Where I live there are a few people with Pit Bull terriers ie they openly admit they are pure Pit Bull and cost thousands of pounds. Are they no longer banned then?

@BullyLover Genuine e question, why out if all the dog breeds out there would you pick an XL bully? What is it about the breed that appeals to you above all others? The problem with dogs that are very muscular and much stronger than any human, is that IF something went wrong, the human stands no chance against the dog whereas if a "rat-cross" breed bit a human, the human could easily overpower it.

Well first of all, my gf is allergic and he doesn’t shed and he has short hair so he doesn’t set her off. Second of all, because I won’t trip over him, he doesn’t require 3+ hours of exercise (1-2 will be fine when he’s older, he’s only doing 1 hour now). They are a nanny breed and even if he decided to hurt someone or me (he never will) I am 110kg and 6ft so I can control him and he stands no chance against me.

Obviously if you were 60kg I wouldn’t recommend a dog that gets to your size unless you train them daily and have experience. I don’t have experience (my gf does, particularly with staffy’s, Rottweiler and bullnastiff cross), but I train him for 30 mins to an hour a day and he’s better than most dogs out there.

What I liked about the breed is that whenever I met them they would wag their tail and greet everyone and everything and I never ran into a “bad one”, so I like their temperament and their size as I won’t squash them if I lay on them by accident. He’s not as big as I want to get, but I thought I’d start small as I want mastiffs and larger breeds of dogs. If you want one either be physically able to control it or be experienced.

Above all else, always train them even if you have a rat cross breed and you can easily overpower them and that’s your excuse for allowing them to be aggressive/untrained, then that’s on you as a bad owner (not saying you do this in particular) I believe people shouldn’t have a dog at that point.

A poodle ticks all those boxes.
Wouldn’t make anyone look Macho though

megletthesecond · 30/07/2023 12:10

No dog is a "nanny breed" that bit of folklore has been shown to be rubbish with no evidence.

BullyLover · 30/07/2023 12:32

Trust me mate, I don’t need any dog making me look macho and I never even mentioned that as a reason, but go on make scenarios up in your head and only have a conversation with that voice in your head from now on. Can also squash a poodle by accident. XLs are meant to be a family dog and you will all have to deal with that hahaha

I have no idea why people who own these dogs are perceived so negatively.

BullyLover · 30/07/2023 12:43

I have no idea why people who never met these dogs or me, make assumptions about both. You have a lovely and blessed day, whoever you are. May god guide your misguided mind and deliver you away from hate.

BullyLover · 30/07/2023 12:44

It’s hard for me to agree when I’ve seen Staffys and XL’s stay and watch kids/babies keeping them safe for hours on their own.

Grimbelina · 30/07/2023 13:01

Bullylover sadly you sound just like a family member... until their dog attacked and severely injured them and was PTS.

Hellohah · 30/07/2023 13:13

I meet 2 XL Bullies on walks with my dog, and I have to say they are 2 of the best behaved, most affectionate dogs I've come across.

I believe they're brother and sister. Mine loves most dogs however isn't keen if approached by 2 or more bigger dogs at the same time, but the bullies are great. The sister always says hello to him first and almost gives the brother permission to play. It's quite funny. He's gentle with mine who I guess is a big dog (but he's all legs) and has shown zero signs of aggression.

The sister prefers human attention, and just wants a good stroke, she likes to sit on feet and look up at you adoringly is what I've discovered 😂.

Well aware from their owner, not many owners want his dogs near theirs, which is such a shame as they are really lovely dogs.

You know people who let dogs babysit instead of actual humans?

3WildOnes · 30/07/2023 13:29

I've known well trained dogs from loving families to snap at children when they have been startled or accidently hurt. You can never be 100% sure that your dog won't bite if your child accidently hurts it. If a Bichon bites your child as a fear response it is unlikely to do much damage, you can't say the same for bully breeds. I think people who have these dogs and children are negligent.

GSDmom · 30/07/2023 13:35

@BullyLover
You've got to admit they do have a bad rep at the moment, so you can't blame the average Joe being weary of, or even disliking, the breed. The same has happened to many breeds over the years. I believe you that your dog is well behaved, but any owner would be foolish not to understand that all dogs are animals and have a different psychological state than humans. Any of them have the potential to act "out of character" and can cause varying degrees of harm in the process. My dog is wonderful and appears to absolutely love my DD, but I would never 100% trust him because he is a dog. You can never 100% trust ANY dog.

Saying "he never will" makes you a dangerous and irresponsible dog owner. Any dog will given the right set of circumstances.

And may God keep you safe because blind belief in your ability to control your Dog won’t

BullyLover · 30/07/2023 13:52

@NewNovember he won’t because I won’t give him the chance to. He’s always leashed in public and is never unsupervised.

BirdsCustardPowder · 30/07/2023 13:56

A friend has one who does seem lovely. Well-behaved, loves a tickle behind the ears, and gives you his paw to shake to say hello. But he went to residential training because he was too strong as a puppy for her to walk with a buggy. He wasn't being naughty, only in the way that puppies lunge and try to get to exciting things. But he was too big and strong for her to manage even when he was very young.

Now she posts a lot on Instagram how he's bomb-proof, lovely with the children, #dontbullymybreed etc.

If I were her though, I wouldn't be tagging the breeder on Instagram. The generation above her puppy all have cropped ears, and the breeder has just started 'specialising' in merle puppies...

BullyLover · 30/07/2023 14:04

@Hoppinggreen
It’s not blind belief. I am 110kg, double his full grown size, he will never be faster than me as he isn’t now at 30 kg and I’m a trained fighter. Not to be “macho”, but there’s no way I won’t be able to intervene if something is happening as he’s always supervised and if he isn’t he is crated.

And to the other people not being hateful and jumping to conclusions, thank you very much and I understand he’s a dog so don’t worry. His recall is 80% there but even if it’s 110% there I won’t have him off leash and I am responsible with him because I know he’s a dog and can hurt people just like any other dog can.

To all on this thread, I won’t waste any more time on mumsnet talking about bullies because it’s pointless so I hope you get nothing but prosperity and good health. May god bless you!

Wow what appalling parenting. I mean 9 out of the 15 deaths caused by dogs in the last 18 months were by XL bullies, but you do you.

Just please call the police on anyone who thinks it's appropriate for their dog to babysit their baby or child - no matter what the breed. Fucking imbeciles.

SingingFaLaLa · 30/07/2023 14:17

😂

Anyone leaving their baby with the dog acting as unsupervised babysitter for hours needs SS involvement. Regardless of breed.

Your failure to recognise that shows that you're a sandwich short of a full picnic. Typical XL owner basically.

BullyLover · 30/07/2023 14:39

I can understand the confusion I’ve caused with my other statement. I thought this was obvious however from the responses I can see further explanation is needed. What I meant was that there’s clearly adults around however these animals have been raised around these children and are completely capable of being in a room with them whilst you do tasks such as cleaning, cooking etc. I do not mean they are literal baby sitters as who in their right minds would leave a dog in charge however I believe these breads can be trusted. That’s not to say there’s not bad examples of the breeds however does that mean the breed should be banned? I believe it’s extremely difficult to comment on such breed as those who are in support have often researched and looked for ethical breeders who have gone for temperament over looks - this should be the same for any breed.

you can also keep saying things like “typical XL bully owner”, but this typical owner has trained better obedience into a 6 month old pup than any of you can train into any chihuahua or pug you will ever own in your lives. This hate is much worse for your kids than my dog ever will be 😂😂

RunningFromInsanity · 30/07/2023 14:39

I don’t think saying you are faster than a dog is helping your credibility.

naxos · 30/07/2023 14:40

'why do XL bullies have a rep for being owned by thick, aggressive cunts?' - well, if the shoe fits.

IME women who have them do so because they have the same mentality of the women who write to death row inmates and fall in love with them, the men get them because they want to look hard (even if they're already - wow - six foot tall and a trained fighter!). Then when Gucci and Machete rip a kid to death they claim they had no idea, they were told they were a nanny breed, they were as good as gold until a toddler had the temerity to walk past them.

FatNoMoreSue · 30/07/2023 14:43

The hard of thinking like them because they enjoy the perceived cachet of having a “hard” breed. They often refer to them as “pibbles”.
