My daughter has been offered a dog from them. She hasn’t been to meet her yet. The info says the dog has a passport, does this mean it has come to the UK from another country?

OP posts:
LBF2020 · 19/12/2021 21:14

A friend has had 2 young puppies from there and has been happy with both
I can't comment on the dog passport with any certainty but I would guess it means the pup has come from overseas. They used to (and still may) take in lots of old breeding bitches.

Upyouranty · 19/12/2021 21:16

I have a beautiful boy who I rescued from there 10 months ago.

He’s Gorgeous - they do great work

kitkatsky · 19/12/2021 21:26

They're VERY selective about who they rehome to. That would put me off trying tbh but if your daughter has already been offered a dog...

user313213521 · 19/12/2021 23:08

I haven't had direct dealings with them, but they're a reputable rescue relatively local to me.

They take a lot of ex breeding dogs from Welsh puppy farms, and some unsold pups, and other dogs too.

ClementineWardobe · 19/12/2021 23:15

Can vouch for them. They are very strict on finding the right home for the dig, bit the right dog for the home. Many very damaged ex puppy farm dogs go to them. I had one, she was wonderful.

As it should be.

Adarajames · 19/12/2021 23:27

There have been complaints / mumblings / issues with them over the years. I’ve not been happy with communications I’ve had with them, and have known dogs rehomed too young, or have a write up that is nothing like the reality. I wouldn’t be happy to adopt from them

icedcoffees · 20/12/2021 06:26

They're a genuine rescue but not one I would use personally.

They take on a lot of ex-breeding bitches and studs when the breeders no longer have use for them, as well as puppies they can't sell and I don't like the idea that they're kind of encouraging puppy farming by doing this.

However any negative posts about rescues (in general) on here tend to get deleted and you get threatened with legal action so I'll leave it there Grin

Upyouranty · 20/12/2021 07:28

They SAVE ex breeding dogs and match them a home and family, sometimes for the first time in their lives!!

What do you think would happen if groups like Manytears didn’t exist? Breeders would stop? Nope. The dogs would be destroyed or abandoned when not useful.

Twospaniels · 20/12/2021 07:30

Thank you all for your very useful replies. Daughter has been accepted and offered a dog. I suspect it has either come from abroad or from a puppy farm.
She’s very sensible and experienced with dogs, she has a rescue dog already so hopefully all will go well for her with this one.

They do take in dogs from abroad, definitely from Ireland, maybe from further afield too. If I was your daughter I would ask where this dog came from. It is the only way to know for sure.

The argument is that they enable puppy farmers to just easily and legally offload their dogs without the guilt of having them PTS or otherwise got rid of.

They also only became a charity a year ago which raises quite a few red flags for me - why weren't they able to claim charitable status in the 10+ years of operating beforehand? Is it because they were classified as a business - and if so, why?

RobinsReliant · 20/12/2021 07:51

@Upyouranty Oh he’s beautiful! ❤️

RobinsReliant · 20/12/2021 07:59

Many Tears supporter here too. Have had rescue dogs from them. They are very thorough when selecting homes for their dogs (understandably) but our dogs have been wonderful!

They weren’t a charity initially and did explain why on their website (I can’t remember the reasons but it did make sense). They now have charity status.

They do great work and yes, if they didn’t take on the breeding dogs they would be destroyed. The work they do is incredible and yes, of course I wish puppy farms didn’t exist, but they do and Many Tears deals with the consequences of that.

OP, I hope your daughter has a wonderful time with her rescue dog. Ours have been simply wonderful.

Ylvamoon · 20/12/2021 08:13

@icedcoffees - I agree with you. Some rescue organisations do enable "bad practice" among the dog breeding communities, charitable status or not it's big business. But it's an unpopular opinion...

I'm glad it's not just me, though I recall being mildly flamed before for suggesting they're anything but perfect Wink

Though interestingly if you look through old threads or look them up on other sites, their are quite a few negative experiences and complaints about them floating around.

Upyouranty · 20/12/2021 08:54

@icedcoffees

You shouldn’t get flamed for voicing your opinions. Others may have had some negative experiences though that isn’t mine. There are lots of reasons why.

Good luck with your new family member op ♥️
I hope everything works out.

Possibly because there was a boarding kennels on the same site for years, which was run as a separate business, but meant they couldn’t achieve charitable status for the rescue.

But according to a quick google search, the boarding kennels are still in operation from the same site, so that can't be the reason they were denied charity status.

"Sylvia and Bill Van Atta have 18 rescued dogs of their own and also run Many Tears Animal Rescue from the property in conjunction with the boarding kennels."

Their price list was updated in June of this year so it appears to be a pretty up-to-date website.

I think in general they do good work but can be somewhat inflexible.
I have done homechecking for another charity so I understand the need to be careful. We were cleared as a perfect home for a pup (their words) But they insisted we make a 6 hour round trip to collect within 24 hours. We had a weekend away booked with family which we did offer to cut short but I was told “well you can’t be that bothered then”

MandyMotherOfBrian · 20/12/2021 18:03

Maybe they were, necessarily, using the boarding kennnels as revenue for the rescue originally but now (that they’re relatively large and well known and successful at fundraising) can prove they’re not and are
completely separate? I don’t know, I’m just guessing based on experience of volunteering for an animal rescue that has been going a long time before charitable status was viable for them.

Upyouranty · 20/12/2021 21:11

Thank you @RobinsReliant we luffs him ♥️♥️

Tiramesu · 20/12/2021 21:55

Google them. They have definitely been controversial, thought to enable breeders and even pay for dogs off them. However, they seem to have high standards for dog rehoming.

Yes, that's what I thought too.

While they may have high standards for re-homing they are not a rescue I would ever consider supporting.
