you a chance to start heeling. And then spend next week training DP to look after a dog.

I collected a GWP two days after spraining my knee, we coped.

But if you don't want her, I'll have her Wink

picklemewalnuts · 05/02/2022 14:08

Says she's good on the lead, and she'll be a bit subdued at first as she settles in. She's adorable. She doesn't look like a physically pushy dog. Think you'll be ok!

Aquamarine1029 · 05/02/2022 14:09

Oh dear. I don't think you're in any condition to entertain a rescue, honestly. You have serious injuries that require rest.

FFSFFSFFS · 05/02/2022 14:10

Oh her little face!!

She’ll cuddle you better!!!

Chelsea26 · 05/02/2022 14:11

I’m very obedient and quite good at coming to heel when told! Grin

They need to live her out of her foster today so another week won’t work and it’s a couple of hours away so I can’t really do the round trip in my current state anyway.

DP is very good with dogs and will look after all of us - I’m just worried about when he has to leave really. If she’s calm and doesn’t pull I may be ok. If she jumps a lot and gets excited she could cauSe me some damage!

We’ve sent a message asking the question to the lady so we’ll see what she says too but I’d hate to miss out and wait another 6 months when I might be ok…

We have 4 kids (9,10,11&12) in the house for some of the week so not many dogs are suitable

SourMilkGhyll · 05/02/2022 14:16

She looks beautiful. If dh is supportive of the idea I would go for it. She looks like a really good dog on paper. Would be a shame to miss out on the chance of having her. Your DC are of a reasonable age to be helping out with her around the house.

SourMilkGhyll · 05/02/2022 14:18

There is a lot you can do with her training wise whilst you're sitting down. And an excuse to spend a lot of time cuddling (if she is happy to do so) would be great for bonding with her.

Easterbunnyiswindowshopping · 05/02/2022 14:23

If we didn't have 4 already op I would fight you for it!!.

fairylightsandwaxmelts · 05/02/2022 14:27

Do it.

Most rescue dogs can really benefit from few (if any) walks and just lots of time at home bonding with their owners while they decompress and adjust to their new surroundings.

Chelsea26 · 05/02/2022 14:28

Oi! Hands off my dog! She does look lovely doesn’t she? Smile

I’m thinking more and more that I’ll be ok but DP is being predictably sensible and cautious (this is normally why we work well together - he’s logistics, I’m morale Grin)

Waiting for the lady to message back

tattychicken · 05/02/2022 14:42

Do it!! You'll be fine. Lots of sofa cuddle time.

Easterbunnyiswindowshopping · 05/02/2022 14:54

Think of it this way. If you had ddog already and had your injuries would you send her back?

tabulahrasa · 05/02/2022 15:01

You don’t want to walk her to start with anyway, most places recommend up to a week before you even try.

Chelsea26 · 05/02/2022 15:17

We’re doing it!!! HmmGrinHmmGrin

Might even get her tonight!

Argh! Exciting scary stuff!!

salsmum · 05/02/2022 15:46

Omg! I've always had rescues and the day/night before they come is sooo exciting and seeing their sweet faces when they get that first hug is just the best thing ♥️ can I ask for a link to the rescue site please? Good luck ThanksWine

She is the same breed as my rescue pup and I have to say he is big and strong if he wants to pull. He is also quite full on and needs lots of exercise and entertainment but I am hoping that's his age (9 mo)
Thus far he is not hugely up for cuddling on the sofa at home (too fluffy). He prefers to lie at your feet or guard the house from the front door step or the patio.
My DD (14) walks him on her own if it's not near a road.
He is a handsome beast though (gets lots of admiration on walks) very clever and quick to learn and he loves tummy rubs and strokes. He will actually brush round your legs like a cat for that.
He's super friendly (a bit too much) with dogs and people and not aggressive or scared at all.

If any of these are breed things and not just individual dog things then she will be a good family dog in the end even if its a bit hard going to start with.

Dog tomorrow (eek!) but I’m injured
Chelsea26 · 05/02/2022 17:47

@CovoidOfAllHumanity

Is he a mioritic shepherd? They think she is but a mix. They have said she likes to guard a doorway and ‘herd’ on walks but they do say she’s calm and likes cuddles - she’s older though.

Totally up for an active dog that likes to play, it’s just I’m not active for the next few weeks. Hopefully by time she’s settled I’ll be better and we’ll be off!

MyBottleOfRibena · 05/02/2022 17:54

She is gorgeous! 😍

CovoidOfAllHumanity · 05/02/2022 18:03

Yes he's a mioritic shepherd mix
It's a flock guardian breed not a herding breed apparently. He definitely doesn't herd but he does like to survey his domain
Apparently they do bond strongly with their 'flock' He likes to know where we all are and he gets very sad if anyone leaves for school or work and cries and whines
He likes to be near us all but not cuddled up necessarily
He has bugger all interest in balls or retrieving things or sniffing things out. The only thing he likes to do with toys is play tuggy or pounce on them and 'kill' them.
He is really up for walking as far as you want to go and he actually likes training games and tricks a lot (or he likes getting sausages) and picks them up really easily.

picklemewalnuts · 05/02/2022 21:32

Be aware, she's probably no idea of what it's like to be a dog here.
One of ours wouldn't walk on a pavement. Another wouldn't walk on bare floor, we had to put mats down everywhere so she could get around.

UnUdderOne · 05/02/2022 21:47

Do you have her now?
