Buying a trained dog?

I was wondering if anyone had experience of buying a family dog from companies who specialise in training gun dogs. I’ve seen a couple of companies who do this advertised, but don’t know anyone personally who has been down this route. I’ve didn’t grow up with dogs so wondered if this would be more likely to be successful for someone who is new to dog owning? I appreciate the training would need to be continued by me for the rest of the dog’s life. I’m just nervous about starting from scratch - I’d hate to mess it up as not fair on the dog.

Would you have a slightly older dog that was a failed gun dog or had to retire early?
I’ve got two retired black labs one was 9 when I got him and the other 7. Both had worked as gun dogs. The 9 year old decided to stop working for some reason and the 7 year old had to retire due to a health issue but that’s resolved now he has a quieter life.
Really well trained, didn’t take long to bond. In fact the eldest now barks at his ex owner! Great with children and cats despite not being with either before. I don’t think I’d ever have a puppy again
You need a contact in your local shooting community or to ask at the vets if they could put your name forward to anyone who’s looking to retire a dog. I saw one advertised this week at the vets for not a lot of money.

It's not just breed temperament. It's individual dog's nature. I have had 3 pups, all the same breed. All the same in many ways but very different in others and each has required an individual approach, which you learn over time.

Re toilet training, it took months with my first pup and now is in the weeks with few accidents. But now we tagteam 24-hour surveillance and sleep downstairs in one room with the pup. So we see when he needed to go out and as he got older and could hold, then he learned to ask. Chewing is more of an issue really...

Love my dogs but pups are a lot of work. All good tho.

I think you mean buying a failed gun dog

So it's gone through training but no use as maybe noisy or scared of gun shot

Yes I know someone who has twice bought "failed" gundogs

Cost was around £3000

First one turned out ok and currently one not so good , well trained but lacks social side of things so lunges at strange dogs and is difficult to walk and extremely clinging in the house

They often have only lived in kennels.
