Those who have had spayed females dogs - are the male dogs less interested once spayed?

We always seems to get (normal bouncy black labs) sniffing around her a lot. Is this something that is likely to be less once spayed? She is about 6 weeks since her season now so definitely not in season.

The biggest pro for me with spaying is no seasons so no pregnancy but also no risk of pyometra. That’s a huge thing for me.

If you keep her unspayed make sure you are aware of the signs and symptoms of pyometra. It usually affects middle aged or older bitches, but can occasionally crop up in younger ones.

Pet insurance won't usually cover it (as its preventable by spaying) so it's worth having a think about how you'd cover the cost of emergency treatment too.

Thanks I didn’t know that about the insurance that’s good to know

Ours had a phantom pregnancy as well which was horrible. We always planned on spaying anyway because of the health risks.

My male was neutered at seven weeks (by the breeder). He still tries to mount my female when she's in season. She doesn't like the attention from other dogs and I can't say it's ever been much of an issue (she's 10 now).

@Quickchangeartiste

My lab bitch is like Duchess’ Kimi. Spayed 4 years ago, males just love her. She had a particularly persistent terrier practically attached to her leg on a recent walk.

Male labs in particular, tend to have 2 hobbies if left to their own devices - sex and food. Training and activity is really important for them.

It's a pain, isn't it? She's only small - 8kg & sits down in protest but a bigger male dog can stick his snout under her & nuzzle her, which she's not so keen on. Thankfully that hasn't happened for a while.. 🐾

Our spayed bitch is 4 years old. She has only ever been pestered twice over the years. Both were Labrador males.

TerrierOrTerror · 24/12/2021 19:23

We're currently going through a split season, so have essentially had two seasons virtually back to back. It seems it is only black labs who are interested in her!

We are doing street on-lead walks but live in a very doggy area so can't always avoid coming across dogs.

Stellaris22 · 24/12/2021 19:44

It was a springer that was obsessed with our female.

Thatldo · 24/12/2021 21:56

I always recommend spaying for several reasons
-your girl will always have freedom after been spayed
-unpleasant hassle from male (intact)dogs will stop(dont we just all hate those buggers)
-the danger of getting infections in older age is much reduced

If you dont want puppies,it is a must. All responsible rescue centres spay/castrate their animals before they go to new homes.Any responsible dog owner slays/castrates their pet.

Turquoisesol · 24/12/2021 22:46

Yes we probably will spay. I was just surprised how easy the season was to handle and we have a local national trust where all dogs are on lead so I didn’t need to worry about dogs approaching her.

Pyometra kills. Quickly. That would be my biggest worry.

Qwertykeys · 27/12/2021 21:49

My male , who is done , only bothers with our girl when she’s ready to be mated , no interstate in her until then . He shows no interest in our spayed bitch never has she was done before we had him .
