What is the best thing to put in a crate for bedding for an 8 week old puppy?

There seem to be soo many options.

I would use vet fleece as a bedding to start with. But an 8 week pup won’t be crate trained will it??

MrsWinters · 02/02/2022 21:09

Vetbed. You can buy a roll/large piece and cut to size. It’s near enough chew proof, machine washable and if it gets manky just replace with a new bit

Fastforwardtospring · 02/02/2022 21:12

A blanket that’s been with puppy’s mum.

B1ngB9ng · 02/02/2022 21:14

Vetbed doesn’t look that cosy. Do you put a dog bed in on top?

I hope the crate is big enough for you op.. 8 weeks old your dpuppy just needs you.

MrsWinters · 02/02/2022 21:16

Buy some, it’s lovely. About an inch deep fluff on a backing.

Wolfiefan · 02/02/2022 21:17

What size is pup?
Puppies chew. They can chew any bed with filling and cause injury to themselves.
Plus you won’t be shutting an 8 week old puppy in a crate all night.

capercaillie · 02/02/2022 21:20

Vet bed but don’t cover all of crate. Also need some left uncovered up cool down. Ours was in crate from 8 weeks - no problem. She still loves it in there abs naps there in day

PollyRoulllson · 02/02/2022 21:23

Wolfiefan the puppy needs something in the crate especially when crate training Confused

OP vet bed is sooo comfy, Get the green backed version not rubberbacked version for puppies

CityOfGunthers · 02/02/2022 22:07

I use these type of throws for the dogs. Warm and cosy, wash easily and dry almost instantly if they get dirty. My dogs just see the "proper" dog beds as a lovely enrichment activity to rip all of the stuffing out of Angry

Wolfiefan · 02/02/2022 22:26

Of course it does @PollyRoulllson but as it won’t be shut in a crate for hours it won’t necessarily need a snuggly bed.
We always use vet fleece until the shredding stage is over.

B1ngB9ng · 03/02/2022 05:27

It will be sleeping in it’s crate in order to make it feel more secure. As such will need a comfy place to sleep.

Really don’t need a crate lecture just advice on best products for a puppy to sleep in.So will Vetbed and a blanket be enough? When do they have a proper dog bed?

An other vote for vetbed.

SmolCat · 03/02/2022 07:08

I would do vet bed then a snuggle sack on top.

HavfrueDenizKisi · 03/02/2022 07:12

Definitely vetbed. It is costly, cheap and can be washed. I added a small blanket too.

HavfrueDenizKisi · 03/02/2022 07:12

That should say cosy not costly!

HavfrueDenizKisi · 03/02/2022 07:13

We also had a proper dog bed in the same room as the crate which we bought a couple of weeks after puppy was home.

mynameisnotmichaelcaine · 03/02/2022 07:16

My pup is nearly one and still just has vet bed both as her day bed and in her crate. I have bought several other beds, all of which have been shredded. She seems perfectly happy and comfy. She's quite small and slight though - she's a small cocker.

FazedNotPhased · 03/02/2022 09:10

I did vetbed, cheapy fluffy Aldi bed, blankets. It's like a little cosy nest and you actually have to prise the puppy out in the morning. He beetles in there for bed like a greased weasel. So in my opinion, make it warm and cosy and crate training is a lot easier!

DottyHarmer · 03/02/2022 09:13

A yoga mat cut to size to cover the hard base, and on top dh’s old dressing gown (White Company no less!). Also some towels round the sides to cushion him in. Puppy loves his nest!

tizwozliz · 03/02/2022 09:17

We had a dog cushion for the crate from day1, along with some fleece blankets. We had vetbed on standby in case of accidents or bed destruction tendencies but she never soiled or destroyed it. We got a cheapish bed for the kitchen when she was around 12 weeks I think.

CMOTDibbler · 03/02/2022 09:19

Vetbed and then cheap fleece blanket scuffled into a little nest. Easy to wash and dry quickly

Autumn101 · 03/02/2022 09:45

A fairly flat bed in ours (it’s technically a cat bed I think) with a blanket on top - I bought one of those fluffy supposedly calming beds and he found it hilarious and got totally manic 😂

Askawayyyy · 03/02/2022 11:18

Vet bed and cheap throws etc so it’s cosy

Blahblahblah40 · 03/02/2022 13:09

Blahpup has his bed inside his crate. He wouldn’t settle with just a fluffy mat and blanket so I gave in when sleep deprived. He isn’t crate trained at all, just sleeps in it as he would a bed but think he likes the safety of it at night. I just have a stair gate on the door.
He had been sleeping in a dog bed at the breeder so had already experienced the good life 😂
