Dd 16 has been v poorly the past year and in hospital a fair bit. She has researched a lot as have we and think the time is right. Where do we start looking? Want to find one from a reputable breeder and not to be ripped off. It will be our first dog and thinking of a Cockapoo.

I have a rescue dog and I don't blame you for not wanting one. We love our dog but she has her quirks and I do envy dog walking friends with lovely cuddly cockapoos who are great with people and really cuddly and sociable. So no judgement on that.

I do think that having a puppy can be tough though. My sister is hard as nails and an experienced dog owner and she said that getting a puppy was absolutely awful, far far worse than she could have imagined.

Good luck!

Warmduscher · 22/12/2021 22:23

@Untang13d

Have done. Want to research further.
What further advice are you looking for that your countless friends with puppies weren’t able to give you?

Did not one of them mention puppy farms to you?

EmmaGrundyForPM · 22/12/2021 22:24

@Wolfiefan we visited the litter every week, it was definitely the breeders home! As I said, I spoke to her vet at some length which was the biggest reassurance.

MyRabbit79 · 22/12/2021 22:24

Oh and if you do get one, join the puppy survival thread on here. And have a read of it now for an insight into what dicks puppies can be, plus the light at the end of the tunnel when they grow up and are the best thing ever.

Untang13d · 22/12/2021 22:25

Yep but none have any breeder recommendations and want more info than just checking mummy’s there.

Don’t need grilling thanks just advice. Thank you to those that have given some.

There is lots of info from reputable sites about how to approach buying a puppy @Untang13d so I would start there.

I would wholly recommend getting a puppy from a reputable breeder who will give you advice and backup once you have pup. You don't say what your DC had or if it's resolved, but havin that backup will be invaluable if you find the hospital visits and your commitment to DCs health needs means you don't have time for a puppy.

I have an almost 1 yr old spaniel and it is hard work with no time off or let up and I'm exhausted. I love my dog, but having had to deal with family health issues this year myself, I've been in tears a number of times over giving my dog what they need when I've been emotionally spent.

MaryAndGerryLivingInDerry · 22/12/2021 22:26

She has researched a lot as have we

I’ve only managed to get as far as your first few posts but it’s very clear this^ isn’t true.

Wolfiefan · 22/12/2021 22:28

Hopping has it right.
Unfortunately OP doesn’t seem to care and just wants to know where they can get their cute poo mix from. Sad

Untang13d · 22/12/2021 22:28

We’ll it is so there you go. Aware more needs to be done so doing it.

Wolfiefan · 22/12/2021 22:30

What research?? You don’t even know what a puppy farm is. You’ve chosen a cross that is notorious for coming from crappy breeders. Confused

Wrongkindofovercoat · 22/12/2021 22:30

I think the best way is to talk to people locally who have the breed you are looking for and find out where they got theirs, people with good experiences will be happy to share the details and those with less than positive experiences will share theirs too.

I went down the rescue route for my own reasons, I got a dog who is great with people of all ages and other animals, is housetrained, walks like a dream on a lead and has great recall. Not all rescues dogs have issues, or at least no more than the average puppy Smile

Untang13d · 22/12/2021 22:30

Op does care but is pretty sure she’ll cope.

OP posts:
Untang13d · 22/12/2021 22:31

So Wolfe I will collate the info and make sure we steer away from crappy breeders.

Don’t you think you’ll be grilled when you present yourself as a prospective dog owner - someone who will be expected to meet the every need of another sentient being fit the entirety of its life, no matter whether you don’t feel like it / can’t afford it / don’t have the time?
Wolfiefan · 22/12/2021 22:32

@Untang13d that’s the problem.
It’s not about you. It’s about the bitches kept in kennels and bred litter after litter.
It’s the puppies that die of parvo.
It’s the dogs you don’t want that end up in rescue.
It’s about breeders knowing what they are doing and caring about the dogs.
It’s about hip scores and eye testing etc being done.
It’s about matching the right breed to the right home.
It’s about ongoing support from the breeder.

smurfsss · 22/12/2021 22:32

We found a breeder through the Kennel Club. All breeders are reputable on there I believe.

You say you have a lot on OP, like what? If you're in and out of hospital, when will you find time to socialise and train the puppy? And walk the dog daily? Do you work?

I'm just asking these questions because like PP have said on here, puppies are hard work.

EmmaGrundyForPM · 22/12/2021 22:33

@Untang13d

Don’t want a cockerpoo because it’s trendy but because we’ve started researching breeds and it’s the breed a few people we know have and feel it would suit our needs.
this was our reasoning as well. We also considered a miniature Schnauzer and a miniature poodle.
2bazookas · 22/12/2021 22:33

@Untang13d

God sounds like a real minefield. What is a puppy farm exactly?
Eh? You said you and DD had researched a lot.

But never saw mention of "avoid puppy farms"? Never heard them mentioned in the news?

Back to the research.

Wolfiefan · 22/12/2021 22:33

@smurfsss no they aren’t all reputable. Just all breed pedigree dogs.

Untang13d · 22/12/2021 22:33

Warmduscher
Pretty sure we won’t be found wanting but if we are not a lot I can do about it.

Untang13d · 22/12/2021 22:35

EmmaGrundyForPM We were interested in Miniature Schnauzers but discovered they bark a lot.

No returning to research, it’s still ongoing.

Rescues are the best.

MaryAndGerryLivingInDerry · 22/12/2021 22:39

Btw there are puppies in rescue. I rescued my dog in March- she was only 6ish months old (approx age as was found as a stray). The same rescue had a litter of 7 collie pups that had been handed in at 8 weeks old. They’ve also had a JRT pup, a mix breed pup, 2 terrier pups, and some others I can’t recall the details of all since March. Another local rescue today has a litter of 5 collie pups ready to be rehomed in Jan.

The benefit of a rescue is that they assess the dogs, all of them, before rehoming so they know temperament, any issues, if they are child/cat friendly etc. When you get a pup from a breeder you literally have no idea, other than what the breeder tells you, which will all be wonderful because they want your money.
