Young dog is limping :(

OopsadayZ · 10/12/2021 20:27

Hello,

Dog is just under a year old. Started limping today. Saw vet earlier. Vet can't see anything. But has given pain relief and anti-inflammatory. We have more to give for the next week.

Dog is on bed rest. If still limping on Monday we have to have x-rays.

Does anyone have any ideas or good luck stories? I'm in bits :(

No idea what happened. Dog didn't cry. Came back from walk. All fine, then started limping and can't bear weight.

If we go ahead with x-rays, what will happen? Will they administer an anaesthetic? Will the fur be shaved.... just trying to manage my own expectations.

I've never used the insurance before. Will x-rays be expensive? How do I go about claiming (just like house/car insurance I assume).

Thank you 😔

Which leg?

Might shave for canula but not the whole leg for x rays. More likely sedation not full GA.

Depends on insurance, some you need to get a claim form before treatment, some pay straight to vets others you pay and then get the money refunded to you.

What breed? Our saluki cross used to 'go over' on her gangly legs quite often as a dpuppy.

Working Cocker. Sorry to hear about your dog. Did the leg get better quickly? I hate the limping 😞

Did the vet check for luxating patella?
It's not a breed that's known for it, but it's not impossible

lingus · 10/12/2021 22:08

A young working cocker lame on back leg and the vet could not find anything noticeable eg luxating patella or cruciate or a break is a good start.

Hopefully just a soft tissue injury which will respond to rest and painkillers.

womaninatightspot · 10/12/2021 22:15

My lab did this. seemed to self resolve in a few days so just a soft tissue injury.

Thank you! It's my first dog (other than family dogs) and I can believe how much I love the the thing!!!

You've made me feel much better. I checked everywhere today and there wasn't any crying. But just this constant limping and hopping. Sad to see. My little fur baby.

I wanted a dog for so long and we were finally in a position to get one. I couldn't be more in love. So beaks my heart to see the limping!

Oh thank you! Vet said to go back early next week if not resolved.

I just love the little thing so much.

Dogs can quite happily get around on 3 legs, you're probably more upset about it then she is. She's only young and more than likely pulled or sprained something.

RIPWalter · 10/12/2021 22:23

My cocker X Bedlington used to get a mysterious leg injury.

After a while we realised it always occurred on a Monday. I work a 12 hour shift on a Sunday and despite DH and DD being at home with him, he spends almost the entire day moping around on his bed on the windowsill. Once we noticed the pattern we padded the windowsill out a bit more and he's been mostly fine since, occasionally a little stiff on a Monday but nothing more.

Sorry to hear about your dog, I have just had a horror of three weeks of vet and lameness so I hope its not the same for you. But I will tell you just in case this helps. My GSD puppy was lame on front right, vet did anti inflam etc. Three days later it was the same. Did x-ray and specialist vet diagnosed Septic Arthritis- emergency joint wash x 4 days, GA, etc....€1500 vet costs.
Septic Arthritis is super rare but very hard to spot. Watch put for the joint being hot and swollen, no recovery of lameness. It is highly highly unlikely you will have the same. If you are stuck with a diagnosis get a second opinion on the x ray.

Thank you! Really useful to hear this. I hope your dog is on the mend? Can they recover? Poor thing

I think you're absolutely right! There's been no crying at all! But it's horrible to see. Hopefully will be better una few days.

You really should have insurance, you could try one of the comparison sites for an idea on costs. You might find some policies will not cover for the first period up to 12 weeks. You also need to check that this will not be covered under existing condition because it’s already under investigation.

Presume you’ve not over walked the dog for hours at a time and followed the guidelines for puppies?

@FAQs the OP has insurance, its in her post. Her puppy is a year now so past the stage of joint issues so exercise is OK.
Janeandjohnny · 10/12/2021 23:07

@OopsadayZ
He is getting better thank you. It was only the second time the vet had seen this so I thought I would say in case yours was unresolved but its a back leg in your case and not a breed thst might get SA. Good luck. Rest it- are you using a crate?

MarleneDietrichsSmile · 10/12/2021 23:11

My dog had this last week

He probably pulled/sprained a muscle in a leg

After 5 days of rest and anti-inflammatory meds he was great again

Most things get better by themselves, thankfully

LoveFall · 10/12/2021 23:16

I assume the vet looked closely at his foot, nails, and pad.

Our little guy started limping and fussing his rear paw and it turned out the groomer had nicked his nail bed.

Antibiotics and pain relief for a week solved it. But I was convinced he had cancer as a lump came up that looked suspicious to me.

Thankfully not cancer as the lump is now gone. I assume it was an inflammatory response.

Mmmmdanone · 11/12/2021 07:31

Our 3 year old cockapoo was diagnosed with poly arthritis after having a mysterious limp. Other symptoms too though, like yelping in pain and not being able to pick things off the ground. She's currently on steroids which have basically cured her. Hopefully we can reduce steroids over time and she'll not relapse. Hope you find out what it is and get treatment. It's so distressing when they're not well!

ZiggysPFrow · 11/12/2021 07:56

Order a trial pack of Nutraquin from the Nutravet website. I think it's 4.99 for 30 tablets. It's amazing stuff, will help to heal and reduce inflammation. There's loads of reviews on their website you could look at to see how good it is

aaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaa · 11/12/2021 08:05

Exactly the same with my young pup. The vet was concerned it was joints/muscles etc. However, he had torn open his paw pad and thus was finding it uncomfortable to walk. I know you've seen the vet but give your pup another look over with your phone light to see if you can spot anything.
