Those who have had spayed females dogs - are the male dogs less interested once spayed?

We always seems to get (normal bouncy black labs) sniffing around her a lot. Is this something that is likely to be less once spayed? She is about 6 weeks since her season now so definitely not in season.

It did take a while for male dogs to stop being interested in ours. She'd had one season before being spayed but I guess the smell stays for a long time. Unfortunately the humping attempts continued for quite some time from some dogs. She was able to tell the dogs off, but it wasn't fun for her (or us) so when we saw the dogs who couldn't help themselves (understandable) we would leave as it's not fair for either of the dogs.

Alfixn · 24/12/2021 15:15

Yes that should go away when spayed.

Turquoisesol · 24/12/2021 15:22

Oh that’s interesting. I am first time dog owner and not really realised this. I thought it was only when she was in season that it would happen

It could just be that she smelled particularly good! We've never had a female dog before so that's just our experience so might not be the norm.

Most dogs she was absolutely fine with and wasn't bothered after being spayed, it was just a couple that couldn't help themselves and tried to mount her whenever they saw her.

Alfixn · 24/12/2021 15:30

It takes the hormones a long time to settle down after a season.

bellalou1234 · 24/12/2021 15:31

My dog is like kim kardashian

Duchess379 · 24/12/2021 15:33

I've got 2 females that are 10.5yrs old now. One of them never attracted male suitors, the other, well, all boys wanted to go to her yard! Even now! 😆🐾

Turquoisesol · 24/12/2021 15:34

Duchess are they spayed?

Wolfiefan · 24/12/2021 15:40

Spaying will stop seasons and dogs pestering for that reason
It won’t stop puppies, rude adolescent dogs and bouncy loony dogs. No.

Turquoisesol · 24/12/2021 15:42

Thanks wolfiefan , I know we will always get the odd rude dog who come to pester us. But I just wondered if being spayed would help at all. Is an unspayed female who is not in season likely to attract more male dogs than a spayed female?
I suppose that is the question

Dogs do sniff each other’s bums though, make or female.

Wolfiefan · 24/12/2021 15:45

Dogs do sniff though. Dogs sniff each other in greeting. That’s normal.

Turquoisesol · 24/12/2021 15:45

Yes I know. But normally quick sniff and then move on? We had one this morning that kept following her even when she was head down and trying to skulk away from them.

OP posts:
Wolfiefan · 24/12/2021 15:48

Some quick sniff. A few follow us away.
I always wash bedding and dog bits after a season!

Duchess379 · 24/12/2021 15:50

@Turquoisesol

Duchess are they spayed?
Yes, sorry, had them spayed at 1yr old. Kimi has still 'got it' tho 😆😉🐾
Turquoisesol · 24/12/2021 15:51

Oh she was in river yesterday so that prob helped get smell off. Perhaps I should wash all bedding again

Stellaris22 · 24/12/2021 15:54

I don't class the dogs who were overly interested as rude or bad dogs, they just couldn't help themselves. I just chose to walk away if I saw them, but she's absolutely fine now and doesn't get unwanted attention.

Turquoisesol · 24/12/2021 15:59

Yes they don’t seem like bad dogs. But could do with a few less following her when she is obviously trying to shake them off a bit

Stellaris22 · 24/12/2021 16:01

I feel your pain. Mine would snap and snarl which was horrible to see, she was able to look after herself and tell them off but it wasn't nice so I'd avoid the situation.

Turquoisesol · 24/12/2021 16:02

Yeah she never snapped or anything but I feel she could as she looks a bit annoyed sometimes

My lab bitch is like Duchess’ Kimi.
Spayed 4 years ago, males just love her. She had a particularly persistent terrier practically attached to her leg on a recent walk.

Male labs in particular, tend to have 2 hobbies if left to their own devices - sex and food. Training and activity is really important for them.

Turquoisesol · 24/12/2021 16:05

Lol quickchangeartiste typical boys !

Stellaris22 · 24/12/2021 16:06

I'm making my dog sound horrible! She's a basset hound so unbelievably laid back, that behaviour was extreme for her which is why I'd avoid the situation.

But after a couple of months post spay the unwanted attention stopped, it's great that she gets to play normally now and we definitely made the right decision for her as she'd hate not being able to play.

Turquoisesol · 24/12/2021 16:08

Not at all stellaris22 your dog sounds lovely. Yeah I am in two minds about spaying and just wondering if this is a benefit worth spaying for

OP posts:
Stellaris22 · 24/12/2021 16:10

It's a personal choice. For us I'd just feel guilty if she was unable to play with other dogs for a lot of her life. She loves her doggy pals and was miserable during her season when she was on lead/kept away. She's much happier playing.
