There must be a bad bug going round. My two have been feeling decidedly wretched, not eating, throwing up, runny poo. the lot.

Getting worried now.

There is a mystery dog illness around at the moment with similar symptoms to what you are describing. If you Google it, then it comes up with lots of recent news stories.

I've read that, or something similar to that, I suppose I'm looking for someone whose dogs have had it and got better.

My 10 year old Lurcher had a terrible bad tummy 2 weeks ago.
She has never been ill like it before.
I am not sure if its the same as your dogs but mine had terrible diarrhoea to the point it was nearly just blood. She would not eat or drink and she looked dreadful.
Took her to the vet who thought it was a previous change in dog food.
She was so nauseous dribble was just pouring from her mouth at the vets and she was in a lot of pain around her abdomen making her too tense for the vet to examine her properly.
They tested for Parvo whilst I was there which was negative.
They gave her a painkiller and anti sickness injection and some vetpro ( think its a sort of binding agent for her blood and pooing)which I had to give her daily with some omeperazole and sucrafalte. Bought some Hydration drinks for her as well.
The vet seemed to think it was a gastro intestinal bug or infection but wasnt too sure. I had to just feed her chicken and rice for a week.
I would say she was ill for a week, she stayed downstairs at night which she never does as she was just too unwell to come upstairs.
I did think I was going to lose her at one point as the diarrhoea was so bad.
She is so much better now, I have still really only been feeding her chicken and rice with some veg as well as I am too scared to try the dog food again. She did have roast beef with veg last night and I have been slow cooking bones to make her broths as she lost so much weight.
I dont know if this helps at all but I have never had a dog who became so suddenly ill like that before and I was pretty hysterical at the vets.
I hope your dogs get better soon, so scary when they cant let you know what,s the matter. Will say the vet was fantastic though.

ChardonnaysPetDragon · 23/01/2022 12:19

It's the not drinking anything combined with diarrhoea that worries me the most. Food doesn't worry me quite so bad yet.

I've never seen them as lethargic as this. Will go to the vet tomorrow.

Chuechebache · 23/01/2022 12:24

Its good you are taking her to the vet tomorrow.I have read about the sick bug.It might be worth mentioning,1000nds of dogs get a bug every day in this country.Just so you dont go overdrive with worry, incase a lot of people here posting about their dog throwing up.OP,hope your dog recovers quickly.

Doje · 23/01/2022 12:34

There's a lot of it going around at the moment.

DDog had it over Christmas. No vomiting, but he had diarrhea for a couple of days then went completely off his food and was so lethargic. Like you I was worried about dehydration so took him to the vets. They gave him an anti-nausea injection and then a probiotic to sort out his guts. She suggested offering him food little and often (as opposed to when they're vomiting and I think the advise is to hold off food for 24hrs). She suggested egg, chicken, rice, pasta, potato, white fish. The only thing he ate was plain yoghurt and the after 12hrs or so started on mushed sweet potato and then white fish.

He started getting better about 12 hrs after the injection and was himself again in 24-36 hrs.

CovidCorvid · 23/01/2022 12:36

I’d be tempted to go today.

Luckymummytoone · 23/01/2022 12:38

My pup is poorly with it at the moment. Has been to the vets twice for antiemetics and antibiotic injection. We have probiotic paste for her too now. Is your vet open at the weekend? She wasn’t drinking either as couldn’t keep it down and was so sleepy :( seems brighter today x hope they feel better soon x

Luckymummytoone · 23/01/2022 12:40

I’d definitely go today if you can x

ChardonnaysPetDragon · 23/01/2022 12:41

I'm watching them closely. Went yesterday, might go to the emergency vet today as well, if they keep avoiding the water bowl.

Made some chicken stock, that usually gets them excited but nothing, won't drink even that.

Sent DH to the shops for some plain yogurt, that's another favourite. See what happens.

Mine were both similar. But they're both in season. So I put it down to that. But even the working cocker was lazy for a few days.

However, dad's chihuahua hasn't been well for a good few days. He didn't even get up and come to the door like he always does.

Took him to the vet and he thinks ita this bug that's been going around. We didn't feed him for 24 hrs. Then just boiled chicken in small amounts. It's been 5 days and he is perking up. Since yesterday he has been having a small amount of plain Greek yoghurt (on vets advice) and it really seems to have helped.

summersolstice43 · 23/01/2022 12:47

My parents dog has been poorly this last week. It started with really runny poo and he was crawling around with stomach pains. He was fine in himself, running around and acting himself. He was fed chicken and rice and things got better then he started being sick a few days later. Hes been to the vets and has been given some paste to stop the pain and told to have bland food. He is improving slowly. Hasnt been walked anywhere differently so no idea where he's picked it up.

mumsiedarlingrevolta · 23/01/2022 12:55

My dog had exactly this last week.

She is very greedy so the no appetite is huge red flag!
Did end up taking her to the vet and no temp, bloods fine. They gave her an anti nausea jab to perk her up. Did say if she was too dehydrated she'd have to be admitted on a drip.

Felt very very sorry for herself. Today is the first day she seems back to her best. So it was about a week in total.

I know of 2 other dogs in my dog walking groups whose dogs have been sick but she hasn't really had any contact with them.

She is enjoying her white fish and scrambled eggs for sure.

I've heard some suggestions that there's some gastroenteritis doing the rounds in dogs at the moment

Luckymummytoone · 23/01/2022 13:16

Are they passing urine? My pup wasn’t but the vet said she didn’t seem too dehydrated luckily! I have no idea how though the amount that came out of her! I read somewhere you can tell by their gums but not sure what the signs were now. Hopefully the yoghurt will help x

Luckymummytoone · 23/01/2022 13:16

What did the vet say yesterday? Xx

MrsWooster · 23/01/2022 13:18

Lots round here (north Leeds). Two to three days of vomit diarrhoea then ok. Keep trying to hydrate -even drip into their mouth?

FortunaMajor · 23/01/2022 13:19

Mine came down with it on Tuesday. Vomited twice, liquid diarrhoea, a bit lethargic. Didn't really eat Tues or Weds and carried on with loose poo until Thurs. Started eating better on Thurs, but only small amounts for 2 days. Had firm poo on Friday. She was ravenous yesterday and is climbing the walls today wanting a walk. I'm keeping her in until tomorrow despite her being back to normal.

Mine has a very delicate tum, so D&V for a day or two isn't unusual every so often, but this was worse than I would usually expect.

ChardonnaysPetDragon · 23/01/2022 13:19

Good question.

Yes, passing urine.

Had half a biscuit and an oatcake each. Haven't touched the water yet. I'll google gum and dehydration and will be looking out for it. Not a lot of vomiting, just early in the morning for one of them, and no diarrhoea today, so I suppose that's good.

mumsiedarlingrevolta · 23/01/2022 13:20

@Luckymummytoone I think you rub along the gums with your finger-it should slide easily-not be tacky.
*disclaimer-I am not a vet but the vet did it and that's what she said

ChardonnaysPetDragon · 23/01/2022 13:21

Vet not worried much yesterday because they don't vomit much, just a couple of times or so. Suggested we go in tomorrow for the injection if things not better.

I might go in today if no luck with the yogurt or the chicken stock.

OP posts:
CovidCorvid · 23/01/2022 13:28

Oh if you went yesterday and the vet was happy with them and they’re no worse then they can probably wait until tomorrow. Sorry, didn’t realise you’d seen the vet yesterday. Hope they improve soon. It’s scary that so many dogs seem poorly with it, seems worse in Yorkshire but heard of it happening in a few other areas now.

Mine turned up her nose at nearly everything and all of my usual go to, dodgy tum meals like chicken and rice. She wouldn't touch the tuna I tried, but did eat the tinned salmon. She had a Webbox Naturals sausage yesterday (available in most supermarkets) and is back on normal food today. I try to keep one of the sausages in on standby as a good go to meal if she's a bit off. Not to be confused with the godawful chub roll sausages the company also make.

One of mine has been vomiting for 24 hours too. He’s still bright and eating but obviously does not feel right poor lad.

Strangely the others don’t seem to have it Confused

fairylightsandwaxmelts · 23/01/2022 16:54

These bugs go round every winter - they're our version of the winter vomiting bug.

While they look incredibly nasty, the vast majority of dogs will recover just fine with plenty of rest, liquids, bland foods (like chicken or white fish with rice) and probiotics if necessary.

I'm a dog walker and have dogs taken out by this bug every winter - it's just this year, the media has picked up on it, hence all the scary sounding posts on social media. It's honestly no different (or worse) than any other year.
