The kids just taught the dog to wink - what odd things do yours do?

I didn't believe them but they've just got him to do it and now he's doing it on demand as we are laughing so much.

I am sure he is just copying them winking but it is making us laugh so much. Is there anything odd yours do?

I am very jealous of your clever dogs - these are brilliant!

ChenPup (4.5 months old) know the basic sit/lie down/paw/touch (he touches my hand with his nose) but only if there's a treat every time he does them. He's really going to have to up his game after reading some of these.

Our border collie does loads of things that just strike us as normal at this stage.

He hangs around the kitchen hoping for scraps when I am doing dinner (yes even raw onion) when I shout dinner we go into the breakfast room and he lies on the floor in the kitchen eyeballing us, but not begging.

Knows the bed time routine.

Lets himself in and out during the day by pulling down on the door handle, a pain in the arse in the winter.

Recognises the theme tune to Big Bang and comes hurtling from anywhere in the house just in time for the end when it goes BANG.

Barks along in perfect time to Happy Birthday.

I am sure there is more.

Oh just remembered, winks and smiles though not at the same time. Grin

AgathaX · 05/01/2022 11:34

How did the dc teach to dog to wink? I'd love to teach ours this.

waterlego · 05/01/2022 11:45

Love these stories. What a lot of Good Boys and Girls!

Our dog is obsessed with his tennis ball. He repeatedly begins it back but sometimes drops it too far away before running off to await the next throw. He now responds to ‘I can’t reach it’ by picking up the ball and bringing it right to me. It seems quite clever when you see him do it, but if he was actually clever surely he would just bring it straight to me in the first place.

HappyThursdays · 05/01/2022 11:46

@CopperLily ha! I wouldn't worry as ddog despite learning how to wink, point blank refuses to do half the actually useful dog commands he is meant to be learning - you know like sodding recall and walking to heel Grin the little sod.

The dog kept staring at dd so dd started winking back at him as a joke and after a while he winked back at her Grin. He of course now thinks it's hysterical. I've got it on video twice but unfortunately with shrieking half naked children in the background each time so will try and create a sedate surrounding (not easy in this madhouse!). Back at work tomorrow so will run out of time then Sad

Kids have taught ddog to stand up on her back legs to the command 'meerkat'

pumpkinpie01 · 05/01/2022 11:56

@liveforsummer brilliant ! Ours can put her toys in her basket .

isthismylifenow · 05/01/2022 13:09

I forgot one.

I have a domestic helper that comes to my house 3 times a week (I am not in the UK btw), she comes on a Monday, Wednesday and Friday. About 8.30am. Both of my dogs will sit and wait at the gate for her from around 8.20am, but only on Mon, Wed, Fri. The other days of the week they do dog stuff at those times. She had not come over the holiday period, and my one ddog sat at the gate for hours on the first Monday of the holidays. No amount of calling her or distracting her worked. She just sat there, waiting.

We went on holiday the next day, so my ddogs went off to the kennels. I collected them from the kennels yesterday (Tuesday). This morning ddog waited at the gate again, as its Wednesday. How did she know!? Her routine has been really out of whack being at the kennels. They do amaze me at times.

Twinstudy · 05/01/2022 13:17

Poor old ddog isn't very bright 😄 but he has learned that when I say goodbye on my second morning call it's time to go for a walk and he gets up to wait by the back door. Doesn't shift when I say bye on the first call, he knows he has to wait for the second one!

He also knows when people are coming to visit and will stand by the door five minutes before they arrive and whine. No idea how he knows but we always know guests will arrive in five minutes when he goes to the door!

gogohm · 05/01/2022 13:18

@AThroneOfLies

Mine too, sings to the piano mostly

Ariela · 05/01/2022 13:47

Our collie has learned the command 'nudge' . Which means push with your snout, no teeth when playing with a balloon.

Petalpup · 05/01/2022 13:56

After many muddy walks mine now walks straight to the (downstairs) shower as soon as we get in and stands there dolefully waiting to be hosed down.
She also catches a frisbee with her paws!

TooExtraImmatureCheddar · 05/01/2022 14:07

Last dog used to bark in the right places if you sang “how much is that doggy in the window?”

Current dog knows ‘cuddles’ - if you tap your chest she stands on her hind legs and puts her paws around your neck.

liveforsummer · 05/01/2022 15:00

Ddog seems to know what day of the week it is. She goes to my parents while I'm at work and on a Tuesday they leave her at home to go shopping. Any other time they go and put shoes on she's dancing around with glee but on the Tuesday doesn't even nothing to lift her head off the cushion. Similarly on a Thursday we go swimming and leave her behind. Any other time we get ready to leave she runs to the top of the stairs expecting she's coming with us but on a Thursday she just stays in her bed

HappyThursdays · 05/01/2022 15:45

How these dogs know the day of the week is beyond me!

I used to live on a farm and my young, bath-hating dog could come and go as he pleased. Doors often open. I was wfh one day and caught a slight whiff of foxshit. Searched for the pup. Nowhere to be found.
Like a PP's he was waiting, shivering, in the shower.

PollyRoulllson · 05/01/2022 17:38

Love these Grin

I love teaching tricks that my DC groan when I show them a new one and then say "why dont you teach them something useful and normal"

I did enjoy teaching the vicars dog that was staying with us to bark when you said Amen.....it amused me

BestIsWest · 05/01/2022 17:43

One of mine is very clever. He knows that when I shut the laptop at the end of the working day it’s time for walkies.
He stops exactly across the road from the poo bin so we can cross to drop poo bags in - but only if he’s done a poo.

He also knows exactly what time it is and demands dinner at 6pm and his arthris tablet at 8pm.
He also knows that at 3pm on a Saturday it’s time to visit my mum so will nag until I’m ready to leave.

However he does not have a clue when it comes to getting treats out of a treat ball. Our other dog who is much less smart got it first time.

SirChenjins · 05/01/2022 18:57

How do you teach them to bark on cue? I’ve spent all day trying to get ChenPup to bark at the right place during my rendition of ‘how much is that doggy in the window’ - but nope. Absolutely nothing apart from a ‘what on Earth are you doing, you crazy lady’ look from him.

This dog knows all of his toys by name. I think that's incredible.

Simonjt · 05/01/2022 19:02

He has been taught his toys names, so we can ask him to find lobster for example.

I also accidentally taught him that if I slightly bend my knees I want him to come back to me.

I would say every time he barks at will quickly say the word window , this will take a while . When he/she has got the word window and barking are connected maybe you can start to to add words of the song after window ,and just let the song grow .🐶

@plinkplinkfizzer

My girl was trained to jump through a hula hoop on command and spin on the spot . She is elderly now so hula hoop is in storage .
Forgot to say she will also take a bow after her party pieces . I think it's great so many of you teach tricks , it's really good for bonding and good for a break in between the serious training , also good fun .😍
